Understanding AI-Facilitated Biological Weapon Development
Audio versions of blogs and papers from BlueDot courses. This report breaks down the categorisation of LLMs and BDTs into more specific subcategories of AI-enabled biological tools at each stage of the risk chain, from ideation to production of biological weapons. By being more specific about the existing and potential tools at each stage, we can have more precise discussions about the risks.Original text:https://www.longtermresilience.org/post/report-launch-examining-risks-at-the-intersection-of-ai-and-bioAuthor(s): Cassidy Nelson and Sophie RoseA podcast by BlueDot Impact.

High-Risk Human-Caused Pathogen Exposure Events From 1975-2016
Audio versions of the blog posts and papers from BlueDot courses. This table documents the known human-caused pathogen exposure events from 1975-2016, both accidental and deliberate, from peaceful research and bioweapons programmes. Using this data, we can start to build an idea of the base rate of these events to begin to inform how likely we might expect human-caused pandemics to be in the future.Original text: https://f1000research.com/articles/10-752Author(s): David Manheim and Gregory LewisA podcast by BlueDot Impact.

Emerging COVID-19 Success Story: Vietnam's Commitment to Containment
Audio versions of blogs and papers from BlueDot courses.Despite sharing a land border with China, Vietnam mounted one of the strongest early responses to COVID-19, reporting only 35 deaths by December 31, 2020, compared to 90,000 in the UK. This article highlights Vietnam's swift and proactive actions to detect and contain infections early in the pandemic. Key strategies included immediate border closures, extensive contact tracing, centralised quarantine, and clear, consistent government communication.Original text:https://ourworldindata.org/covid-exemplar-vietnamAuthor(s):Todd Pollack, Guy Thwaites, Maia Rabaa et al.A podcast by BlueDot Impact.

Towards a Theory of Pandemic-Proof PPE
Audio versions of blogs and papers from BlueDot courses."Vital workers must be protected against viral threats so that critical functions of society can continue during a global pandemic. Globally, COVID-19 revealed weaknesses in the PPE enterprise including production and distribution limitations, counterfeit and poor-quality products, and inadequate stockpiles. End users struggled with design limitations that often reduced the level of protection they were afforded and made completing their work more difficult. Moreover, requirements for PPE that could protect against a future pandemic involving a feasible, worst-case pathogen were under-characterized. This study strives to identify strategies to improve the PPE ecosystem to prepare the world for the next pandemic by ensuring that vital workers have the PPE they need to perform their jobs safely."Original text: https://blueprintbiosecurity.org/u/2024/05/Towards-a-Theory-of-Pandemic-Proof-PPE-Blueprint.pdfAuthor(s): Blueprint Biosecurity and Gryphon ScientificA podcast by BlueDot Impact.

We Aren't Prepared for the Next Pandemic
Audio versions of blogs and papers from BlueDot courses. It will probably start with a cluster of unusual symptoms. Some of the people with the disease will know each other, but won’t have been exposed to animals, suggesting the infection can spread between people. Then more cases will start appearing in other areas, maybe even in other countries. The next pandemic could take many forms, but a respiratory infection remains high on the list of probabilities. It could be a new flu virus, or a new coronavirus, or perhaps something else. It might emerge from a market, or a mink farm, or from another source. It may be years away, or months away – or it could be spreading now, yet to be detected.People often talk about ‘pandemic preparedness’, but increasingly I think this is an unhelpful term. Only in hindsight can we sort events into ‘pandemics’ or ‘outbreaks’ or ‘isolated cases’. In real-time, all these paths begin with a cluster of infections. So if we want to curb pandemics, we need to think about what the response to a small new outbreak will look like.Original text: https://kucharski.substack.com/p/we-arent-prepared-for-the-next-pandemicAuthor(s): Adam KucharskiA podcast by BlueDot Impact.
