January 6th as You Have Never Seen it Before

Best of DSR: FILIBUSTED: GETTING TO THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE US SENATE
Senate “institutionalists” claim the filibuster is a traditional US Senate tool that produces compromise. Nope. It’s a tool that was almost never used during the first 200 years of US history. And when it was used it was almost always used to promote a racist agenda. And now that it is used more often, it is used to obstruct and give disproportionate power to Republicans. The first step to eliminating it is understanding it and that is why we talk to veteran Senate staffer Adam Jentleson, author of an important new book “Kill Switch: The Rise of the Modern Senate and the Crippling of American Democracy.” We discuss what has turned the U.S. Senate from “the world’s greatest deliberative body to the place legislation goes to die” and how to fix it. Best of DSR: TRUMP’S FAILED COUP ATTEMPT: HOW BAD WAS IT, HOW MUCH WORSE COULD IT HAVE BEEN, WHAT TO DO NEXT?
January 6, 2021 is a date few of us will ever forget. On that day, the president of the United States incited a mob to storm the U.S. Capitol. Five people died. Thousands more were terrorized. And now the nation holds its breath to see if the violence has been quelled or new chapters await. Donald Trump now seems certain to become the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice and to forever be seen as the author of a failed coup attempt against the government he had sworn to protect and defend. Rosa Brooks of Georgetown Law, Kori Schake of AEI, Mieke Eoyang of Third Way and David Sanger of the New York Times join us to discuss the impact of the shocking events of the sixth and where we go from here. Beltway Black Box Series: Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA)
The first episode of the Beltway Black Box series was a timely conversation on whether zero trust thinking represents a breakthrough in cyber-security, the hidden risks associated with it and how it is likely to impact companies and the government. Participating were an exceptional group of experts including:
Dmitri Alperovitch, Co-Founder of CrowdStrike and Executive Chairman of the Silverado Policy Accelerator;
Chase Cunningham, Chief Strategy Officer at Ericom Software;
Juliette Kayyem, Chair of the Homeland Security and Security and Global Health Projects at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government;
and David Sanger, Author of The Perfect Weapon and White House and National Security correspondent at the New York Times.
The conversation covers the genesis of ZTA adoption following cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure and the Biden Administration and congressional response to this change in security paradigm. The experts define ZTA in practical terms, frankly assess implementation hurdles in the private sector - including early adopter vs. laggard industries - and give actionable advice for private business and policy makers.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/deepstateradio. Do we see a very dim light at the end of the tunnel for voting rights?
Former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows' text messages from January 6th were released by the January 6th commission and their contents revealed members of Congress and Fox News hosts begging Meadows to get Trump to make a statement. In the courts, Judge Dabney Friedrich ruled that Jan. 6 cases invoking the law against corruptly obstructing an official proceeding has been properly invoked. This opens to the door to bringing criminal charges against Meadows and potential Donald Trump. Is this a turning point? Will the January 6th insurrectionists finally be brought to justice? Could Members of Congress who aided them be ejected from the Chamber? David Rothkopf discusses these latest developments with Norm Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute and Allison Gill of the Daily Beans and Mueller, She Wrote.Last in the episode, the panel discusses the recent news that the Senate may be setting aside the Build Back Better legislation in favor of focusing on voting rights. Will Democrats eliminate the filibuster to protect voting rights? To find out the answers to these and other pressing questions join us!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/deepstateradio.
