Stop Overcomplicating Leadership

I recently read a review of the Rising Leader Podcast and it made me chuckle. The review explained that, although the podcast’s interview episodes are great, the solo episodes tend to be repetitive. And that’s understandable—I do repeat some of the same themes like a broken record, but for good reason. I always talk about leadership, and one reason for this is that most people tend to overcomplicate it. While I believe leadership isn’t easy—it’s really, really hard, to be honest—it’s actually fairly simple. In this episode, I discuss why leadership—although it’s hard—is simple. I discuss my recent interview with healthcare industry executive, Geffrey Roche, and explain how books and content on online platforms such as LinkedIn overcomplicate leadership. I also outline the components of great leadership and underscore why doing internal work—through staying grounded and reducing stress—is a critical part of being a leader. “Don't overcomplicate leadership. Have the conversations you need to have. Be as honest as you can in those conversations. If you make a mistake, admit it—fix it, right? Make amends.” - Mark J. How Well Do You Fail?

You do your best pitching—but you lose a sale. You attempt to communicate your ideas well—but you get shot down in the boardroom. How do you react when you fail? Do you sulk, lick your wounds, or get resentful? Try to find excuses? Or do you acknowledge the feeling of disappointment and try to come back better? Handling disappointment and loss can be as challenging as the tasks that caused them, but our resiliency and capacity to bounce back from failures can be built. In this episode, I discuss failing and failing gracefully. I share the story of Christopher Troy and explore how, when we’re met with failure, cheering for our team’s success can benefit us. I describe how I usually react to my own failures. I also share Beth Perlman’s wisdom on not taking failures personally and the value of treating life as an experiment. “Everything is in the lab. Nothing is a failure. Everything is just an experiment. We're trying different things.” - Mark J. The Most Effective Tool You Forget to Use

I didn’t think of The Rising Leader—it came to me: it picked me, and I answered the call. When I started pivoting to The Rising Leader, I was having so much fun. And though I was putting my heart and soul into writing the book, rebranding the podcast, and creating a keynote, it felt like everything was flowing—until it didn’t. It started to feel like I was pushing a rock up a hill. What came out of an inspiration became a hustle-and-grind. That’s when I realized that I'd fallen out of receivership. In this episode, I discuss receivership, how you can access it to reach your full potential, and letting your intuition—instead of the lies of hustle-and-grind—guide you. I also share the story of how Dr. Hew Len used Ho’oponopono to help transform and heal patients at a mental hospital, discuss Dr. Jeff Spencer’s Full Potential Play concept, and suggest activities you can do to help you relax and return to a state of receivership. “You can’t be at full potential until you add intuition or receivership, this exponential component, to your arsenal.” - Mark J. Lazy Leadership

You’ve probably seen a video making rounds on the internet recently: a gentleman speaking to an economic forum sharing his rather controversial take on unemployment. The gentleman claims that today’s workers are arrogant and feel like they can get away with anything and their companies owe them; that we need to “put employees in their places” by doubling unemployment and having hard economic times. Autocratic leadership—thinking that you have to beat people into submission to squeeze productivity out of them—is not just antiquated, but lazy as well. Unfortunately, as wild and outdated as it sounds, it’s prevalent thinking.  In this episode, I discuss how leading with an iron fist is lazy leadership and reveal the common denominator between accomplished, effective leaders like Beth Perlman, Deloitte CIO Larry Quinlan, and NetApp President Tom Mendoza. I discuss the power of empathy and care as core leadership traits. I also highlight tailoring your leadership approach according to personality type and underscore building trust through genuine care for others. “Amazing leaders who have accomplished so much have a common denominator: they run towards fire.” - Mark J. Silverman This week on The Rising Leader Podcast: ●     A controversial, outdated perspective on employment●     The willingness to tackle challenging tasks and help out your team●     Radical Candor and the need for empathy and effective feedback●     A client’s experience with feedback and empathy●     The only way to gain the trust of your people●     Tailoring your leadership approach according to different personality types Resources Mentioned: ●     Book: Lead From The Heart: Transformational Leadership For The 21st Century by Mark C. Matt teaches popular classes in strategic communication and effective virtual presenting. He is the author of Freaking Out and hosts the award-winning podcast Think Fast, Talk Smart. Matt joins me today to discuss managing public speaking anxiety and how to effectively navigate spontaneous public talks. He explains why anxiety from public speaking can’t be truly overcome and shares the two-pronged approach to managing the symptoms and sources of public speaking anxiety. He illustrates how we can reframe spontaneous public speaking situations not as threats, but as opportunities for exploration and collaboration. He outlines the “Pace, Space, & Grace” approach to high-impact, high-intensity conversations. He shares a story of serendipity and why he makes it a point to say “yes” to opportunities whenever possible. Matt also outlines the three “Rs” people must consider before asserting their viewpoint and underscores how persuasion involves more than convincing another person to do what you want them to do. “Most communication we do as leaders is spontaneous. Slowing Down to Speed Up

“Am I working too hard?” is a question I get a lot from people—and one I received from the host of a podcast I recently got invited to. My answer to that question is another set of questions: when you’re “working hard,” where does it come from and how does it feel on your body? Depending on how you answer, you’re either working on something you love—and are probably there by choice—or working for the wrong reasons. In this episode, I explore working too much and what you can do when you’re working hard for the wrong reasons. I also describe how I once worked hard, crashed, and burned because I was running away from fear. I also share the power of slowing down and letting your intuition guide you to your next steps toward a more meaningful path. “Slow down, take care of yourself, allow your intuition to show up, and check where you’re coming from. You’ll get further; you’ll have sustainable energy and motivation; and life will be a little bit more fun.” - Mark J.
