Gospel Fluency (feat. Jeff Vanderstelt)

As men, we can be known for trying to complete a project without reading the instructions. Sometimes we succeed and sometimes we are left with extra parts that we have no idea what they are for. Unfortunately, this is often our approach to the gospel as well. We try to live right and share Jesus with others but we don’t take the time to engross ourselves in the instruction manual – the Bible. In this week’s episode, Jerrad Lopes talks with Jeff Vanderstelt, pastor of Doxa Church in Bellevue, WA, and author of Gospel Fluency, about several topics important to understanding our role as Christian dads including: · What does gospel fluency mean? · How should we discipline our children? · How can we be gospel-centered husbands? Join us as we learn how to truly become fluent in the gospel by learning to immerse ourselves so completely in the truths of the gospel that it becomes our “mother tongue.” Host: Jerrad Lopes Guest: Jeff Vanderstelt is the visionary leader of Saturate and the Soma Family of Churches, is the vision and teaching pastor at Doxa Church in Bellevue, WA, and author. Mentioned during the episode: · Gospel Fluency - Even if they want to, many Christians find it hard to talk to others about Jesus. Is it possible this difficulty is because we're trying to speak a language we haven't actually spent time practicing? To become fluent in a new language, you must immerse yourself in it until you actually start to think about life through it. · JeffVanderstelt.com · Jeff Vanderstelt’s Twitter Scripture references: · Proverbs 20:5 – “The purpose in a man's heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.” Connect with Dad Tired: · To subscribe on iOS, go to our iTunes page and subscribe. · Leave an iTunes review, this lets us and others know what you think and increases the chance that other dads will find us. · Like and Follow Dad Tired on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for updates. · Join our Dad Tired closed Facebook group for men who are trying to figure out how to be better disciples, husbands, fathers, and men.

The Desert

We often judge our relationship with God based on how close or how far we feel from Him. But what about those times when you don’t feel either either? If we don’t feel that same wide-eyed and enthusiastic passion for God, does it mean something is wrong? Join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses how our walk with God can become quiet, steady in the everyday and become less about feelings and more about commitment. When the passion fades, faithfulness takes over. A gospel-centered man shows up every day for Jesus because that is what Jesus did for us. Host: Jerrad Lopes Mentioned during the episode: · Jeff Vanderstelt, pastor, teacher, and speaker · Dr. Tim Chester, pastor, teacher, and author · Shane Claiborne, speaker, activist, and author · John Mark Homer, pastor, and author Scripture references: · Ephesians 2:8-9: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Word Up

Chuck Swindoll once wrote, “I know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, practically speaking, than memorizing Scripture…No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends!” In this episode, host Jerrad Lopes walks us through the practice of memorizing scripture as a foundation of spiritual life and loving scripture to the point that it is written on our hearts. He also shares with listeners a portion of a sermon by Pastor John Piper as he recites scripture from memory. Commentary is good but nothing beats the word of God!! Host: Jerrad Lopes Mentioned during the episode: · Man cold – It’s a real thing! · John Piper – Pastor, teacher and chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary Scripture references: · 2 Timothy 3:16 – “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” Connect with Dad Tired: · To subscribe on iOS, go to our iTunes page and subscribe.

Real Life Gospel Stories

As men, we tend to compartmentalize everything, including our spiritual lives. But when it comes to pointing our children to Christ and His gospel, compartmentalization will never be enough. Scheduling times for reading the Bible, prayer before bed and church attendance should not be our only goal. As dads, we should be looking for everyday moments to point our children to the gospel. Join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses how a father/son outing for frozen yogurt, with his son Elijah, became an opportunity to talk to him about God’s direction for Christians to take care of the needy. If you struggle with how to illustration to your children the relevance of Bible teaching in “real life,” you won’t want to miss this episode. A Taste of Death

The concept of “dying out to self” can be found throughout scripture and it expresses the true essence of the Christian life. God often will bring us into situations that provide us a deeper understanding of truly giving up on our own wants and needs and focusing instead on pouring our lives into furthering the gospel of Christ. In this episode, host Jerrad Lopes discusses his family’s journey into becoming foster parents, the crazy emotions that have come along with their first placement, a 2-year-old little girl, and the insight it has given him into the importance of faithfully leading his family to Jesus by stepping outside his comfort zone and dying to self. When you set aside your own ambition and instead focus on furthering the gospel in your own family “congregation,” you might just change the world! Host: Jerrad Lopes Scripture references: Matthew 16:25 “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” James 1:27 “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” Connect with Dad Tired: To subscribe on iOS, go to our iTunes page and subscribe. Where You Woke Up

The scriptures tell us to go and teach all nations and make them disciples. Many Christians sit back and let others shoulder this commitment, viewing outreach as the responsibility of those in the church who are paid to be ministers. But there is no such thing as a professional Christian. Join host Jerrad Lopes as he discusses how God has called each of us all to be missionaries. From the investment banker to the school janitor, each of us should enter our homes and workplace with the goal of bringing God’s will into that space. Discipleship may look different for each person but one truth remains the same, our designated mission field is wherever we woke up. Host: Jerrad Lopes Scripture references: Matthew 28:19 ESV "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" Mentioned during the episode: Jeff Vanderstelt, author, speaker and coach and trainer for church planters.
