Freshwater Plastic Pollution and The Impact of Pollution on Our Freshwater Ecosystems with Sherri A. "Sam" Mason, Ph.D.

Why does so much trash wind up in our waterways? Without proper action much farther upstream than preventing the last stages of littering, changes can be challenging to make. How effective litter booms may be How trash buildups can impact the bacterial microbiome The levels of microplastics present in consumer products. Sherri A. "Sam" Mason, Ph.D., the Director of Sustainability at Penn State Eerie Behrend, shares their work on sustainability and how trash makes its way into the water. Litter has been a problem for much of our recent history, destroying ecosystems and causing irreparable damage in some cases. However, with the rise of plastics and other difficult-to-decompose materials, this issue is only exacerbated. By looking in bodies of water for microplastics, the more significant issue, on the whole, is attempting to determine how these make their way from the store to the waterways. This is a problem for the consumer as well since microplastics that make their way back into us can be incredibly damaging. Visit https://www.sherrimason.com to learn more. Plastic Problems—Bethanie Carney Almroth—University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Associate professor and researcher at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, Bethanie Almroth, joins the show to discuss her research and expertise in ecotoxicology and microplastics pollution. In this episode, you will learn: Roughly how many chemicals are in plastic packaging materials, and under what conditions they could leach out and cause ecotoxicological or adverse human health effects What kinds of plastic materials are being found on beaches and other spaces in the environment in very significant amounts, and what it is about these materials that makes them likely to end up in the environment What are nurdles aka "mermaid tears" and what role do they play in ecotoxicology and environmental health and safety For the past nine years or so, Almroth's work has revolved around microplastics and the effects of plastic pollution on animal and environmental health. She describes her research as having two main tracks: #1 What happens when fish are exposed to microplastics? How do the chemicals in these materials affect their health? #2 Where and how are microplastics released into the environment and how do they travel through food chains? How do we approach the problem of plastic in the environment from a broad, social perspective? Effects of Garbage on the Environment and Ecology of Rivers with Timothy Hoellein

Aquatic ecologist Timothy Hoellein studies the impact of trash on aquatic ecology and biodiversity. He tells listeners How he's attempting to measure the movements of different materials in the flow of rivers, What are the variety of ways materials can invade an aquatic ecosystem, and How these studies have and may continue to influence policy by measuring environmental impacts. Timothy Hoellein is an associate professor of biology at Loyola University in Chicago. In this podcast, he focuses on the impact and ecology of solid waste in our streams and rivers and how these findings may impact waste management policy. He works on measuring the sources, movement, and biological interactions of trash when it enters our waterways. Offer: TRĒ House products are crafted to bring you the best that legal, delivered-to-your-door THC has to offer. TRĒ House utilizes unique blends of carefully selected minor cannabinoids that get you lit in ways you've only ever dreamed of. TRĒ House offers an array of premium, legal THC products including gummies, vapes, prerolls, and more. Head over to trehouse.com and enjoy 30% off your order AND get a free Acapulco Gold HHC preroll when you use coupon code GENIUS. This offer expires August 31, 2023 He explains that not only must aquatic ecologists focus on what's in the water, they also must measure the way trash moves. For example, some materials like metal, construction debris, and fabrics are pretty stable. But lighter materials and buoyant trash can travel pretty far—even as far as the ocean. Finally, many materials can be retained in the rivers and integrated into its ecology. He also explains how litter breaks down in different ways. He adds that aquatic ecologists are less concerned about glass because it's more of an inert material and animals don't try and eat it. Plastic, on the other hand, breaks down over time and can be ingested, which is more concerning. It can harm animals in different ways, including making them feel full when they aren't. Professor Hoellein touches on numerous other topics, from concerns over sewage overflow to methods and tools for measuring and collecting samples. Measuring and Managing Microplastics with Dr. Stephanie Wright

Research Fellow at Imperial College London, Dr. Stephanie Wright, shares the expertise she's gained over the course of nearly a decade researching the biological and environmental impacts of microplastic pollution. Press play to learn: How up to 90% of household synthetic fibers may end up as soil conditioner to agricultural fields By what chemical and physical mechanisms plastics turn into microplastics Approximately how many microplastic particles we are exposed to on a daily basis through diet Where does that plastic soda bottle you're drinking from end up? How does the mere friction produced by your movement release synthetic clothing fibers into the environment, and where do those end up? What are "microplastic sinks" and where are they found? These are just a few of the questions explored by Dr. Wright, who's been fascinated by marine biology since the early days of undergraduate school. Offer: CBDfx products are formulated to boost overall wellness and deliver calm vibes for daytime and nighttime use. CBDfx uses only organically grown hemp and all-natural ingredients. CBDfx is offering our listeners an exclusive 25% OFF plus a free CBD bath bomb with your first purchase, when you use code GENIUS. Don't miss this special 25% OFF offer for Finding Genius listeners only at CBDfx.com. Offer expires August 31st, 2023. Feel the difference with CBDfx! At the time, she was doing lab-based research on the impact of microplastic ingestion by marine worms. The findings showed negative effects, including less feeding and a compromised ability to store energy. What might this suggest about the impact of microplastic pollution in the marine environment and on other species? Her current area of research is on human exposure to and human health effects of airborne microplastic pollution, which she says requires a strong focus on analytical techniques since the particles of interest are on the micron scale. These particles can enter the central airway and lower lung, and part of her research aims to identify evidence of this internal exposure and better understand how microplastics affect human cells of the airway. Are microplastics even toxic, and if so, what exactly makes them toxic? What are some potential microplastics pollution solutions and reduction strategies? Tune in for all the details on these important topics, and learn more at https://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/s.wright19. Available on Apple Podcasts: apple.co/2Os0myK

Anthropogenic Assays and Plastic Problems—Chelsea Rochman

Chelsea Rochman is an assistant professor of ecology at the University of Toronto and scientific advisor to the Ocean Conservancy. In today's episode, she shares important insight from her research on anthropogenic contaminants in the environment and the organisms within it. This offer expires August 31, 2023. Press play to learn: How the environmental impacts of micro and macroplastics differ What are some of the main dominant pathways for waste getting into the environment and how they differ depending on geographical location What type of filtration solution works well for keeping microplastics out of the environment Why it's difficult to understand the role of nanoparticles in the environment Rochman's research revolves around anthropogenic contaminants—what happens when they are added to the environment, how they interact with animals and plants, how they impact species and aquatic ecosystems, where they most frequently enter the environment, and what types of effects different contaminants have on different aspects of the environment. For over ten years, Rochman has focused on plastic contamination. By taking samples from various environmental sources and the guts of organisms, she quantifies and characterizes the plastics found, which allows her to not only conduct further research on how specific contaminants impact organisms, but also propose to industry and municipalities more sustainable ways of utilizing and managing plastics. Much of the research in this field has shown that the smaller the plastic, the more likely it is to have an impact on organisms, and those impacts range from changes in growth patterns to low offspring viability. In addition to discussing these topics in depth, Rochman touches on types of ecotoxicology research, trophic transfer of microplastics, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of microplastics, and the chemistry of the environment.
