Larissa Nolan: Lockdowns, Life and the Left

Winner of the Popular Journalist of the Year Award, Larissa Nolan is a brave, highly intelligent, at-times controversial, and incredibly hardworking writer. Not only does Larissa hold very strong opinions on big issues like cancel culture, the left-right divide, Ireland’s notorious covid lockdowns (all of which we discuss in this episode) and much more – but, crucially, her opinions are based on long and deep research into these issues, they are not just designed to create heat and get twitter talking. This is a conversation I really enjoyed, and think you will too. Also on this episode we introduce a new member of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast – a spoken word poet called Spoken Word Steve who speaks truth to power and addresses the big issues and injustices of our time with creativity and passion. His debut performance will hit you like a tonne of bricks. Make sure to drop me a line at mariorosenstock@gmail.com if you have any stories, comments, guest suggestions, anything at all, get in touch! Thanks, as ever, for listening in and supporting the podcast with subscribes, follows, rates, and reviews. MarioProduced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand | www.audiobrand.ie Hosted on Acast. Mark O’Halloran: Cinema Success; Property Failure

Mark O’Halloran is a big deal in the Arts world. He wrote and starred in the award-winning film, Adam and Paul; he wrote Garage, the film starring Pat Shortt which debuted at the Cannes film festival; he wrote the hit TV series Prosperity, and he is currently writing the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s ‘Conversations with Friends’.  Mark has worked many times with the great film director Lenny Abrahamson,  he is an acclaimed stage actor, and it is fair to say that in the arts and creative world, he would be called a huge success. BUT would you believe that for all of this hard work and achievement and success in one world, Mark is a total failure (by his own admission)  in another world – the world of property ownership. Like so many others, Mark cannot get approved for a mortgage and is facing a lifetime of insecure renting. In our chat, Mark talks incredibly eloquently about this issue, his career, behind the scene stories from film sets, and so much more. Comedy:  Speaking about the housing crisis, a certain famous Irish businessman has spotted an opportunity to come up with a solution for it, and to make a little bit of a profit at the same time… Drop me a line any time – mariorosenstock@gmail.com Produced by Patrick Haughey, Audiobrand | www.audiobrand.ie  Hosted on Acast. Bressie and I go out of our Minds

Bressie hates mortgage adverts on TV. Having been approved for, and then denied, a mortgage, he knows how unrealistic they are. That a man so industrious and successful would find it really hard to secure a loan from the bank to buy a home says a lot about the state of things right now. So, Bressie shared his story about the mortgage, and we got in to areas that you might expect, like mindfulness and podcasting, but also some areas that you might not expect, like the psychology of colonialism, our shared love of dolly parton, and why I should get some therapy!!Comedy: The Olympics Is kicking off this week, everyone’s talking about it, including some of my friends and colleagues here in the podcast world. Eamon Dunphy's The Stand and Vogue and Joanne's My Therapist Ghosted Me give their take.Enjoy! MarioProduced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand | www.audiobrand.ie Hosted on Acast. Jim Sheridan - Behind the Scenes

He once held a gun to Daniel Day Lewis’ head, spent time ‘f”*king up’ Richard Harris on the set of The Field, and he can’t understand why everyone was so afraid of Harvey Weinstein. Jim Sheridan is not only one of the greatest film directors every to come out of Ireland (six-time Oscar-nominated), he also one of the most compelling characters Ive ever met. In his latest project, Murder at the Cottage, Jim sets out to try to make sense of what really happened in the case of Sophie Toscan du Plantier who was murdered at her holiday cottage in Schull, West Cork in 1996. Jim tells me about the personal tragedy and anger at the Irish justice system that drove him to make this show, and he also shares incredible stories of working with some of the world’s best actors and producers. Comedy: Some well-known people get wind that a famous film director is on the episode and they leave some voicemails for him. Also, a sideways glance ai English Hooliganism, following the Euro 2021 final at Wembley. Enjoy!Mariomariorosenstock@gmail.comProduced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand | www.audiobrand.ie  Hosted on Acast. Ray D'Arcy: Den and Now

After lots of twiddling of knobs and flicking of faders, myself and Ray D'Arcy finally got chatting. But that little bit of technical checking that you will hear at the very start of this episode is a mark of the man in many ways. Ray D'Arcy is a perfectionist, he’s incredibly thorough and a true professional - and these traits, along with obviously being a great communicator and conversationalist, are all central to him becoming one of Ireland’s best known and most successful broadcasters. Ray D'Arcy doesn’t do many interviews at all so this is a very rare outing– as he says himself, he gets very self-conscious when he’s in the spotlight, but despite this, Ray opened up to me during this interview and we ended up chatting about loads of stuff that you may not have heard Ray talk about before. Comedy: You would be forgiven for thinking that apart from Covid-related news, the only other show in town at the moment is the English football team in the Euros. All the debate about supporting them, not supporting them, football coming home, and so on to infinity. But things really did get interesting during their semi final game with Denmark, when that penalty non-penalty was awarded, leading them to win the game, and all my podcast colleagues have been talking about it…As ever, please subscribe, follow, rate and review if you’re enjoying the podcast so far. Livin’ with Lucy Kennedy

Lucy Kennedy is in such high demand that my conversation with her was ‘gate-crashed’ by several well-known personalities including Enda Kenny, Leo Varadkar, Ivan Yates, David Norris, Christy Dignam, and Miriam O’Callaghan. And as you’d expect from what you might know of Lucy from her very popular TV Show, she was great fun, very open and honest, and just so chilled out, not only with those ‘callers’, but all the way through my chat with her. She has has some great goss about some of the people she has lived with for her TV show Livin' with Lucy, get in there and have a listen! And in brand new and exclusive comedy: The big news story this week has been the further delay to the reopening of indoor dining, leading to widespread disappointment among those of us who are dying to get back in for pints and meals inside our favourite restaurants and pubs. But not everyone is so excited about these establishments reopening their doors…I hope you enjoy this episode!MarioProduced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand | www.audiobrand.ie Hosted on Acast. Doing Bangers & Yolks with Neven Maguire

Have you always wanted to hear Neven Maguire giving President Michael D Higgins a cookery lesson while listening to techno? Well your wait is finally over. Neven is one of Ireland’s top chefs -  he’s also such a laugh, and an incredibly driven and hardworking businessman. We chat all about his ambition, love of cooking, tough times during The Troubles, and why he refused the offer to do Operation Transformation. He also gets a few callers into the show – Daniel O’Donnell, Miriam O’Callaghan and Dr Eva Orsmond all have some questions for him. And he gets filleted by Roy Keane. And as well as great interviews like the one you’re about to hear with Neven Maguire, you also get a brand new and exclusive comedy sketch every week here on the Mario Rosenstock Podcast.  All the talk lately has been about the big dark cloud possibly looming on the horizon – the dreaded Delta variant. And my podcast colleagues – Vogue Williams and Joanne McNally, Blindboy, and Nicola Tallant, each have a unique take on it. Enjoy!MarioProduced by Patrick Haughey – AudioBrand | www.audiobrand.ie Hosted on Acast. It’s Al Foran! And Joe Rogan, Robert de Niro, Mark Wahlberg, Kim Kardashian….

Al Foran not only does great impressions, he does great impressions of people that many other impressionists don’t do – lots of well-known American celebrities, black actors and comedians like Denzel Washington and Eddie Murphy (something that he has come in for perhaps unfair criticism for, and we talk about this in the interview), and he’s particularly good at doing boxers. You’ll hear Mike Tyson, Conor McGregor, and Tyson Furey making an appearance throughout the course of this episode – you’ll also hear stories about when Al met them all in person, and how they reacted to him.  We also had some callers into the podcast - Health Minister Stephen Donnelly phones in to ask Joe Pesci for some advice about the HSE, Neven Maguire wanted to talk to Gordon Ramsey about kitchen advice, and Roy Keane phones in to chat with Rio Ferdinand about The Euros.  EXCLUSIVE COMEDY: Have you seen some of the gambling adverts on our TVs at the moment? There’s no holding back in them – full on, in your face promotion of betting. I bet you haven’t heard the latest one I’ve just come across – press play and you will. Enjoy!Mario  Hosted on Acast. 1 Mario + 2 Johnnies

When the 2 Johnnies decided to pay a visit to Dublin I made sure to nab them for a chat on the podcast. These lads are not only intelligent, entertaining, and hard working - with a chart-topping podcast, sell-out shows, and best-selling books to their name - they’re also very sharp businessmen. Spotify has been paying close attention to their ever-growing popularity and, just a couple of weeks ago, the tech giant came knocking and made the lads an offer they couldn’t refuse to make their podcast a Spotify exclusive.  In our chat, they tell me all about that deal, but we also chat about loads of other stuff, like Irish men’s Tinder disasters, Tony Holohan’s wagging finger, and people getting offended at everything on social media. And in this week’s brand new and exclusive comedy sketch, it’s time to pay a visit to the men’s shed - a little hut in the back of George hooks garden where a few of the lads who’ve fallen out of favour with what they would call the ‘woke brigade’, hang out and shoot the breeze. And this week, they have a special caller/visitor… As ever I’d love to hear from you – mariorosenstock@gmail.com – or on Twitter and Facebook.  Enjoy the episode, I certainly did! Mario Produced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand | www.audiobrand.ie Hosted on Acast.
