Averil Mansfield's career was in vascular surgery. A consultant surgeon at St Mary's Hospital in London, in 1993 she became the first female professor of surgery in the United Kingdom. In addition to her clinical practice, teaching and research, she has been a role model for women in surgery, establishing Women in Surgical Training (WIST).
