Given that they’re so far ahead, Liverpool took the weekend off to go and win another trophy in Doha, while Riyad Mahrez came back to haunt Leicester as Brendyball came up short against Man City. Elsewhere, Nigel Pearson’s revitalised Watford were too much for the ghost of Man United. Forget all that though, because Miguel Almiron scored! On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re looking back at an absolutely phenomenal match - one that Jonathan describes as potentially his favourite ever game of football. The Athletic’s Rafa Honigstein joins us to represent the other half of this fixture, as Bayern Munich take on Red Star Belgrade in the second leg of the 1991 European Cup semi-finals.Political instability formed an all-encompassing backdrop to this game, with Slovenia and Croatia both declaring independence unilaterally in the months leading up to this game, and it was built up as a momentous footballing occasion. The 1991 European Cup was a tournament both sides were desperate to win; Bayern were obsessed with winning the European Cup again after 1976, and had suffered some traumatic final defeats in subsequent matches, while the Yugoslavian national side had notoriously lost a range of finals in the latter half of the 20th Century. With a home defeat in the first leg, Bayern were praying for a miracle - as we discover, the game more than lived up to this sizeable billing.Fancy getting in touch? What a week for new managers, as Mikel Arteta takes the reins at Arsenal (probably at the time of recording) and Carlo Ancelotti rocks up at Everton (possibly etc etc). Us again, after another weekend of football. What a game this is. Mikel Arteta may have had a preview of his very own Ghost of Christmas Future, as Man City brushed past apolitical-Arsenal on autopilot. Leicester weren’t “top enough” to keep up with Liverpool, as they were held by Norwich, and Big Dunc Ferguson kept up the good work with a point at Old Trafford, even if poor Moise Kean suffered the indignity of being a sub for a sub. As well as all this we muse on sleepy voiced sat-navs, “loopy behaviour” and wearable Pete Donaldsons. This was the start of a hugely impressive run of form for the U’s, as they went on to gain promotion and reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup - feats they repeated a year later. They built this success on legendary manager John Beck’s genius philosophy of: 1) every marginal gain is a necessity and 2) pump the ball down the channels.
