Today we’re learning from Zara Saleem, the founder of Delhicious. A 100% natural Ayurvedic-inspired skincare brand that started in her kitchen while on mat leave.And this has many important insights packed in here; for Zara it was a veryyyy slow start but at some point, the TikTok gods kicked in and changed the game. We also talk about how hard the challenges of building a business are, especially when we see the highlights splashed across social media. I loved this episode and felt like we can all relate to the ups and downs of building a business and what it truly entails.When it comes to the financials, Zara was able to bootstrap Delhicious with a slow and steady approach. Starting with just a couple of hundred pounds, she was able to just wing it and see how far she could take this. Skincare's low barrier to entry is a huge help when it comes to this, it's totally doable to start a skincare business with a low initial investment. Start scrappy, go slow, prove out the concept, and just start there. If you're going to spend too much too early, you're going to feel that. More so emotionally you're going to feel that loss. So as much as you can, save and do things yourself before letting go. Relieve some of that pressure off your shoulders. This was such an inspirational story that shows there is absolutely nothing truly stopping you from starting a business today. Today we’re chatting to Meha Agrawal, the founder of Silk + Sonder! Silk + Sonder is a guided self care and mental wellness platform and community, generating millions of dollars in recurring revenue and serving tens of thousands of women across the US.I thought this episode was so cool because Meha is a pro at blending DTC with tech and community. We talk through her start and how she got her first customers, what makes her community sticky and the lessons she learned from raising millions of dollars in capital; and it’s not what you might think!Meha ended up raising $4M across a pre-seed and a seed back in 2020, and I was so excited to dig into her story. The first thing to remember is that getting your first cheque doesn’t make the other cheques magically appear. Every investor is different, every investor cared about a different part of your business. You have to be able to speak to the power of community if that’s what they’re interested in, CPG if that’s what they’re interested in. Essentially, treat investors how you would treat your customers. And a real golden nugget is that going out to raise when you don’t necessarily need the funding is the best time to raise. It will allow you to run that process authentically which is so important. Today we’re chatting to Rebecca Veksler, the founder of SoL Cups! After going through a chronic health issue, Rebecca started this reusable cups business alongside her mum while she was back living with her during rehabilitation and since then it’s become one of the top 4 reusable cup companies globally.We talk through her journey of building this business from the ground up but losing everything when the pandemic hit, the lessons she wishes she knew when she was starting out and how she approached global expansion.When it comes to global expansion, there are two main points. Firstly, don’t expand globally if you’re not profitable and highly successful in the country where you started. Secondly, you really have to be there. Launching in another country is no different than launching in the country where you’re from. The reason it works is that you’re present, you’re available. Rebecca owes her success to the luxury she had to fly and to actually be there, boots on the ground. That first interaction. Showing face. It's absolutely key to dive into the country, the culture, the dynamic of the business relations, and really understand that interaction. Have the respect and time to join it.
