SBG 114: Twilight with K-Ming Chang
Greetings to all creatures of the night, sparkly sentient marble statues, and supernatural dogs. If Twilight is your Roman Empire, you’re in the right place. The gay gods give their most challenging tasks to their strongest sapphics. Do you know how hard it is for a gaggle of lesbians to analyze Twilight for an hour and a half and not talk about K-Stew? We are fully committed to continuing to stand in solidarity with the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and for this reason we will be chatting about the books alone and leaving the movies for another time, loca. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with K-Ming Chang (@kmingchang), vampire ethnographer and author of Bestiary, Gods of Want and recently released fantasy novel Organ Meats, to talk about why the Twilight book series Should’ve Been Gay. We dive into everything from the inherent queerness of forbidden romance to Alice’s futch haircut and Bella’s love affair with her rusty red truck. Whether you stand with Team Edward, Team Jacob(ina), Team Alice, or choose to go the enemies to lovers route with Rosalie, we have you covered. If you’re like Leigh and somehow managed to avoid everything Twilight, here is a super speedy breakdown of what you need to know. The story revolves around Bella, a flannel-wearing, car-obsessed queer teenager who moves to the Pacific Northwest and immediately falls for Edward, a guy who is basically like if one of those marble statues in Florence could talk. We do not talk enough about the “I’m not like other girls” to “Oh, I’m a lesbian” pipeline, but Bella fits right into this category. She is portrayed as quirky, not caring about makeup or clothes, getting along best with boys over girls, and being a complete enigma to Edward (who can read everyone else’s thoughts but hers). Bella’s best friend is Jacob(ina). Back in the day girls everywhere were freaking out and fighting with their besties over who was the better pick for Bella between cold, mysterious vampire Edward and playful, warmblooded wolfboy Jacob. But listener, there were other options all along! Edward belongs to a chosen family called the Cullens and his ‘sister’ Alice loves Bella instantly due to seeing her in a vision. She then takes it upon herself to watch over Bella, keeping her safe and dressing her up like her own personal Barbie doll. She even plans Bella’s birthday party and wedding! In an alternate universe, this would surely play out like a romcom where Alice finally confesses her feelings on the day of the wedding and Bella realizes that she was actually in love with Alice the entire time. While Alice has an immediate bond with Bella, Edward’s other ‘sister’ Rosalie, does not. In fact, Rosalie goes out of her way to be as cold as possible to Bella for quite a long time, resentful and jealous of her ability to potentially have a normal life and a family of her own. But if we approach this through a queer lens, it can very easily turn into an enemies to lovers relationship, with Rosalie warming up to Bella little by little. We know one thing for sure, Twilight Should’ve Been Gay. 706: Love Lines with LP
Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that isn’t broken, it’s golden. This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with multi-platinum singer-songwriter, LP (@iamlpofficial), to discuss their brand new album Love Lines and highly anticipated North American Tour. For those who have not yet had a chance to listen to LP’s 7th studio album, Leigh describes the songs as shiny and having a ‘brightness’ to them. This tracks with LP’s own statement of the album feeling like a kind of rebirth, working with a new team to create introspective songs that get really honest about LP’s life experiences. There is an ease to the sound reminiscent of mellow days spent kicking back in a nice California hotel and taking stock of your life.We talk with LP about their songwriting process (a process that is wildly fast- in the time it took you to read this sentence, LP has probably written another song). We also discuss what it is like to be a musician while being visibly “the biggest dyke alive”. We chat about the challenges (and pros) of tour bus life, the horrors of being in a public relationship and going through a breakup, the unfortunate ageism plaguing the music industry (yet somehow doing absolutely nothing to hinder the careers of old white male musicians), and how LP managed to beat Warner Brothers at their own game by bringing their songs over to an indie label and becoming more successful than ever.Check out LP’s Love Lines wherever you like to listen to music and watch them perform all your favorite songs live on tour: https://www.iamlp.com/tour.Follow us on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. 705: The Gay Card with Matison Card
How many punches do you have on your gay card? This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Matison Card (@matisoncard), a lesbian singer-songwriter, actor, and reality tv contestant on Coming Out For Love, the first US lesbian dating show. Although the show just became available for streaming this summer, it was actually recorded 2 years ago. So what has fan favorite Matison been up to since then?We dive into what Matison has been doing since filming wrapped (spoiler alert: there’s a UHaul and karaoke involved!). We also talk about what it was really like behind the scenes of a queer reality dating show, what Matison learned about relationships from the experience, and where dating shows go wrong when it comes to casting and creating potential matches. It turns out you cannot just throw a bunch of sapphics in a room and expect them to bang, even if they are all astrology gays. We explore the best friends to lovers pipeline, the lesser talked about lesbian relationship benefits (being the same shoe size as your partner is severely underrated), and the bizarreness of trying to match whole adults with people whose frontal lobes have not even fully developed yet.For those of you who have not yet seen Nicole Conn’s Coming Out For Love, you can check out the whole first season and get into all the juicy gay drama here. SBG 113: Spring Breakers
If you’ve always wanted to watch the poly lesbian cinematic lovechild of 8 Mile and Thelma and Louise, have we got a movie for you. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to discuss why 2012 deep cut, Spring Breakers, Should’ve Been Gay. If you haven’t seen A24’s artsy crime thriller, just imagine MTV’s Spring Break and Girls Gone Wild on acid and then add Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and the most hideous version of James Franco you can picture. Then layer a much younger Selena’s wide-eyed innocent voice talking to her grandma about having a spiritual awakening in St. Pete’s and wanting to start a lesbian commune with her besties over a montage of slow motion boobs and butts. The plot for this movie is thin at best. Four besties in college want to escape their super lame town and decide it is absolutely critical that they go for the full Girls Gone Wild Spring Break. But oh no, they haven’t got any money! Don’t worry, they’ll just hold up a diner with water guns full of vodka to get the money. Somehow that works with zero repercussions and is honestly the smallest crime the girls will get involved with throughout the movie. When they get to St. Pete’s, it’s just babes and boobs and butts everywhere. They’re all constantly touching one another and never wear more than a bikini again for the rest of the movie. You may think you have experienced the male gaze before, but this movie is truly on another level.Things take a turn when the girls end up getting arrested at a party and are sprung by Alien, ie. creepy James Franco. Selena Gomez’s character, Faith, is immediately not on board and full on bounces from the trip. She signed up for a Spring Break full of lesbianism, not entertaining some dude. Vanessa and Ashley’s characters Candy and Brit have absolutely no qualms about using this pathetic man for access to guns, drugs, and cash. They are so clearly dating (even during the threesome with Alien they only have eyes for each other) that they could literally be a lez-ssential couple if the movie itself was not so chaotic and so, so uncomfortably male gazey. We really wanted this to go full Thelma and Louise at the end, and to be fair it sort of does. Brit and Candy egg Alien into taking on his rival and get him killed in the process, leaving them free to take all of his stuff and drive off in his fancy car (after gunning down like at least 50 men while clad in nothing but bikinis and somehow not getting shot themselves). We know one thing for sure, Spring Breakers Should’ve Been Gay. Follow us on the platform formerly known as Twitter: (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. You can also join us on Facebook.com/lezhangoutpod and Instagram (@lezhangoutpod). Find us individually on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok at Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida). 704: Lez-ssentials I Can’t Think Straight
The podcast discusses the 2008 romantic drama 'I Can't Think Straight', highlighting its diverse QPOC representation. They talk about the chemistry between the main characters and the impact of the movie on LGBTQ+ individuals. The hosts also explore the concept of consent and predatory behavior among lesbians. Despite its flaws, they appreciate the significance of a movie featuring queer people of color leads in a film industry lacking similar representation.

SBG 112: Good Ol' Toys with Connor Clary
From Cock Ring Ken and his buddy™️ Allan to the fabulous rainbow manes of the genderless Troll dolls, queerness is woven throughout the shiny plastics of all our most iconic childhood toys. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with TikTok and Instagram influencer Connor Clary (@connor.clary) to chat about all of the gayest toys from our childhoods. Whether you were aware of your queerness as a child or not, it’s likely that you interacted with your toys in ways that would have literally everyone highkey questioning your sexuality nowadays. And regardless of what your orientation is now, if you owned Barbies, you were absolutely scissoring them together any chance you got. Honestly that’s on Mattel for making Barbies so damn good at scissoring! But it is not just how we played with our toys that makes them scream homosexual. It’s truly just that the toys themselves are giving gay. Barbie was queer from the jump, arriving on the toy scene with one agenda in mind, to shake up the status quo for little girls. From their lack of genitals to their impressive scissoring skills, it’s a real wonder that anyone ever thought they were straight! Then of course there is Barbie’s beloved beard, Ken. There have been a lot of iterations of Ken, but there are perhaps none more gay than Earring Magic Ken and Sugar Daddy Ken. In fact, Earring Magic Ken (lovingly known as Cock Ring Ken by gay men everywhere) was so visibly queer that Dan Savage published an article about him titled Ken Comes Out, sending Mattel into a panic and causing them to discontinue the doll. Beyond Barbie, several other childhood favorites made our gayest toy lists including Bop It! (literally a handjob training machine), The Game of Life (you can put two little pink figures into the front of the car, no one is going to stop you), the Furby (essentially what the Babadook would keep as a pet), and Troll dolls (genderless slightly unsettling very naked rainbow creatures). We also bust out some deep cuts, looking into the inherent queerness of Pogs and Slap Bracelets (if you remember these, go take an Advil for your back). We know one thing for sure, our childhood toys Should’ve Been Gay. SBG 111: t.A.T.u.
PSA: LHO will be taking a bit of a different direction with our SBGs this season in support of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. While this means you will be hearing a bit less about movies and TV shows for a while, don’t fret, because we can make anything gay.—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Gays of a certain age, prepare yourselves for a wave of very chaotic nostalgia. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to chat about the early 2000s Russian music duo, t.A.T.u. This band rose to fame by making their entire identity revolve around their supposed lesbianism. The ‘All The Things She Said’ music video still lives rent free in the minds of so many queer people, including one Leigh Holmes Foster. It was groundbreaking at the time, debuting in 2002 and featuring the singers wearing schoolgirl outfits while making out with one another in the rain. With very little other queer content available (this was pre-Youtube days!), the music video was not initially considered exploitative but instead was a drop of fresh water in the desert of dehydrated baby gays. For those who are less familiar with the iconic but problematic Europop stars, t.A.T.u. consisted of two teenage girls, Lena Katina and Julia Volkova. It was created by the creepiest creeper to ever creep, Ivan Shapovalov. He had already decided on the lesbian angle for the band before even auditioning girls for it. The band name itself is an acronym meaning ‘this girl loves that girl’. When Ivan books Lena and Julia, they are just 14 years old. With them being so young, it is easy to see how their producer managed to exploit them into participating in his gay for pay scheme. Something like this would never work nowadays, because we have so many actually out and proud lesbian singers and bands. But back then, it was pretty much just Melissa Etheridge. So when ‘All The Things She Said’ came onto the scene, the sapphics were overjoyed to belt out the angsty teen lesbian lyrics while staring in awe at two girls kissing on TV.Everything was great and gay for about a year until in 2003 a documentary was released called The Anatomy of t.A.T.u. In this documentary, the girls admit to not actually being gay! This revelation sent queer people spiraling. t.A.T.u. was pretty much the only representation teen lesbians had at the time, and they were not even real! We’ve seen some intense queerbaiting before but nothing even comes close to this.We know one thing for sure, literally anyone involved with t.A.T.u. Should’ve Been Gay. Follow us on the platform formerly known as Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. You can also join us on Facebook.com/lezhangoutpod and Instagram (@lezhangoutpod). Find us individually on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok at Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida). 703: Vixen Match with Ivy Les Vixens
Come for the thirst traps, stay for the (f)em(me)powerment. This week Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with Ivy (@eveleena), the founder and producer of Les Vixens Burlesque (@lesvixensburlesque) and host of Tea & Glitter: The Podcast. For those who are not in the know, the Les Vixens are the largest and longest running all-queer Burlesque troupe in the world! As if running the Les Vixens wasn’t impressive enough, Ivy also produces and directs the largest and longest-running LGBTQ+ women’s weekly lesbian event in the U.S., GIRL the Party (@girltheparty). Ivy uses her platform as an entrepreneur and performer for mental health and queer advocacy, community connection, and humanitarian efforts, all while she continues to prance and dance her heart out, leaving a trail of sequins and glitter wherever she goes.We chatted with Ivy about femme invisibility in the queer community, reclaiming femininity from the grubby paws of the patriarchy, performing for the female ga(y)ze, and spreading mental health awareness via therapeutic thirst traps. With an all-queer Burlesque troupe, consent and agency are prioritized in a way that just does not happen very often in straight spaces. This not only provides safety for the performers, but also gives permission to the queer women in the audience to look at the performers without fear of falling into that predatory lesbian stereotype. These performances are BY the all-queer Vixens FOR a queer audience. Sure, a cishet male can go see a show, but he should not expect to get the same treatment as the sapphics in the audience.Don’t forget to follow us on the platform formerly known as Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. You can also join us on Facebook.com/lezhangoutpod and follow on Instagram (@lezhangoutpod). Find us individually on Instagram, X, and TikTok at Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida). SBG 110: Coraline
ICYMI, Lez Hang Out will be taking a bit of a different direction with our Should’ve Been Gays this season in support of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. While this means you will be hearing a bit less about movies and TV shows for a while, don’t fret, because we can make absolutely anything gay.—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Since September is essentially Halloween Eve, let’s get spooky in here! This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about Neil Gaiman’s Coraline, a dark fantasy children’s novel published in 2002 and later adapted into a film by the same name. You may be more familiar with the movie than the book, but trust us- the book is somehow even more queer! Coraline herself is an extremely queer-coded child. She is always scheming up some wild adventure. Her only friends are literally a talking cat and her super eccentric queer neighbors (Wybie does not exist in the book which is another reason it is queerer than the film). As Coraline explores more and gets to know her gay neighbors, the portal to the other world opens. When she crawls through everything is nearly the same, but different in the way that it is at least 20x gayer and much more appealing to Coraline than her usual world where her parents don’t have time for her and don’t seem to understand her. In this other world lives The Other Mother, also known as the Beldam (a drag queen name if we’ve ever seen one). Although The Other Mother is a terrifying nightmare monster, there is something very intriguing and appealing about her to all of the gays with mommy issues (so basically all of us). She gives Coraline everything that her own parents wouldn’t as a way to lure her deeper into her trap. Then, the Beldam throws Coraline into a closet that she has to escape from, the door to which is literally a mirror. The queer symbolism is just leaping off the pages at this point. As Coraline discovers more about the other world and about herself as a result, her real parents go missing, hidden away by The Other Mother. This other world has opened Coraline’s mind to so many wondrous and magical possibilities, but at the cost of her family. She has to learn to reconcile the two versions of her world to save her parents, free the souls of the other trapped children, and ultimately stop the Beldam. We know one thing for sure, Coraline Should’ve Been Gay. Follow us on the platform formerly known as Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode.
