When we first changed the focus of the show several years ago, we caught a ton of heat for it. For weeks (months?), we heard over and over about how we didn't care about liberty anymore, that we'd given up our principles, that all we cared about was money, yadda yadda yadda. But we never felt like we were "giving up on liberty," whatever that might mean. We realized that liberty isn't fought for in the political sphere. If you've gotten to that point, you've already lost. Liberty is preserved and sustained by those who can preserve and sustain themselves. It's not something you ask for. It's something you create. We must each create our own liberty, and we must do it together. Fast-forward a couple years, and now lots of people are finally coming around to realize that we were right all along. And you get to choose how that makes you feel. Is it "blackpilling"? That is, does it make you feel depressed and hopeless? Over the past several years, we've witnessed the collapse of trust in institutions that had been built over decades. Most sensemaking apparatuses were formerly generally accepted by everyone. We're talking about corporate media outlets, universities, public health bureaucracies, etc. Now that they've revealed themselves to be completely captured by political corruption, people are scrambling to find new sources they can trust. This is creating a rise in tribalism as people retreat into their corners. Now could be a great time for people who value liberty and prosperity to evangelize those without a home. Yet so many liberty-oriented communities are bogged down in elitism, virtue signaling, and in-group jargon. Not long ago, it seemed like it was the crazy SJW crowd who were inundating us with weird new words, where the complexity and ambiguity seemed to be a feature, not a bug. Now you can hardly dip your toe into a libertarian or libertarian-adjacent community (like crypto, for example) without finding yourself surrounded by people who seem more interested in advertising their intelligence or ideological purity than in actually providing value or helping people out of bad situations. It's official: Jason is leaving California. We recorded this episode on July 28, just before he left for the weekend to scope out his new digs in Arizona. Up to this point, the business and social opportunities Los Angeles offers made the sunshine tax worth paying. But everyone has their breaking point, the point where the costs outweigh the benefits. And true freedom is having the ability to recognize that, uproot yourself, and relocate on a whim. No need to waste time begging a passel of corrupt lying politicians and bureaucrats to change their spots. We're in a period of crisis that isn't close to being resolved. In fact, if history is any indicator, it's about to get much worse before it gets better. But you don't have to be caught up in all of that. You can choose the extent to which the crisis will affect your way of life. This is what true liberty looks like. This is what Nomadic Wealth is all about. You must control the source of your income and make that income mobile. When supply chains start breaking down and people start getting locked down in their houses again, you'll have the opportunity to rise above the crisis and dictate your own outcome. If you aren't maximizing your own income potential and financial freedom, you are stealing from yourself and your family. There's one more thing. As we move into this next era, where the Boomer generation falls out of power and Gen X and millennials become the new leaders of institutions, you won't survive as an isolated island unto yourself. Controlling your income and making it mobile will get you part of the way to true freedom. Most importantly, you must connect yourself with a network of likeminded people. As people increasingly distance themselves from national identities, new tribes are arising. Even if you don't identify with a tribe, you will be identified with one. So it's incumbent upon you to ensure that 1) you control which tribe you're identified with, and 2) you make it a tribe that will make you better. That's our goal with the Nomad Network. When our Nomad Network members heard this episode live, they said it was one of the best shows we’ve ever had. Perhaps that’s because we just finished reading two of the most interesting books we’ve ever read. The first one is “The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy - What the Cycles of History Tell Us About America’s Next Rendezvous with Destiny”, written by Neil Howe and William Strauss. They describe an 80-year generational cycle that has persisted throughout Western civilization since at least the 1400s. Written in 1997, the book predicts the 2008 housing crisis, and they predicted the COVID crisis, to within a few years of when both events actually happened. If we follow the pattern their theory describes, we should expect some type of major global total-war-style event over the next 3-6 years. Perhaps we’re already in it. But that’s only the bad news. The good news is, the cycle predicts that that major event will be followed by a restart of the cycle into an era of peace, prosperity, and growth, a la the post-war era in America (1946-1963). The second book is called “Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life”, by Luke Burgis. The book draws on the seminal work of French polymath Rene Girard, who introduced the concept of mimetic theory to the world. According to Girard, we are driven by our desires, yet we don’t arrive at these desires independently. We learn both how and what to desire by mimicking of other people. Like gravity, mimesis is a powerful force that always affects us, even (especially!) when we aren’t aware of it. When you combine these two concepts — the fourth turning and mimetic desire — you create an incredibly powerful tool for both predicting the nature of the next crisis and identifying the best path through it.
