Ep 143 Interview Sessions with Pedro Andrade [Unknown Amazon on Vice TV]
On episode 143 I am joined by New York based Brazilian journalist and host, Pedro Andrade. After leaving Rio 20 years ago, Pedro’s career has taken him all around the world. In his latest six-part documentary, he returns to his home country and explores the Amazon.
‘Unknown Amazon’ is a sobering six-part documentary series following Pedro, as he ventures into unknown corners of the Amazon basin, a region vital to our planet’s biodiversity, meeting groups of people and cultures who share first-hand accounts of the environmental destruction they have witnessed to their regions and the issues they face as a result of climate change.
I love how Pedro seeks to humanise the stories of the people who live in the Amazon as well as posing some solutions to the issues of deforestation, gold mining, palm oil and soy farming, animal trafficking and overtourism.
In the episode you will hear:
04:00 leaving Rio and travelling the world
06:15 returning to Brazil and the Amazon
07:30 if the Amazon was a country, it would be the sixth largest country in the world
08:00 humanising headlines
10:15 what really is happening in the Amazon
12:30 what happens in the Amazon will have consequences globally
13:00 giving a megaphone to Amazonian communities
15:00 as resourceful as the Amazon is, the most important resource is the people
23:30 finding hope
25:45 falling in love with the people of the Amazon and connecting with their voice
28:30 travel is more than going from A to B
I hope this conversation inspires you to find out more about what’s really going on in the Amazon and the things we can do to help.
Always love
Ryan
