The nation fell in love with the fairy-tale story of a horse and a jockey that seemingly couldn't be beaten.  As the wins kept increasing, so did the pressure. Everyone wanted to see the streak continue, Hugh shouldering the incredible weight of a nation every time the two moved in to the starting gates.  This is Hugh’s story; From his first pony called Thumbelina, to dreams of a racing career, to mountains of hard work, to pressure that is hard to fathom, and eventually to a place in Australian sporting history. In his 7th full time season in the category, he has hordes of devoted fans who love his aggressive nature on the track and approachable nature off it. This bloke is the real deal with trophies galore to prove it.  But for all his wins, it’s actually a loss in 2017 that has truly shaped Scott’s career and the man himself. #TheHowieGames | This week’s episode is the perfect example of all the good stuff in life. Going out on a limb, having a crack and defying the odds. It features a fantastic fellow by the name of Phil Anderson.  Phil is a trailblazer in Australian cycling. The first non-European to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France, victories in some of the biggest classics in the caper, a couple of Commonwealth Games gold medals and so much more.  But the real joy in this episode for me is Phil’s ability to tell some incredible stories, about a time when sport wasn’t so professionally packaged, monitored and scientific. Phil’s was a wonderfully outrageous time of pre-race steaks, mid-race Coca Colas, no helmets, a lot of risk, long distance phone calls and fluoro!  Real last man standing stuff. #TheHowieGames | Sam Willoughby is a multiple world champion and Olympic silver medallist in the sport of BMX.  3 years ago Sam had an accident on his bike, where he tragically suffered a spinal injury that ended his career and changed his life forever. What Sam has achieved since that crash, surpasses anything he did on his bike.  In this episode, which was recorded in front of a live audience (a first for the Howie Games), Sam talks about life as a BMX star, his accident and how he has physically and mentally recovered from such a terrible event. Sam is joined in this episode by his wife Alise, also an Olympic Silver medallist. He was part of 5, including being the flag bearer at the Sydney games Throw in a couple of NBL championships, an NBA crown (which he has differing views on), 7 NBL MVPs and he sits very comfortably in the Australian basketball hall of fame, Sport Australia hall of fame, and the FIBA hall of fame. But, equal to all that, Andrew Gaze is one of the nicest men in Australian sport. He always has time for everyone and as you are about to hear, has a wicked sense of humour. There’s not much this episode doesn’t cover - Joe’s basketball journey from Adelaide, to Tel Aviv and then eventually Utah. From being without a job, to with Renae’s help and backing, becoming an NBA gun on an enormous contract. Plus we cover Renae’s netball career - from heartbreak to jubilation. But the most beautiful part of this story revolves around Joe and Renae’s twins, Jacob and Milla. In the last year, Jacob was diagnosed with autism.
