Ben Feldman is the Owner, GM, and Head Coach of the Minnesota Wind Chill - a team he's cleated up for in 5 different seasons. Ben has been a fixture of Minnesota Ultimate Frisbee for 20+ years. He was a high school standout at Hopkins before winning a U-19 Gold Medal with Team USA. He's a two time college champion with the Wisconsin Hodags. He also played in 10 USAU Club Championships with Madison Club and Sub Zero. Feldman has always been an entrepreneur. He owned and operated Next Level Ultimate Camps from 2009 to 2016 before becoming part owner of the Wind Chill with his business partner, Omar Ansari, in 2017. This episode was recorded on June 11th. Calvin Brown is one of the best young throwers in the game. He helped lead Cal Poly SLO to a Finals appearance at College Nationals after taking down the 3 time defending champs, North Carolina Darkside in semifinals. Down 12-8, SLOCORE went on a 7-1 run to win 15-13 in large part because of Calvin's ability to throw through the wind and rain, and a clutch block at 13-13. BMO also had two amazing throwers of their own in Leo Gordon and Jacques Nissen. Calvin gives us some insight on the difference of style in SLO and Brown. BMO is more known for shorter, dominator movement while SLOCORE is more aggressive in the deep game. We think you'll learn a lot about what Championship teams focus on the most to stay on top. It starts with culture and loving hard work. It also takes a little bit of luck. As we talked it became clear that luck is often the manifestation of a ton of preparation, and Pleiades is more prepared than any other team in the country. Certainly more prepared than any team we've been involved with. We were blown away to learn that neither Alli nor Kooski started playing until they got to UNC, because they speak about the game like 15 year club veterans. You can only learn that much that fast through hard work and dedication, but they credit a lot of their rapid development to the culture of Pleiades and Coach Jessi Jones. Before we talked to Alli and Kooski, Quinn gave us some updates on Team USA and Windmill Windup and how it felt to play his first Summit game of the year. We're on the road again in Madison and Minnesota this weekend, but Matty, Kins, and Mike recap last week's Oakland/Salt Lake City road trip. It's a gauntlet of a trip. The Spiders and Shred are two of the most physical teams in the league. The team had some ups and downs, bonded, and came home with a win. We talk about the challenges of a double header weekend in the UFA, and the impact we can have on our team negatively and positively with our body language and eye contact. Having fun is often a choice, but not always an easy one. Thomas Edmonds also joins us to talk National Team, learning new systems, and share stories. We recorded his segment about 10 days ago. As we release this episode, he and Quinn are competing with USA Men's National Team at Windmill Windup. Edmonds is a dual Canadian and American citizen and chose to play with the American team. He has been a well known player for many years for Pittsburgh Temper. In 2023 he joined DC Truckstop and DC Breeze and had an enormous impact for both teams. We're also launching our recurring segment with BE Ultimate a little more officially this week. Thomas goes over a few pull plays that DC Breeze runs, and gives us some insight on what he looks for. Abby grew up playing in Seattle and has been dominating at every single level of the game from youth to college to club. After winning the Callahan with Washington Element in 2023, Abby moved cross country to New York where she now stars for New York BENT. This fall she will be representing the US while playing for the National Team at WUC. Abby is no stranger to international play, having played for the U24 and U20 National Teams as well.
