Ep 105 Interview Sessions with L. David Marquet

In 2017 I read a book which really inspired me as I was leading on a project to transform the culture of an emergency contact centre. That book was written by today's guest, retired Captain L. David Marquet. It was called Turn the Ship Around! a true story of turning followers into leaders. Simon Sinek described David as the kind of leader who only comes around once in a generation. Student of leadership and organisational design, former nuclear submarine Commander, and named one of the Top 100 Leadership Speakers by Inc. Magazine. David is the Author of the Amazon #1 Best Seller: Turn the Ship Around!, and The Turn the Ship Around Workbook. David’s recently released book, Leadership is Language, is a Wall Street Journal Bestseller. David imagines a workplace where everyone engages and contributes their full intellectual capacity, a place where people are healthier and happier  because they have more control over their work–a place where everyone is a leader. In this episode you will hear: 05:00 a confession - I like being in control but here’s how to practice relinquishing control 08:30 it’s difficult to organise humans without hierarchy - the problem is HOW we use hierarchy 10:25 Turning the Santa Fe Around! an incredible story of turning followers into leaders 16:00 the legacy of creating leaders not followers 18:45 what would it sound like if… we lived the 7 habits of highly effective people by Stephen R. Get to the GEMBA

As a leader, your role is to serve your people. To be able to do that the best you can, you need to get to the GEMBA - the actual place where the work is happening, where your people are operating, where the processes and problems are taking place. A better understanding will help you make better decisions and take better actions to help your people be more effective at serving your customers and community.  Always love Ryan x
