On Renewal: A Conversation with Anne-Marie Slaughter
Anne-Marie Slaughter, CEO of the New America Foundation, former head of policy planning at the State Department, has written a new book entitled "Renewal: From Crisis to Transformation in Our Lives, Work and Politics." It could not be more timely, using an experience from Slaughter's professional life to begin an investigation into the honesty required to grow not just as individuals but as a country. It touches upon themes that were dominant in Tuesday's elections and we discuss those themes and more with the author on this latest special episode of DSR. The Sky may not be Falling... but it Certainly is on Fire
The Democrats had a bad night on Tuesday as Glenn Youngkin won the governorship in Virginia and Phil Murphy was barely able to hang on in New Jersey. However, what those results mean remains very unclear. Did Congress's failure to pass the Build Back Better agenda lead to apathy amongst the party faithful? Do Democrats need better candidates? Was this just a thermostatic turn against the party in power? What should the Democrats do to correct course before the midterms? David Rothkopf and Kavita Patel work through these and other questions facing Democratic leaders in the run up to 2022 and 2024 with David Corn of Mother Jones and Jonathan Alter of MSNBC. The Good, the Bad and the Obscene: An Economic Policy Conversation with Jason Furman
While in Europe and in Congressional negotiations, President Biden has brought the global minimum corporate tax closer to reality. Congressional Democrats are debating SALT cap repeal and taxing unrealized capital gains. The Federal Reserve is tapering bond purchases. How should we see these developments? What will their consequences be? How will this impact the political climate in 2022 and beyond? David Rothkopf and Ed Luce of the Financial Times discuss these and other economic issues with Jason Furman, former Chief Economist to President Obama and Aetna Professor of the Practice of Economic Policy at Harvard University. Biden in Europe: Give Credit Where it is Due...and Let's Acknowledge Where More Can Be Done
President Biden is on his second international trip. He started this weekend at the G20 in Rome and is now in Glasgow for the COP26. The trip has already proven productive with President Biden advancing the global corporate minimum tax and striking a new US-EU Steel and Aluminum trade deal. He smoothed over relations with France. And made it clear the US wants to lead on climate. But what more should be done? What more can be done given US domestic politics? David Rothkopf discusses the near and long-term implications of these meetings with Kori Schake of the American Enterprise Institute, Rosa Brooks of the Georgetown University Law Center, and Ben Pauker of Politico. Are We About to Build Back Better? Are We About to Get Serious About January 6th Accountability?
The President and Democratic leaders announced that they are on the verge of transformative legislation that will help children, elders, the environment, our infrastructure, and our growth as a country. When will being on the verge became signed legislation? And will that be accompanied on a parallel track with finally beginning to see some accountability on the January 6 coup attempt? We discuss the first set of developments with Norm Ornstein of AEI and Dr. Kavita Patel of the Brookings Institution and the second set of issues with former US Acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal and NYU Law Professor and co-editor of "Just Security" Ryan Goodman. Only the Rich Can Play: A Conversation with David Wessel
Opportunity Zones sounded like a great idea, provide tax benefits for wealthy Americans to invest in 8,000 areas in the United States that don't receive enough investment and development and everyone wins. Unfortunately, as David Wessel describes in his new book "Only the Rich Can Play: How Washington Works in the New Gilded Age", the vast majority of the benefits of these zones went to the wealthy instead of the communities they were meant to help. This far ranging conversation hits on the roots of this policy failure as well as the latest plans from Democrats to tax billionaires and the global minimum tax on corporations championed by Janet Yellen. Managing Mega-Threats: From China to Facebook...and a Biden Foreign Policy Report Card
As the Biden Administration shifts the focus of U.S. foreign policy to emerging issues and how America can lead in the century ahead, certain megapowers loom as complex threats. One is China. And then we move on to an evaluation of Biden Administration foreign policy so far, the impact of Secretary Blinken's efforts to return diplomacy to centrality in our international relations and what can be done in the next couple years to do better. America is Just Going to Have to Learn to Accept Good News
The Biden Administration, it seems, is on the verge of winning approval for its Build Back Better Package. If the deal is roughly as reported it will be between $1.5 and 2 trillion in fully paid for investments in America. Which means that in this year alone the Biden Administration will have overseen investments of $5 Trillion in the economy, the creation of 5 million jobs (more than the last three GOP administrations added up), distribution fo 200 million plus vaccines, significant economic growth, and much more. You wouldn't know it from reading the press or following social media, but understanding just how big and beneficial all this is may be key to Democratic victories in 2022 which will be essential to preserving democracy in the U.S. We discuss how we got here and how to frame these achievements going forward with California Representative Ro Khanna, the Washington Post's Greg Sargent and Dr. Kavita Patel, formerly of the Obama White House. There is Nothing for You Here: A Conversation with Fiona Hill
Fiona Hill may have risen to public prominence during Donald Trump's first impeachment but there is much more to her story than just her time in the White House. In her new book "There is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the Twenty-First Century", she describes her journey from a coal-mining town in Northern England to studying in Moscow and ultimately to serving three different Presidents. Hill argues that expanding opportunity rather than clinging to the past is the only way to save democracy in America and elsewhere and that Putin and Trump are more alike than you may think. We discuss this fascinating new book with Fiona in a can't miss conversation. Join us.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/deepstateradio.
