Designing our futures: The 2023 RSA Student Design Awards
The 2023 SDA keynote address will be delivered by UNEP Champion of the Earth and design disruptor, Dr Leyla Acaroglu. In her SDA keynote address, Dr Acaroglu will look at design ethics, systems change, circularity and designing a positive future that works better for all of us.As designers, she says, we have immense influence on society — we help to design the future through the things we do and don’t create every day. This offers infinite potential and equally infinite impacts that we must contend with. With such rapid technological and cultural change, how can design create the cultural conditions that facilitate positive change, address some of the biggest issues of our day and level up our role in shifting the status quo?Following the address, RSA CEO Andy Haldane and RSA Director of Design Joanna Choukeir will present the 2023 awards, sharing an overview of each winning project, and inviting the people behind these inspiring ideas on stage to receive their awards. The RSA Student Design Awards is a global open innovation competition that's been running since 1924. We challenge students and recent graduates to tackle pressing social, environmental and economic issues and propose creative solutions that can shift the system and shape the future.#RSADesignforLifeBecome an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/ueembDonate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNBFollow RSA Events on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thersaorg/Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/theRSAorgLike RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theRSAorg/Listen to RSA Events podcasts: https://bit.ly/35EyQYUJoin our Fellowship: https://www.thersa.org/fellowship/join

What would a fair society look like?
The world stands at a cross-roads, in urgent need of a compelling vision that can renew faith in democratic and liberal ideals, and galvanize collection action towards a better future for all.For economist and philosopher Daniel Chandler, the ideas we need right now are to be found in the work of one of the giants of 20th-century philosophy, John Rawls. In Rawls, he argues, we have an unparalleled, as yet untapped intellectual resource, and the basis for a genuinely transformative progressive politics that matches up to the scale of our social, economic and ecological challenges.Rawls offers us a map and compass for the journey to a future where democracy and economy are reinvigorated, prosperity is widely shared within the limits of our finite planet, and everyone has the chance to fulfil their potential.Join Daniel Chandler at the RSA to explore how we might make this ‘realistic utopia’ possible, and the steps we need to take to land there.#RSAdemocracy Become an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/ueembDonate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNBFollow RSA Events on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thersaorg/Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/theRSAorgLike RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theRSAorg/Listen to RSA Events podcasts: https://bit.ly/35EyQYUJoin our Fellowship: https://www.thersa.org/fellowship/join

The changing face of 21st century education and learning
“Education is the root of all the more specific crises such as climate change, governance breakdowns, impending war and social unrest.” - Zachary Stein, writer, educator, futuristThe 2022 Times Education Commission set out to examine the entire UK education system and consider its future in the light of the Covid-19 crisis, declining social mobility, new technology and a shifting skills landscape.Andy Haldane is joined by Commission Chair Rachel Sylvester; Lord Blunkett and Lord Baker to discuss the case for a radical re-think in addressing the acute educational needs of the 21st century.A system shift in education and learning is required to bring about fundamental change – a re-imagining of existing models to develop practical interventions which meet the needs of educators, businesses, learners and society as a whole. This event has been made possible through the partnership and vision of the Comino Foundation as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of their founding by the inventor, engineer and designer Dimitri Comino. The RSA’s collaboration with the Foundation dates back to the Comino Foundation Fellowship established in 1979; since 2014, the two organisations have partnered on the Pupil Design Awards, an annual social design challenge for secondary school pupils.RSA event in partnership with the Comino Foundation#RSAComino Become an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/ueemb Donate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNB Follow RSA Events on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thersaorg/ Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/theRSAorg Like RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theRSAorg/ Listen to RSA Events podcasts: https://bit.ly/35EyQYU Join our Fellowship: https://www.thersa.org/fellowship/join

Prosperity in a post-global world
Rana Foroohar, associate editor at the FT and one of the world's leading economic commentators, argues that path to prosperity, sustainability and equity lies in a local, place-based economics fit for the 21st century. The journalist Joseph Stiglitz has acclaimed for being 'consistently right about globalisation', argues that with the pandemic exposing the vulnerability of global trade and supply chains; tensions building between the China and the west; and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we are beginning to see the first signs of a move toward de-globalisation. The risks of our interdependency are becoming ever clearer, and with increasing inequality, wage stagnation, and the effects of climate change, many are beginning to question the ideological hegemony that places global profit over local prosperity. Can we rescue the best of global interconnectedness and exchange whilst re-focussing on the local and regional? And can we avoid the worst of protectionism and nostalgia whilst pursuing home interests? Join us for this special conversation about a post-global economic future.#RSAprosperityBecome an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/udI9xDonate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNBFollow RSA Events on Instagram: https://instagram.com/rsa_events/Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RSAEventsLike RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rsaeventsofficialJoin our Fellowship: https://www.thersa.org/fellowship/join

Regenerative learning: making the shift
The dominant global educational system was designed to meet the needs of the Industrial Age - an age of mass production and consumption which has brought us to today's multifaceted ecological, economic and social tipping points. There is now growing awareness that we need to learn a new way of living and working in harmony with each other, as well as the natural world - and that needs to start at the earliest stages of education, and continue across the life-course.Fortunately, we don't need to reinvent the wheel - there are beacons of light across the educational establishment that signal other ways of learning - imaginative and learner-led experiential and holistic systems that can help us towards developing truly regenerative cultures and economies, rooted in the care and nurture of both people and planet.Join Satish Kumar, a guiding spirit of internationally respected ecological and educational movements for change for over 50 years, and a panel of innovative educators at the RSA to discover powerful new ways in which we can begin to make real progress, through education, towards a more resilient, rebalanced and regenerative world for all.#RSAregenerativeBecome an RSA Events sponsor: https://utm.guru/udI9xDonate to The RSA: https://utm.guru/udNNBFollow RSA Events on Instagram: https://instagram.com/rsa_events/Follow the RSA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RSAEventsLike RSA Events on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rsaeventsofficialJoin our Fellowship: https://www.thersa.org/fellowship/join
