S8E2 - Erik Severinghaus: How Do You Navigate The Abyss?
“Something in the order of 70-80% of companies fail, and they don’t fail because the entrepreneurs are weak, or because they just don’t give up--as the advice suggests. It’s actually a far more complicated phenomenon than that. But we reduce it into this idea that you just keep fighting through the abyss and you’ll get there. And so, this oftentimes ends in tragedy in a lot of ways for entrepreneurs...So what’s crazy is, we take people who, as a population are predisposed to these sorts of challenges. We then push them into some of the hardest and most lonely professional situations imaginable. We give them very little support. And ultimately our advice to them as a society is reduced to, ‘just keep fighting harder. And as long as you’re strong enough (i.e. as long as you’re not weak) you’ll make it and become successful.”Erik Severinghaus, serial entrepreneur, angel investor, and Chief Strategy Officer of SpringCM, joins us.Full show notes available at www.discoveryourinnerawesome.com. S8E1 - Matt Wilson: How Do You Build A Sustainable Life?
“I just started going down this rabbit hole of self-discovery because I knew the person that I was at that time was not who I wanted to be. I was not connected with the things that I love, which are the outdoors, being in nature, doing action sports and activities, being physical with my body. It was literally being hunched over my computer all the time, with these devices resting on my genitals...As I started to (change things), eventually I figured out things business-wise a little bit better where I was then able to make investments in my own health. Now I feel like any investment I can make, I am making as early and often as possible to make up for all of the years that I put myself through hell.”Full show notes available at www.discoveryourinnerawesome.com.Our Season 8 theme song is from Sidewalk Chalk, entitled "Take The Time", from their new album An Orchid Is Born. S7E12 - Avriel Epps: How Does Identity Impact Experience? (Season 7 Finale)
"When I got signed to my first record deal...I remember I was making really experimental pop music. I wanted to make things that were what we associate with alt-R&B today, but it was 2006 or 2007 and that wasn't a trend in music yet. And I remember all the label executives telling me I should go in the direction of Alicia Keys. And the only reason I could justify that in my head was I'm light-skinned, I've got curly hair, and I sing and play the piano. So it's like they see me in this specific lane or role I should be in. And then it got really blatant when they were telling me to do features on rap artists and I wasn't even doing any kind of urban music at the time. It was like I'm black so they were putting me in this urban box and telling me I have to follow this specific pathway to success that they think works."Avriel Epps--aka King avriel--Founder of SeekU and critically-acclaimed alt-R&B artist, joins us in our season finale.Full show notes available at www.discoveryourinnerawesome.com. S7E10 - Jeffrey Shaw: How Do You Conquer Stage Fright?
"I don’t know that I trained myself to not be an introvert, or I grew out of it. But there are parts of being on center-stage that actually are really good being an introvert. And I think in today’s world that the natural characteristics of being an introvert are actually to our favor. I think we’re naturally empathic, we’re very good listeners. There’s something very lonely about being the only person on stage, even though you might be in front of an audience of thousands, there’s something very lonely and singular about being on stage and somehow that’s oddly comfortable, being an introvert."Jeffrey Shaw, Speaker, Business Coach, Photographer, and host of Creative Warrios Podcast, joins us.Full show notes available at www.discoveryourinnerawesome.com. S7E9 - Samira Far: What Is Our Relationship With Time?
"Somehow along my journey I had attributed working slowly to being unworthy in some way. Like I'm not doing enough, or I'm not good enough if I'm working slow...then I had a breakthrough...if I'm in a relationship with time, let's say I'm dating it, I have a very hostile relationship with it. Either I'm trying to control it, or it's trying to attack me."Samira Far, Serial Entrepreneur and Inc.com contributor, joins us.Full show notes available at www.discoveryourinnerawesome.com. S7E5 - Dr. Patrick J. Murphy: How Do You Improve Your Learning Curve?
“It is human nature to an extent to look for stability. It truly is. That’s how we function in communities and families, and that’s a large part of how we grow. But there needs to be an ELEMENT of discomfort, an ELEMENT of unanswered questions about the world at all times in our lives if we really want to keep learning and growing. For entrepreneurs in particular that’s really important. The power of unanswered questions to coordinate, and motivate, and stimulate activity. It’s important for leaders to continually really remind the people working in their organizations to keep that spirit alive. As a professor I’m constantly posing questions to students. It’s a great way to engage the mind. I find that when you give a lot of answers to people the mind shuts down, but when you give questions the mind tends to wake up.”Entrepreneurship Professor and Author Dr. Patrick Murphy Joins us.Full show notes available at www.discoveryourinnerawesome.com.
