Trump delivered a major economic speech yesterday, in which he advocated for all the policies that created inflation, fake wealth, and the K-shaped economy to begin with. He wants endless near-zero interest rates and more juicing of the housing and stock-market bubbles. Also, everything he is doing is executive actions with no plan to codify them in Congress. Next, I explain how Bibi Netanyahu is pushing for a phaseout of aid to his country, while Trump shockingly opposes it. Our main discussion today is about letting the housing bubble deflate on its own. We’re joined by Melody Wright, a mortgage finance and housing policy expert, who explains how prices are already coming down. There will be a crash, but on balance, that is a good thing. The problem is that everything the government is doing will lead to price increases. Trump is also misdiagnosing the problem as one of interest rates and supply. In fact, developers have overbuilt in most parts of the country. Trump and Republicans are joining Democrats in governing as “aristo-populists.” In today’s action-packed show, I analyze Trump’s housing plan, desire to cap credit card rates, and spat with Jerome Powell over near-zero interest rates through the prism of aristo-populism vs. free-market populism. Aristo-populism is the antithesis of principled governance in that you are swayed by the monied interests at the top of the food chain of policy, sell political access, and then get swayed by perceived public opinion at the bottom to overcorrect. Whereas free-market populism — being for the people — means driving down the middle without any favorable treatment of any one class or industry. I explain exactly how the housing policy fits into the duplicitous dynamic of the arsonist as the firefighter. Also, Trump continues to endorse only candidates who will support data centers rather than those who will actually fight the elites. We have good news and bad news to share. In good news, RFK Jr.’s change to the vaccination schedule is the most transformational medical change we have seen in recent years. While I agree with reversing this odious trend, we must not forget that it is a mere symptom of the broader problem of high prices created by government debt, Federal Reserve policies, and HUD policies. Trump is treating the symptom while supporting all the governmental policies that caused high prices.
