20: Two Raw Sisters. Rosa and Margo Flanagan
Two Raw Sisters are Rosa and Margo Flanagan from Christchurch. They specialise in using plant based foods (but they DO cook and use ovens!)Before Rosa Flanagan was a Raw Sister, she was a supremely talented track athlete who had her sights set on the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. This quest for success came at a huge cost to her physical and mental health. This is a podcast episode of two halves. The first half is Rosa's story, from being one of the fastest women in New Zealand to being at her own self described rock bottom. For the second half the other Raw Sister, Margo Flanagan, jumps on the mic and things take a lighter turn. 19: Joseph Parker
I have been lucky enough to interview Joseph maybe 20 times since he first became a professional boxer ten years ago. But this is the first time I have sat down with him for an in-depth conversation. If you are a boxing fan, you’ll love this. But I honestly think this is an enjoyable conversation for all. We cover so much ground here outside of the ring including running, his relationship with Tyson Fury and why he felt depressed after becoming the world champion. Joe is a great guy. Humble, kind, generous and polite...but he could also kill you with one punch if he wanted to!Thanks very much to the sponsors of this episode, The HUAWEI WATCH GT runner. 18: Kerry Suter and Ali Pottinger
WARNING: Unfortunately, this audio is not perfect. Due to the nature of Kerry’s injury, he was unable to get real close to the microphone (Sorry about that- I need better equipment for occasions like this). But I hope you guys can get past these audio issues and still appreciate this story from 2 of life’s most inspiring people.Kerry and Ali are couple goals. They met at a trail running event 8 years ago in a case of love at first site. Since then, they set up their coaching business Squadrun and have helped thousands of runners of all ability achieve things they doubted were possible. On the 26th of February 2022 Kerry Suter went into Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa forest on a mountain bike. He was taken out in a rescue helicopter. This mountain bike ride was to be the final piece of movement for the supremely fit superhuman. I caught up with Kerry and Ali in what has become their home since the accident, a spinal unit in Auckland. This conversation was recorded in May 22, less than 3 months after the accident. Its not an easy listen. We laughed a lot- humor is a big coping mechanism for these legends. We also cried a lot.If you want to be coached by Kerry and Ali, reach them at Squadrun: https://squadrun.co.nz/This episode is sponsored by my mates at Em’s Power Cookies. Bite size: Barry Magee recalls his 1960 Olympic marathon race to a bronze medal.
The 1960 Olympics in Rome have historical significance for New Zealand, then a little known country of just 2 million people. Murray Halberg and Peter Snell both in black singlets won gold medals on the track within an hour of each other. Not long after that their friend and training partner, Barry Magee won a bronze medal in the dark in the marathon. As well as all being Kiwis and friends. All three men were trained by the great coach, Arthur Lydiard (who had to pay his own way over and was not allowed to stay in the village or watch his athletes. In this short podcast recap, 88-year-old Barry gives us a blow by blow of the greatest day of his life with detail so crisp it feels like you are running alongside him.I can’t thank Barry enough for sharing his story with me. And I hope you guys enjoy it.Dom Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

17: Barry Magee (1960 Olympic marathon bronze medalist)
88 year old Barry Magee was, in his own words, only a “decent runner” compared to his training partners in the 1950s. Then again, his training partners were Peter Snell and Sir Murray Halberg. (Barry’s best 5000m time was 13.39 so you be the judge about his talent or lack of!!). The three Arthur Lydiard coached athletes went to the 1960 Olympic games in Rome. Expectation was high for Snell and Hallberg (which they both delivered on, winning gold within an hour of each other). But Barry was not even expected to be anywhere near the podium for the marathon.Due to the heat in Rome, the marathon time was changed to late afternoon meaning it finished in the dark (running on cobblestones with no streetlights). This meant Barry had no idea that he had won the bronze medal when he finished in pitch black in what has gone on to be known as one of the greatest marathons of the century! This is an exhilarating story of a golden era of New Zealand athletics, and it was an absolute honor to sit with Barry and have him reminisce. He still coaches to this day and can often be found at the finish line cheering on his athletes. He is a man who has devoted his life to running. This is a must listen for any history buffs or running nerds.Big thanks to the sponsor of this episode, the incredible HUAWEI WATCH GT runner. With this sexy device, you will have access to more data about your run than Magee, Snell and Halberg ever had!! 15: Eric Murray
This is part one of my very first ever two part podcast. Eric came over and we just yarned for over two hours so I decided to split it in two.
