Another Mother Runner
Sarah Bowen Shea
A family of two podcasts to get (+ keep) you running without losing your family, friends, job, or sanity! More than 1,000 (!) back episodes to enjoy.
Every Friday on the original show (launched in 2011), host Sarah Bowen Shea, a mom of three and veteran of 14 marathons, is joined by a rotating cast of co-hosts and often a guest expert to discuss topics ranging from how to reach a big race goal to finding your athletic happy place, and everything in between. Training, nutrition, motivation, mental toughness, TMI issues: This ~hour-long show covers it all (and then some!).
Every Tuesday, Miles of Books drops, alternating Ellison Weist chatting fiction one week with Sarah Bowen Shea and non-fiction with Coach Liz Waterstraat and Sarah the next. In about 30 minutes, the hosts entice and entertain you with plot descriptions and pearls of training (and life!) advice to guide you to your next great reads.
Both shows are witty and conversational, making them great running partners because the AMR gals do all the talking—even on the uphills!

#207: Go, Go, ElliptiGO: Runners Who Use an ElliptiGO
Sarah and co-host Ellison Weist talk to two mother runners who mix things up by training on an ElliptiGO, the bike/elliptical hybrid popularized by Olympic marathon Meb Keflezighi. First up is Sarah Brown, a top American middle-distance runner who is gunning for this summer’s Olypmic Trials in 1500 meters—and who just gave birth to her first baby in early March. This Sarah talks about how she continued a high level of training thanks to the an ElliptiGO, allowing her to “add volume without impact.” Proof pro athletes are just like us, Sarah B. overshares about burp clothes in her life with an infant. Then Sarah and Ellison chat with Diane Peterson, a 62-year-young mother runner who uses an ElliptiGO to train for half-marathons. Proof they work? Diane knocks out half-marathons times below 1:45! #205: Find Your Finish Line
Sarah and co-host Coach Christine Hinton welcome three mother runners poised to run the Boston Marathon on April 18. (Yet, as she reveals, the BRF does not let her showcase her “puffy-paint talents!”) Learn how Nicole morphed from an unsporty 20-something into a Boston-qualifier in her 40s (taking on her first marathon in Europe along the way!). Sprinkled throughout the show are Voice Memos from other mother runners on finding their own finish lines. Powerful stuff! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#203: First Ladies of Running with Amby Burfoot
Sarah and co-host Ellison Weist are delighted to be joined by long-time Runner’s World editor and author Amby Burfoot to talk about his new book, First Ladies of Running, which profiles 22 groundbreaking women runners. First Amby shares his running story, including remembrances of winning the 1968 Boston Marathon at the age of 21 (!!). Amby and Ellison bond over having androgynous names, then he muses on why Kathrine Switzer is mistakenly thought to be the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon. He talks about the risk for new runners to do too much, too soon, offering the reminder, “big progress in running comes from slow, incremental steps.” When he utters the sentence, “running is constantly about beginning again,” Amby earns a mother runner stripe. He continues showing his empathy for women runners when he talks about the ways in which running fosters independence and builds strength. Having run the majority of the 1994 Marine Corps Marathon mere steps behind Oprah, Amby shares several intriguing... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#201: Best-of Another Mother Runner Podcast, Part 2
There have been so many anecdotes shared, advice imparted, and laughter snorted over the last 100 episodes of AMR podcast, Sarah and Dimity had to do two best-of shows. In this episode, a plus-size runner tells how she is crusading to take ownership of the word “fat.” Olympian Suzy Favor Hamilton shares how her mania and depression lead her down “a very dangerous path,” and leads by example to banish the stigma of mental illness. Coach Christine gives great advice on how to clip those frustrating final seconds (or minutes) off a time goal, while time-management coach Jill Farmer tells why there really isn’t one “right time” to take on a challenge. The show ends with a standout tale from each mother runner. No wonder this episode is one of the longest ones ever! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#200: 200th Episode Best-of Another Mother Runner Podcast, Part 1
Like crossing the finish line of a marathon, Sarah and Dimity have reached an important milestone - 200 episodes of the Another Mother Runner podcast!! This episode is the first of two shows with highlights from the past 99 shows, with the mother runners commenting on the clips. Some are laugh-out-loud funny, like Nicole Blades recounting her “joggity-jogger-jog” conversation with her doctor, while others are more inspiring, like Olympian Deena Kastor describing how she “unlocked a well of energy” in her world-record Masters half-marathon race. One mother runner’s details of the start of last year’s Boston Marathon is sure to make you snort! Speaking of Boston, one snippet is Sarah talking about digging deep during her most recent BQ marathon. All excellent stuff! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#199: A Lively Conversation with Running Apparel Expert Leigh-Anne Zavalick
Sarah and her running partner, Molly Williams, welcome Leigh-Anne Zavalick, the gal at Saucony (our fav running brand!) in charge of women’s apparel. Due to technical difficulties, Molly is only on for the intro, but it’s a lively one about quarters found on recent runs. Then Sarah dives into grilling Leigh-Anne about everything from layering to reflective technology, as well as the surging popularity of capris. Leigh-Anne opines about how running apparel has changed as women switch from wearing it for an hour a day to all day. A lover of TMI on par with Sarah, Leigh-Anne talks about why and when to have a “no-panty party.” The guest, a first-time mom-to-be, says why a sports bra is, “a piece of equipment, not a piece of apparel,” and explains the shelf-life of your over-the-shoulder boulder-holder. After listening, we suspect you, too, will start using the word “lifestyle” as an adjective or perhaps work the word “athleisure” into casual conversation. Learn more about your ad choices. #198: Becca Pizzi - 7 Marathons, 7 Continents, 7 Days (Yowza!)
Eating desserts, ugly crying, and popping on planes: All these topics—and more—are covered in a rip-roaring chat Sarah and Adrienne Martini have with Becca Pizzi, the single mother who recently became the first American woman to run seven marathons on seven continents (that’s all of ’em!) in seven days. Becca shares all the dirty details, including what one of the hardest parts of the undertaking was (the answer will surprise you!) and how she ensured the proverbial chute was empty before each race. She tells of her year of training, which included running 70 to 100 miles per week, yoga, strength training, and CrossFit, that enabled her to complete the 183.4-mile, “unbelievable test of endurance and strength.” Becca shares how she borrowed wisdom from quarterback Tom Brady and how one flight attendant went way above the call of duty after Becca suffered an injury in the penultimate marathon of the quest. Finally, find out how a pink burka enters the narrative! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On both podcasts, Sarah and her co-hort talk with three “everyday” mother runners who qualified for the Olympic Marathon Trials and will be running them: On this episode, it’s Sarah Robinson, Heather McWhirter, and Andrea Duke. These three mother runners share their tales of qualifying and getting to the starting line, including Andrea’s amusing tale of how, 14 years ago, she was “a social marathoner eating Cheez-Its from a bowl held out by a kid at Mile 10.” Now her PR is 2:41, and she’s gunning for her “golden ticket” to Rio!
