[Sweet and Snack Show Series] Using Simple Ingredients with Tom & Eric Healy from TheNoBakeCookieCo.com & AvocadoChips.com
Tom and Eric Healy are the father and son team behind The No Bake Cookie Co and AvoLov Avocado Chips. AvoLov's chips are made from real hass avocados, dried to a crisp and seasoned to perfection. The No-Bake Cookie Company is based in Bend, Oregon, the lifelong home of founder, Carol Healy. Both Carol and her husband Tom grew up in the small community located in the heart of Oregon, at the base of the Cascade Mountains. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: [0:45] Tom Healy joins Jeremy to talk about The No-Bake Cookie. [2:10] Who was the first customer? How did they expand production? [3:30] Tom talks about getting The No-Bake Cookie featured on QVC. [4:00] Tom's son, Eric joins Jeremy to talk about Avocado Chips. [6:15] Where can you find Avocado Chips? What is Eric proud of from the journey? In this episode… Remember when the days when the things you snacked on were made from simple ingredients? These days, there's no telling what number of lab-grown chemicals and ingredients are used in the snacks we feed our kids and ourselves! What is the solution? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you'll hear from both Tom and Eric Healy. In their conversation with Jeremy, Tom and Eric talk about how they got their business off of the ground, what it took to develop their snacks made with simple ingredients, and much more. Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to learn from Tom and Eric's fascinating story! When you start a new company, one of the biggest fears is how will you find an audience for your product or service. Where would you start if you had to start tomorrow? How would you bring in customers or distributors for your product? Tom Healy was convinced that he had something special the No Bake Cookie he and his wife created. After reaching out to several distributors and wondering which one would bite on the no-bake cookie, they were thrilled to hear Nordstrom would carry the cookies at their Espresso Coffee Bars. What can you learn from Tom's story and his success with Nordstrom? Did you know that Avocado chips are notoriously difficult to turn into chips? Think about it; avocados are a very finicky fruit with a smooth and creamy texture. The significant challenge of turning avocados into chips didn't deter Eric Healy; he had the vision for a healthy snack with simple ingredients. After numerous trials and tests, Eric and his team were able to successfully create their product, AvoLov Avocado Chips. When they unveiled the end result at Exo West, Eric was amazed at the overwhelmingly positive response from the public. Building and Selling a Tech Startup with Alex Bates Co-Founder of Mtelligence
Alex Bates has spent the last decade bringing artificial intelligence and machine learning to the forefront of the industrial market. In 2016, Alex sold his company, Mtell to AspenTech for $38 million. Unlike most tech startups, Alex and his co-founder raised only $1m in funding and maintained ownership of the majority of the company. As part of the acquisition, Alex had to stay with AspenTech for two years. Now, he's dedicating his life to driving AI tech forward. Alex wrote his book, "Augmented Mind: Al, Superhumans and the Next Economic Revolution", he is an active angel investor, and he is a partner in AI incubator The Sandbox. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: [3:10] Jeremy introduces his guest, Alex Bates. [5:15] What is the difference between AI and IA? Where did Mtelligence come from? [13:50] How did Alex and his team approach larger organizations? [15:45] Alex talks about how the business grew. How did they choose which product to focus on? [19:15] The highs and lows of a startup. [21:30] Alex talks about the acquisition process and tips for making it succeed. [25:30] What was the moment like when Alex decided to leave Aspen Technology? [27:15] Alex talks about the AI projects he is working on with his incubator. [33:15] What led Alex to write his book, "Augmented Mind?" [35:30] Practical applications of augmented intelligence. [37:00] Why intuition can make all the difference. [39:25] How far away are we from prolific self-driving cars? [43:15] Why Alex believes our economic model will soon be obsolete. [44:45] Alex talks about getting into a "Flow state." [48:15] What is Alex's favorite aspect of his book? [51:30] Alex shares a low moment from his career. [54:15] A proud moment from Alex's career. In this episode… What goes into creating and then selling a tech startup? Where does a leader go after reaching that zenith of success? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you'll hear from entrepreneur and innovator Alex Bates. In his conversation with Jeremy, Alex talks about where the idea for Mtell came from, how they were able to grow the company, what the acquisition process was like, why he loves working on AI, and much more. If you've ever wanted a peek inside the world of a tech startup, this is the episode for you. Don't miss it! If you were to script how a tech company would get started how would write it? Chances are, you probably wouldn't come up with a story the like one Alex Bates shares. He happened to meet his business partner on a camping trip where the two hit it off and eventually decided to go into business together creating, Mtell. They dabbled with augmented reality for a brief period of time and then ultimately landed on their work bringing artificial intelligence and machine learning to the forefront of the industrial market. What can you learn from Alex's story with Mtell? How in the world does a tech startup like Mtell grab the attention and interest of big businesses like Exxon Mobil? As it turns out, it is about as challenging as it sounds! Alex and his team knew that they had something special with the idea and solutions they were coming up with at Mtell, but they struggled to get any businesses to take them seriously. Eventually, Alex would learn the secret; you can't be a jack-all-trades; you've got to master one specific niche and build out from there. As challenging and frustrating as those early days were Alex, is thankful for all the lessons he has learned along the way. As they built Mtell up, Alex and his business partner entertained offers from serious businesses and investors who wanted to acquire the tech startup. Unfortunately, many of the interested parties would get a close up look and then back out. Can you imagine what that type of experience does the morale of a business leader? Alex didn't let the fail acquisitions keep him down; he stayed focused on growing the business and doing everything he could to add value. A little over ten years since its inception, Alex and his business partner were able to successfully sell Mtell in 2016 to Aspen Technology. Where is the future of our society headed? Will AI and augmented tech end up taking over our lives or will we go in a different direction. Alex Bates is convinced that we will see more self-driving cars and other improvements become mainstream and accessible. When you hear from Alex, you really get the sense that he has a hopeful and optimistic view of the future. He even believes that our current economic model will soon be obsolete. [20:10] Howard talks about the future of StartEngine. [23:00] The lowest moment and proudest moment in business for Howard. In this episode… Can you imagine a business built around helping startups get the funding they need? Why do startup entrepreneurs need help? Why can't they get the funding they need on their own? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you'll hear from innovator and entrepreneur, Howard Marks. In his conversation with Jeremy, Howard talks about how he got started in the gaming industry, why he decided to start StartEngine, what it takes to raise money for startups, plans for the future, challenges faced along the way, and much more. You don't want to miss a minute of this engaging episode featuring Howard's story! Where do you go after you've spent a large portion of your career working in the software and gaming industries? Do you use that experience to start your own software or gaming company from the ground up or do you do something else entirely? Howard Marks was ready for a change and realized that there weren't any startup accelerators or any programs to help young entrepreneurs get started in the LA area. To fill the gap and put his business experience to use, Howard and his business partner, Ron Miller created StartEngine. StartEngine's mission is to help entrepreneurs achieve their dreams by democratizing access to capital. If you were tasked with creating a startup from scratch, what would be your first step? Where do you think you'd find funding? How would you test and validate your ideas? There are nearly 6 million businesses in the US, yet the majority of these companies have a difficult time accessing capital, whether through public markets or venture capital. After starting out as a tech accelerator, the team at StartEngine decided to pivot their focus to helping startups raise capital by building a crowdfunding platform. StartEngine was empowered to make this pivot with the passage of the JOBS Act in 2012. For the first time, anyone, regardless of wealth, could invest in private businesses and buy shares of stock, debt, revenue share, and more. What keeps you in the fight? Seriously! What is it that motivates you each and every day to go to work and engage in your profession? Do you love problem-solving? Do you enjoy dreaming up big and ambitious projects? Or is there something else that animates and motivates you? Howard Marks views his work as a responsibility he has to be a productive member of society and but beyond that; he loves helping startups. When Howard looks back at his journey of success, he notices a lot of lucky breaks along the way, and he wants to play an active roll in helping others enjoy the success he has experienced. Simplifying the Shift Schedule with Cory Warfield Co-Founder of ShedWool
Cory Warfield is the co-founder of ShedWool. ShedWool is an employee scheduling and workforce management software company. What that means is they help staff at companies fill a shift or take on an additional shift. So if someone works at a restaurant they don't have to call all their buddies to see who can cover for them. They can put it in the ShedWool schedule and someone can pick up the shift easily. Early on they were able to work with companies like IBM, American Airlines, BP, Four Seasons and several other high-profile companies. Cory worked in the hospitality industry for years where he saw the need for a scheduling app. He is also the co-founder of Mentor You Global which is a pro bono consulting platform. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: [3:20] Jeremy introduces his guest, Cory Warfield. [5:30] Where did the idea for ShedWool come from? [11:40] What caused Cory and the ShedWool team to change their price model? [15:00] Cory talks about their early free model. [20:00] How client feedback helped Cory make a positive shift in the business. [23:00] Cory talks about connecting with high profile corporations. [28:00] What was the post that Cory wrote that went viral? [32:00] Tips for growing your following and professional network. [35:30] How does Cory decide which industries to target? [38:50] Cory talks about ShedWool working with Moonrise. [42:00] What is Mentor You? [50:00] Why did Cory eventually accept outside funding? Who did he hire first? [54:00] A low moment in business for Cory. [57:00] Why Cory turned down a buy out offer. [59:20] Closing thoughts from Cory. In this episode… Did you know that one of the most complicated aspects of the hospitality industry is creating and navigating the shift schedule? Managers and employees stress about their shift schedule more than almost any other aspect of their job. What is the solution? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you'll hear from innovator and entrepreneur, Cory Warfield. In his conversation with Jeremy, Cory opens up about how he got the idea for ShedWool, why they decided to change their pricing model, how they were able to connect with high profile organizations, tips for growing your network, and much more. You don't want to miss a minute of this engaging episode featuring Cory's story! Pain points often show you where innovation is needed. There are so many great ideas out there just waiting for someone to realize that there is no need to settle for the way things have always been. Cory Warfield leveraged his twenty years of experience in the hospitality industry to address an issue that bugged him and his industry peers for years, the shift schedule. Cory was convinced that there had to be a better way to handle the constant frustration over staffing issues, so he went to work on a solution. It wasn't long before the vision, and the groundwork for ShedWool, Cory's solution to shift scheduling issues started to form. Solving a problem is one thing: finding the right price to charge for the solution is another thing entirely. Cory's dream was to offer ShedWool as a free solution, but he soon realized that there wasn't a clear path forward for the financial viability of his solution without a pricing model. While Cory was able to get some high profile organizations to try ShedWool early on, the free aspect of the platform caused some businesses to hold back, not knowing if it would go the distance. Now, they've created a reasonable pricing model at ShedWool, and the brand is thriving. What can you learn from Cory's experience with the pricing model? One of the best ways to make a name for your brand or business is to expand your personal and professional sphere of influence. Many business leaders are turning to LinkedIn to make these connections and grow their profile. As he increased his engagement on LinkedIn, Cory started to notice his profile rise and his circle of influence expand. Is there a secret to Cory's expanded reach? Not really. Cory simply took the time to engage with influencers on LinkedIn by liking and commenting on their posts; he also took the time to create content that caused people to engage with him. Do you want to expand your reach as Cory did? If you needed to expand your reach right now, what would you do? Where would you start? Thankfully, Cory was kind enough to share his tips for growing your network. Get to know your network personally. A little extra attention goes a long way! Step up your engagement efforts! [5:00] Alex talks about getting into a "Flow state." [8:45] What is Alex's favorite aspect of his book, "Augmented Mind?" [12:00] Alex shares a low moment from his career. [14:45] A proud moment from Alex's career. In this episode… Did you know that one of the most important lessons a leader can discover is to learn to adapt? It's true! From the lowest valleys to the highest mountain tops, a leader needs to know when to keep forging ahead and when to challenge the competition. On this episode of Inspired Insider, you'll hear from entrepreneur and innovator, Alex Bates. In his conversation with Jeremy, Alex talks about getting into a flow state, what he loved about writing his book, challenges he has faced on his journey, and much more. Don't miss this great opportunity to learn from Alex's fascinating perspective! Some people learn to adapt later in life while others have to learn from an early age, where do you fit? Did you have to learn how to make your voice heard in a crowded home with many siblings or did you only learn to adapt recently in your career as you've faced new challenges? Alex Bates has been learning to adapt his thinking and his approach to life from a young age. He remembers having to fight with his brother for a time slot in front of his families only computer and adjusting to new situations when his family moved from city to city. This early life experience of having to adapt and augment his thinking has served Alex well. Looking back on one of the lowest moments in his career, Alex says that they nearly shut Mtelligence down when the first offer to buy the company fell through. Reaching back to his days of nearly constant change and adversity, Alex continued to forge ahead with his team and ultimately sold Mtelligence to the tune of $38 million. While everyone won't have a career as successful as Alex's, resilience and tenacity are important and valuable lessons to learn. Today, Alex is focused on angel investing, promoting his new book, and exploring the possibilities of AI. What can you learn from Alex's story? In this episode… Why is it so difficult to have clear conversations using technology like Skype and FaceTime? You'd think that with all of our innovation over the years that we'd be able to speak with someone without all static and interference that accompanies those services. On this episode of Inspired Insider, you'll hear from radio host and entrepreneur, Tim Sinclair. In his conversation with Jeremy, Tim talks about his where the idea for Ringr came from, how he built his team, what the development process was like, challenges he has faced along the way, and much more. Don't miss a minute of this fascinating episode featuring Tim's story! Did you know that most profitable ideas come from solving a common issue that many people struggle with? It's true! From the creation of vacuums to other household products like the personal computer, ideas come from someone saying, let's find a solution. For years, Tim Sinclair was dissatisfied with the sound quality and the lack of clear conversations he could have with guests as a radio host. The idea for Ringr knocked around in Tim's head for several years until he was finally ready to make his idea a reality, the only problem was, he wasn't a tech guy. Soon, Tim went to work gathering a team that could help him come up with the technology that would be needed to facilitate clear conversations on the Ringr platform. Tim knew the problem and he knew how to lead and inspire people, but that was it. Once he got the people in the room who could build Ringr, he went to work connecting with his network and figured out what the next step of the process would need to be. Thankfully, a wealthy friend put Tim in touch with an angel investment group who took a chance on Tim and the fledgling Ringr platform. After they started to bring in the right people and get the funding they needed to get the idea off of the ground, Tim joined an incubator group called, Ocean Accelerator. This experience with Ocean wasn't just a class here or there, or even a meeting via Skype, joining the Ocean Accelerator meant that Tim would have to move 250 miles away for the next six months. Talk about going from zero to sixty! Looking back, Tim points to this experience with Ocean as providing critical information he needed to lay the foundation and set Ringr up for long-term success. Tim's journey building Ringr wasn't a stroll in the park; startups never are! Along the way, they'd have to figure out how to price their services and deal with competition. Eventually, Tim and his team landed on a free trial version of their service alongside tiered pricing options. Initially, Tim wanted to provide a free version with unlimited use, but that concept wasn't feasible from a profitability standpoint. Today, Ringr is on solid ground providing clear conversations for thousands of users daily. What can you learn from Tim's journey with Ringr? Can you really build an entire business model off of creating events that cater to kids and families? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you'll hear from business leader and innovator, Chad Collins. In his conversation with Jeremy, Chad opens up about exploring YouTube with his daughter, what led them to create their own YouTube channel, how he ended up planning large scale family-friendly events, and much more. Don't miss a minute of this fascinating episode featuring Chad's story! Did you know that some of the best ideas are often discovered during the most ordinary tasks? Little did Chad Collins know that playing Legos with his daughter would end up taking him down the path of starting his own business. After Chad had introduced Legos to his daughter, she started exploring YouTube Lego channels. Soon after that, the two created a YouTube channel of their own talking about Legos, unboxing Legos, and engaging with their audience along the way. From that whole experience, Chad noticed that there was an opening in the event space for families like his that wanted a family-friendly event centered on something they loved like Legos. If you are a parent, you know the struggle of trying to find family-friendly events that everyone can enjoy. There are only so many times that you can take your kid to the local zoo, museum, or park. What do you do when you've exhausted all of those options? Looking for a local event that they could take their Lego themed YouTube channel to, Chad discovered that there were none in his area. When they couldn't find any in-state or nearby events, the idea to create their own event started to germinate in Chad's mind. Soon, Chad found himself connecting with friends and followers to gauge their interest in a Lego-themed event and then the idea started to become a reality. When was the last time you worked so hard on a project that ended up better than you could have ever imagined? Most people will never know the wonderful feeling that comes from taking an idea and building it into a functioning business. For eighteen long months, Chad had worked his day job, then after dinner spent time on his YouTube channel, all the while planning his first event. You might be wondering when Chad would sleep; he's likely still catching up on those missed hours. But all of his hard work paid off, and Chad was able to finally walk into his boss's office one day and say those words that every budding entrepreneur wants to say, "I quit." What can you learn from Chad's story? Do you ever think of what your legacy will be? That might sound a little morbid or pre-mature depending on your age, but the truth is, everyone should consider how they are impacting the world around them, not just in the present. What started as a fun experience with his daughter, Chad has since built it into a thriving business model. They no longer create YouTube videos together, but Chad's daughter does play an important role in many of their events. As he considers his daughter's future, Chad is ultimately focused on one thing, helping her succeed.
