300: Joel Marion Part 1 | $0 to $100 Million in Sales in ONE Year?

Joel Marion is the co-founder and CMO of BioTrust Nutrition with more than $600 million in sales, 3.5 million customers and 17 million email subscribers. Joel is also the founder of transformation insider. Joel is one of the top email marketers in the world. Joel helped propel BioTrust to be one of the fastest-growing companies in history.  Episode Highlights:  Joel went to a private Christian school and was athletic growing up. The lessons Joel learned in a team atmosphere playing basketball. Being competitive teaches you what’s required to be someone who’s winning more often than losing. There’s a lot of trust that’s built in the team atmosphere. After going away to school he realized all of his best friends were back home. After Joel got introduced to Body 4 Life it changed the way he was working out. How Joel completely changed his personal health and won the Body 4 Life contest. After being published by his friend, Joel got rejected from other fitness magazines and asked for feedback. You have to learn what people want and then give them that. Joel became a teacher for three years while he was getting other projects off the ground. Joel got his first book bought and then it bombed. Why you can’t play the “if” game. Joel wanted to make $20,000 a month and became obsessed with direct response marketing. Joel took his same book that flopped and repackaged it into a course and made almost $500,000 on it. Joel realized that to take his business to the next level he would need to grow his network and pursue a joint venture. Joel started BioTrust and grew to over $100 million in sales in a year. In their first month, they did $4 million with one product funnel. 3 Key Points: When you take uncommon actions you can achieve uncommon results. Sell them what they want, give them what they need. You can scale what you do quickly when you get your entire industry on your team. Tweetable Quotes: “You have to learn what people want and then give them that.” -Joel “You don’t know what you don’t know until you learn it” -Joel “The reason I can have so much success is that I have the whole industry on my side.” -Joel Resources Mentioned: Visit Travis’ website at http://www.buildyournetwork.co/ (Buildyournetwork.co) Join the Build Your Network Facebook group http://www.buildyournetwork.co/fb/ (BYN.media/fb) Join the Build Your Network University Facebook group here https://www.facebook.com/groups/bynuniversity (byn.university). 299: Freestyle Friday | Book Review: How to Get a Meeting with Anyone

Your host Travis Chappell reviews one of the best networking books he’s ever read, How to Get a Meeting with Anyone. The book has practical strategy you can implement right away. The book gives away some of the behind the scenes secret stuff. Episode Highlights:  The book is very similar to everything Travis teaches but written more for C-level executives and salesmen looking to get to those execs. Travis is about the newer ways of building relationships. Contact marketing campaigns can have 100% success rates. You need to do your research - send people personalized things that always make it through. Executive assistants are your friends, not your enemies. It’s not favor for favor, you still need to add value with no expectation of return. Key Points: Contact marketing and building relationships can work the same way. Everyone is looking for the short cut, do your research. Make sure that you respect the hierarchy that’s in place and be valuable to the executive assistants. Tweetable Quotes: “Most marketing campaigns have around a 1% success rate, so anything more than that should draw your attention.” -Travis “It’s important to send people something specific to get your foot in the door.” -Travis “It’s not just a numbers game, it’s a quality game.” -Travis Resources Mentioned: Visit Travis’ website at https://www.travischappell.com (https://www.travischappell.com) Visit http://travischappell.com/YouTube (TravisChappell.com/YouTube) and subscribe. He worked his way through a computer science degree and then after a few jobs he got put in a sales role. He created Goldmine which was essential Outlook and Salesforce before either existed. Jon was different because he had two entrepreneurial mentors. You can always go get a job with another company, so be brave enough to try something.  When you do have responsibilities it’s harder to jump off the cliff, you have to take into account how things will affect your family. What holds people back is not knowing how to get started. How Jon made Goldmine scalable and they got to $100 million in revenue. Jon learned things in his jobs that he worked his way through college with. Jon learned how customers buy software by working in a computer store and in software sales. You have to tell stories and get other people to tell those stories to spread the gospel of the technology. Service is the new sales. The difference between competition and collaboration. You have to listen to and iterate with your customer base. Jon came out of retirement to unify social and CRM with a new product. Why building software is a lot like writing songs. If you don’t know any what then it doesn’t matter who. The most effective way Jon has connected with people: humanness. LinkedIn is like a lobby or business persona. His companies have won numerous high profile business accolades and he has been featured in multiple media outlets. Judge hosts the Scale and Exit podcast and is an acclaimed author and speaker. Judge talks to your host Travis Chappell about how to scale your business, how to build a sellable company, and why you should be building a personal brand. Episode Highlights:  Judge grew up in an average middle-class family with hardworking parents. He grew up appreciating what things would cost. Surrounding yourself with the right people makes a huge difference. You have to have a heightened sense of urgency to win. You can’t build a real company unless you have people. Judge majored in business at TCU in the late 90’s early 2000’s. Judge started a web design and development company in college. Judge went personally bankrupt in his first business. Recurring revenue is powerful and necessary to business. A lot of people want to be entrepreneurs but they aren’t willing to sacrifice. Judge’s second business was a digital marketing company and then he started growing and flipping companies. What Judge’s next step will be. Why personal branding is important. Many current CEO’s are missing the personal branding element. When you have a personal brand you’re more accessible and people are more interested in you. If you have a true personal brand it’s easier to start doing the next thing. You have to be authentic and you have to choose a side. Believe in growth culture but try not to copy anyone. Who you know is more important - you have to know your stuff but without the network it doesn’t matter. On the internet, you can get access to almost anybody - reach out and be thoughtful. Super successful people like to give.   The Random Round: What profession other than your own do you think it would be fun to attempt? Professional football If you could sit on a park bench with anyone past or present and talk with them for an hour, who would it be and why? Jesus How do you like to consume content?
