Racism, Hatred and the Moment in American and World Politics

According to Jonathan Greenblatt, National Director and CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, this is a particular fraught moment in the long history of the politics of race and history in America and around the world. We talk to Greenblatt in a special, thought-provoking, wide-ranging interview that touches upon the President's attacks on the members of "The Squad," the perversity of turning accusations of anti-semitism into a racist cudgel, the institutionalization of hate in America and the global rise of ethnographies-nationalism. It is one of the most disturbing trends of our era and you should not miss this essential discussion of why we are here and where we are headed.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/deepstateradio. And Now for Something Even More Stupid and Dangerous Than the Usual Dangerous Stupidity

As the great foreign policy scholar Dean Wormer of Faber College once said, "Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son." It's also no way to run a foreign policy. In fact, you don't even have to be fat or drunk for stupid to screw up a policy. This week has seen some really extraordinary cluelessness from the man who says his gut can steer US international affairs. And we discuss where it all might lead with Edward Luce of the Financial Times, Evelyn Farkas of the German Marshall Fund and Brian Klaas of University College, London. You could miss it. But then you wouldn't know what is about to go terrible wrong(er).Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/deepstateradio. 200th Episode Special, Part I: A Glimmer of Hope?

As part of our celebration of 200th episode, we had a special conversation with Lawrence O'Donnell, host of MSNBC's "The Last Word" and one of the keenest, most candid observers of Washington anywhere. We discuss with him how this moment is different from all others, the critical mistakes we may be making and why nonetheless, there may be reason for hope. Following that we then turn to former U.S. Attorney Harry Litman for a discussion of what to expect from next week's Mueller hearings and beyond. You won't want to miss either conversation. Join us...and then join next week for a 200th Episode special with the folks who got us here, our beloved regulars. As we release our 200th episode, we'd really love to hear your feedback about how and when you listen to podcasts and about how we can improve. It's a Great Time to Be a Nuke!

President Trump became the first American president to enter North Korea. That's the good news. He also seems to be heading for a deal with North Korea that may freeze their nuclear arsenal at 20-60 warheads. That's not so good. It's not good because we will then reward Kim Jong Un for building that arsenal by lifting sanctions, we will get only nominal gains, like the shutdown of perhaps one aging nuclear facility, and because well...it's a deal with a country that has broken its last two nuclear deals with us. The Iranians are watching eagerly thinking, "We want one of those deals." So...maybe let's hold off on the celebrations of a breakthrough for a bit. David Sanger of the New York Times, Rosa Brooks of Georgetown Law Center and Evelyn Farkas of the German Marshall Fund discuss in an important, scary episode. Tune in!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/deepstateradio. Good Question for the Next Debate: Do You Have a Son-in-Law and Will He Control Your Foreign Policy?

So, there was this war with Iran, remember? Then there wasn't. Then there were cyberattacks. But what did they do? And were they legal? And why did we do them? And isn't all this making another war in the Middle East more likely--whether Trump wants it or not? We start our conversation on this issues with a first-rate panel featuring Sharon Weinberger of Yahoo News, Ed Luce of the FT, David Sanger of the NY Times and Ryan Goodman of Just Security. And from there it's off to the Dem debates, the misunderstood nature of "red" states and how the Supreme Court of the United States may just have delivered a real blow to democracy. You don't want to miss this stellar episode of Deep State Radio. This episode of Deep State Radio is brought to you by Mova Globes. 50/50 in 2020: Why So Many Candidates are Pledging Gender Parity in National Security Leadership

From one perspective, this is not a particularly auspicious moment for women at the top ranks of the US government. There are fewer women in leadership roles in the Trump Administration and then, of course, there's the fact the president has been credibly accused of being a rapist. More than once. That said, there are also some very promising signs and one of the most exciting is a new initiative to ensure gender parity at the highest levels of our national security leadership in the next administration. It is called LCWINS and it has caught on with 15 campaigns already and we discuss why with three leaders of the initiative--our own Rosa Brooks of Georgetown University, Beverly Kirk of CSIS and our old friend Julie Smith, currently in residence at the Bosch Academy in Berlin. It's a great and timely discussion of an important issue. Please join us.This episode of Deep State Radio is brought to you by Skillshare.
