161: True Crime w/ Norm Wilner

Few directors have been able to reach the heights AND depths that film veteran Clint Eastwood has in his 60 years of filmmaking, and we brought on writer Norm Wilner (NOW Toronto) to discuss every up, and every down, via Eastwood's painfully tepid mystery/drama TRUE CRIME.We discuss Eastwood's endless history of being torn apart by critics, only to come back with a career defining, box office hit, and his complicated relationship to the republican party and race relations. Furthermore, how does a man who looked so good in his prime deal with the fact that he's aging? Well, it DEFINITLEY gets put on the screen in very bizarre ways.Grit your teeth, swallow a fistfull of gravel, and get ready to step into the mind and career of one of the most fascinating directors of all time.Find Norm at: wilnervision.comPatreon: patreon.com/podcastlikeits1989Twitter: twitter.com/podcastlikeitsInstagram: instagram.com/podcastlikeitsReddit: reddit.com/r/PodcastLikeIts Hosted on Acast. 160: Universal Solider 2 w/ Tom Lorenzo

Writer Tom Lorenzo joins us to tear apart Universal Soldier: The Return, a sequel that never should have been made. After an alright first film, and two made-for-television disasters, the Universal Soldier franchise seemed to be dead in the water. So why was 45 million dollars thrown at a sequel? Must have been a pretty great script, right? Wrong. Universal Soldier: The Return is an absolute mess, and there is plenty for us to discuss when it comes to the questionable choices made at every turn, but this stinker of a movie mostly acts as the perfect diving board for conversations on the decline of the action movie genre, Jean-Claude Van Damme's career (and macho-man actors in general), and how a great B-Movie concept can be squandered on a forgettable film.Find Tom at: twitter.com/ragingbull1990Patreon: patreon.com/podcastlikeits1989Twitter: twitter.com/podcastlikeitsInstagram: instagram.com/podcastlikeitsReddit: reddit.com/r/PodcastLikeIts Hosted on Acast. SEX AND THE CITY SATURDAYS: Jarett Wieselman

Social media guru Jarett Wieselman is on the show this week to talk about s2, e11: EVOLUTION.Jarett shares his personal connections to, and thoughts on, the show, including his take on why Carrie is the most sexually repressed character on an otherwise sexually open show, and a shocking story involving his own nose. 159: American Pimp w/ Kirk Fraser

Documentarian/Producer Kirk Fraser (The Life of Rayful Edmund, American Gangster) joins Phil and Kenny to discuss the controversial 1999 documentary AMERICAN PIMP.Interviewing both legal and illegal pimps from all across the country, the Hughes Brothers create an unbiased portrait of the way life is within a subculture most of us are too uncomfortable to talk about outside of comedic stereotypes. Using the unrestrained style of the film as a jumping off point, Kirk provides insight into what it means to present an underrepresented point of view, even if it's one you don't agree with, and how filmmakers at all levels need to better understand the cultures they are putting on screen. We also discuss why this movie was poorly recieved and overlooked at the time of release, and why it is hard (but important) to find today.Find Kirk at: may3rdfilms.com/Patreon: patreon.com/podcastlikeits1989Twitter: twitter.com/podcastlikeitsInstagram: instagram.com/podcastlikeitsReddit: reddit.com/r/PodcastLikeIts Hosted on Acast. SEX AND THE CITY SATURDAYS: Corinne Stikeman

On this week's Sex and the City Saturdays, we're covering one of the more forgettable episodes of the show; THE CASTE SYSTEM. To Phil and Writer/Producer/Guest Corinn Stikeman's delight, even the lesser episodes of SatC tend breed great conversation. From Samantha's less than couth storyline involving a rich man and his servant, to Miranda and Steve's relationship falling apart over their salary gap and a suit, the two have A LOT to cover regarding the way this show tackles the delicacies of interpersonal economics. Plus, stay tuned to the end for a suprising argument in favor of a character we have absolutely slammed throughout this miniseries.Find Corinne at: twitter.com/cocostikemanPatreon: patreon.com/podcastlikeits1989Twitter: twitter.com/podcastlikeitsInstagram: instagram.com/podcastlikeitsReddit: reddit.com/r/PodcastLikeIts Hosted on Acast. 158: Fraiser w/ Carrie Wittmer

Welcome to Woodycast, where we talk about all things Woody Harrelson! Wait....this is a Frasier episode?!With over 100 Primetime Emmy nominations, 37 wins, and a 20 year stint from Kelsey Grammer as the titular pompous radio host, we all knew a Frasiercast was inevitable. Alongside Writer/Critic Carrie Wittmer, Phil taps into season 6 episode 13 "The One Where Woody Shows Up" to not only examine the show itself, and it's role in 90s sitcom culture, but its connections to Cheers, and success in paving its own path. We also talk about Woody Harrelson. Like, a lot. How could we not!Find Carrie at: carriesnotscary.comPatreon: patreon.com/podcastlikeits1989Twitter: twitter.com/podcastlikeitsInstagram: instagram.com/podcastlikeitsReddit: reddit.com/r/PodcastLikeIts Hosted on Acast. 157: At First Sight w/ Corinne Stikeman

Writer/Producer Corinne Stikeman stops by to talk about the romantic drama that critics called "competent but forgettable", "Terrible", and "A crime against humanity": AT FIRST SIGHT. Can Val Kilmer pull off a charming leading man performance, while representing a disability with any level of authenticity or respect? Does director Irwin Winkler find any sort of potent message or quality entertainment in this incredible, perfect-for-the-screen concept? No...the answer is no. But don't worry, Kenny and Phil are here to get you through it! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
