He is a pioneering figure in healthcare, being the first in California to receive recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for delivering quality back pain care. He founded First Principles of Movement, aiming to combat global inactivity and promote health and disability prevention. Liebenson conducted research as a Visiting Scholar at Prof. Stuart McGill’s Spine Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of Waterloo and founded L.A. Sports & Spine, offering health span and performance enhancement services. He studied under Dr. Karel Lewit and Dr. Vladimir Janda, initiating the Visiting Scholar's Program at his alma mater. Liebenson is faculty at Parker University and has served on editorial boards for various journals. He's also the first chiropractic member of the McKenzie Institute (U.S.) Board of Directors and a former Associate Professor at Murdoch University. Liebenson authored the acclaimed book/DVD "Rehabilitation of the Spine: A Person-Centered Approach" and "The Functional Training Handbook", translated into multiple languages. Additionally, he produced a DVD series on functional training and served as a chiropractor for NBA's Los Angeles Clippers, and consulted for MLB's Arizona Diamondbacks, NFL's Seattle Seahawks, and other notable organizations.

👉🏻 Our guest is Dr. Stephen May MA, FCSP, Dip MDT, MSc, PhD. Stephen May trained as a physiotherapist in Leeds, UK, and graduated in 1990; he then worked in the NHS, UK, in musculoskeletal care. In 2002 he became a senior lecturer and then Reader at Sheffield Hallam University teaching on research issues and musculoskeletal care, and supervising many MSc and PhD students. He has written textbooks with Robin McKenzie detailing Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy in the Extremities (2000), Lumbar Spine (2003), and Cervical Spine (2006), chapters in textbooks, and articles in scientific journals; with over 100 publications in total. He has served on several national and international committees relating to guideline development and the McKenzie Institute and has peer-reviewed numerous international physical therapy and musculoskeletal journals. In 2006 he was awarded a Fellowship by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy for contributions to the profession. He has more or less retired since 2019.

👉🏻 Our guest is Dr. Lynn N. McKinnis, DPT, PT, OCS. Lynn graduated from St. Louis University in 1981. She is a staff physical therapist at Concordia Visiting Nurses in Butler, PA, an adjunct professor in the Physical Therapy Dept at St. Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania, and a Faculty Affiliate at the University of Montana and the University of South Florida. Lynn is known for her work in the field of diagnostic imaging as it relates to the physical therapy profession. In 1997 she authored Fundamentals of Orthopedic Radiology, the first imaging textbook written by and for physical therapists. Currently, Fundamentals of Musculoskeletal Imaging is in its fifth edition, translated into several other languages, and used by the majority of DPT curriculums in the USA. She collaborated with a radiologist for a new text, Musculoskeletal Imaging Handbook: A Guide for the Primary Practitioner, written for all primary access clinicians, including physician assistants and nurse practitioners. She has lectured across the USA, in many DPT programs, and has presented numerous continuing educational courses at state and national APTA and AOTA conferences. Lynn became Pennsylvania’s first Orthopedic Clinical Specialist in 1989, and twenty years later received the APTA’s Outstanding Contribution to the Professional Literature Award for her publications on diagnostic imaging for physical therapists. Lynn is also a JOSPT Co-Editor for Musculoskeletal Imaging.

He is a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He is also the Director of the Musculoskeletal Research in Primary Care Program at Brooke Army Medical Center. He received his Masters in Physical Therapy and Doctor of Science Degrees from Baylor University. He received his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Temple University and his Ph.D. from the University of Newcastle. He completed a manual therapy fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center and a research postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Utah. He is the recipient of a Lifetime Research Award from the US Army Medical Specialist Corps, a 2-time Rose Award recipient for Excellence in Research from the APTA, and the Eugene Michaels New Investigator Award from the APTA. He has over 150 publications and has received over $20 million in competitive research grant funding. His research interests revolve around identifying and implementing optimal care pathways for musculoskeletal pain disorders.

Laura Keivel joined APTA in 2019 and is the grassroots and political affairs specialist. Prior to joining APTA, she was the advocacy program and events manager at the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. At ACS CAN, she ran the Society’s largest event, the Leadership Summit & Lobby Day legislative fly-in. Laura served as manager of grassroots advocacy for five years at the Arthritis Foundation. There, she grew the grassroots network from 68,000 to 120,000, managed and expanded the grasstops Ambassador Program, and created an advocacy program for children and teens. She received a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of Dayton.
Brian W. Allen, JD, is a congressional affairs specialist at APTA. Before joining the association in January 2022, Brian spent over five years on Capitol Hill, starting as a law clerk for the House Judiciary Committee and culminating in his role as legislative director and senior counsel to a member of the House of Representatives. Among other policy issues, he focused on health care, transportation, natural resources, and education. He received his bachelor’s degree in history and Spanish from Roanoke College and his law degree from Washington and Lee University School of Law. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.

Stuart is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus (after 32 years at the University of Waterloo, Canada) who authored over 240 scientific journal papers, and 4 books and mentored over 40 graduate students during this scientific journey. Investigations in the laboratory, training center, and back pain experimental research clinic probed back injury and pain mechanisms, rehabilitation approaches, and performance training. As a consultant, he has provided expertise on low back injury to various government agencies, many corporations and legal firms, and hundreds of professional/international athletes and teams worldwide. He is regularly referred to special patient cases from the international medical community for opinion. Many of the athlete clients have returned set records and won international competitions in many sports. His books include Back Mechanic, written for the lay public with pain (also in 20 languages), Low Back Disorders, third edition (2016), written for clinicians, Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance, 2017, written for coaches and athletes, Gift of Injury (2018), a manual for rehabilitating the back-injured strength athlete. His work has been recognized with many awards including the Order of Canada (2020) for international leadership in back pain issues.
