The Crown Affair’s founder Dianna Cohen on disrupting the industry and the importance of good hair routine.
Dianna Cohen, the founder of one of my favorite haircare brands, Crown Affair, started the company after a Google doc detailing her hair care ritual became a sensation. Not only was it helpful, it became communal, with friends, and friends of friends, chiming in and telling their hair rituals. It became obvious there was something missing in the market, a brand that told stories, rather than promoting what someone’s hair should look like. Once she took a deep dive, she was horrified at her findings, and spent two years developing Crown Affair, launching with very high-quality products at a fraction of the usual market price. This episode is important for a few reasons, the first being this girl has worked at some of the best, most disruptive companies of our time. We discuss breaking into the job world, what it’s like to consult for other brands, the importance of social media, and she talk a shit ton about hair. And I’m going to go on record here and tell you, the hair oil is one of the single best products I have ever used in my lifetime, and I’m a greaseball that doesn’t use hair oil. How Judy Can Save Your Life with the Iconic Simon Huck
Simon Huck grew up in Canada with a dream to do PR and manage celebrities, and boy did he ever. After interning, hustling, couch surfing and more, he eventually began working closely with some of the biggest names in the world, including Kim Kardashian. His career took a detour a couple years ago, when he and a friend were talking about the lack of informative, easy, and charming disaster preparedness kits, leading to the birth of Judy. Over 60% of Americans have no emergency plan, and Judy wants to change that statistic. In this episode we discuss Simon’s career, genesis of the Judy, and what it's like to disrupt an industry you know nothing about. Personally, I’m a huge fan - the kits are not only aesthetically pleasing, the contents are hand picked by preparedness specialists, easily identifiable and easy to use. More importantly, they make what is usually very unsexy, yet life changing information charming, oddly fun, and easily digestible. It’s a wildly informational episode. Also, don’t forget to stick around to the end of the episode, where Davide and I answer some of your relationship questions. Follow @simonhuck and @readysetjudy for more. The Changing Lives of Youth in Foster Care with Zaid Gayle
Zaid Gayle is the co-founder of Peace4Kids, a non-profit, volunteer supported organization based on trust, equity and stability for children in foster care. I found out about the program from Instagram, after asking my audience how I can get involved in the foster care community. I was sent their profile by the hundreds, and quickly realized this was a uniquely special place. Peace4Kids listens, rather than teaches. They use volunteers, so the kids have an adult who has chosen them, rather than gets paid to be there. They work on building trusting relationships within their community of peers and adults who have experienced similar traumas, so they can reduce the likelihood of being re-traumatized, especially by adults who are not equipped to deal with the extreme behaviors and actions of a child who does not trust. The youth learn to take ownership of their history which empowers them to determine its impact on their lives. Incredible programs, wildly successful individuals and even legislation has come out of this program. Please go follow @peace4kids on Instagram, considering donating and share this podcast - there is a lot of valuable information in here about empathy, systemic racism and the important role listening plays in changing lives. www.functionofbeauty.com/BEST for 20% off your first order!!! The iconic Kristen Crawley of KNC Beauty
Kristen Noel Crawley is an icon. She’s is a jewelry designer, gallery owner, and founder of KNC beauty, (you know, those charming lip and under eye masks you see on every human on Instagram) and now runs the KNC School of Beauty which provides the information necessary for people to start their own businesses. Kristen grew up in Chicago, and eventually made her way to Los Angeles with her husband and two young boys. Her fascination with beauty products and willingness to share her finds, lead her to become an Elle magazine contributing beauty editor. After coming across lip masks on a trip to Tokyo, she realized the masks tasted horrible and were filled with toxins. Fast forward, KNC Beauty was born. We talk beauty (duh), the importance of networking, her journey, why she started the school of beauty and a lot of other funny shit you don’t want to miss. Beautiful Skin from within with The Beauty Chef
Carla Oates created The Beauty Chef in 2009 after healing her family’s skin issues and discovering that beautiful, glowing skin begins with a healthy gut. After 10 years of working as a fashion stylist, Carla became a beauty writer, during which time she quickly realized the products she was writing about were full of synthetic substances and toxins. So, she began writing about healthier, natural alternatives made from plants and organic foods, which eventually lead to her first book, Feeding Your Skin. Years later, when her daughter began to experience eczema and allergies, she put her family on a gut-healing protocol that included probiotic-rich, lacto-fermented wholefoods. The difference in her daughter’s allergies was incredible, and her whole family quickly experienced improved wellbeing along with vibrant, glowing skin. She began experimenting with lacto-fermenting skin-loving superfoods in her Bondi kitchen and that’s how GLOW—The Beauty Chef’s first inner beauty powder—was created. The pioneer of the inner beauty category, The Beauty Chef now has a large range of bio-fermented, probiotic-rich wholefood supplements and topical skincare products, as well as two cookbooks – all of which I absolutely die for. We talk about the gut skin and brain connection, and how she now works on her unique formulas with a team of leading microbiologists, naturopaths and nutritionists, employing cutting-edge research to develop products that support gut health and glowing skin. We also have a special guest this week, my momma, so stay tuned to the end of the episode, where we answer your relationship questions. And don’t forget to check out @thebeautychef on Instagram. Creating an opportunity for civil discourse with The Flip Side
In July 2016, Annafi Wahed left her corporate job in NYC to campaign for Democratic party candidates in New Hampshire. Walking door to door, she saw firsthand how even next-door neighbors could be completely isolated from one another by the news they consume. In the months following the election, as talk of "fake news" and filter bubbles became commonplace, Annafi set out to create a shared news source in a world of a billion news feeds. Fast forward, The Flip Side was born, a free website, Instagram and daily email subscription service that provides your daily digest of the best op-eds and analyses from liberal and conservative media. Everyday, you wake up, open your email, and there is a fact checked, detail oriented breakdown of current events as viewed by the left, and the right. It’s brilliant. Annafi’s op-eds have been published in The Wall Street Journal, The Hill, and USA Today. Her public appearances include everything from Fox & Friends and The Young Turks to academic panels and podcasts. This is truly one of the most wonderful political conversations I’ve had in a long time. Annafi is painfully intelligent, wildly informed and extremely graceful. Here’s to hoping this inspires more dialogue and civil discourse without trying to kill each. Check out her newsletter, The Flip Side, here.
