TTP #95: Dr. Joni Mihura – The Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS)
Would you rather read the transcript? Click here.
The Rorschach has been a source of mystery and debate in our field for decades now. As someone who went through grad school at a time when the Rorschach had fallen out of favor (especially with my advisor), I don’t use it and know very little about it. That’s why I’m so grateful to be talking today with Dr. Joni Mihura, co-author/developer of the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS). The R-PAS has come to be regarded as the most current set of norms and administration guidelines for the Rorschach, and Joni shares a wealth of knowledge not only on the R-PAS but the Rorschach in general. Here are just a few things we talk about:

She is the co-author of the Thurston Cradock Test of Shame, a projective measure aimed at assessing shame in individuals of all ages. Julie talks with me today all about shame: what it is, why it’s important, how it might show up in our assessments, and of course, how her test may help in that process. This interview really opened my eyes to some of the underlying emotions and processes that we might miss in a more “data-driven” assessment. Enjoy!

TTP #90: Dr. Rob McNamara – Decision Making and Capacity Assessment in the Hospital
Would you rather read the transcript? Click here.
I’ve known Dr. Rob McNamara longer than any other psychologist friends. We met a few days before starting grad school together, and he has remained one of my closest friends over all the years since. Rob is here today talking with us all about his role as a hospital-based psychologist, which allows him to conduct capacity evals and evaluate medical decision-making. This is an area of assessment that was largely unfamiliar to me before our podcast. Rob does a great job walking us through the ins and outs of this position. I hope you enjoy this deep dive into a somewhat obscure niche of assessment!

TTP #88: Reflections on Two Conferences – AACN & GPOS
Would you rather read the transcript? Click here.
This has been a busy summer as far as conferences go. I attended the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology’s annual conference in early June and just returned from the Group Practice Owners Summit a few days ago. Both were in Chicago, though they were held in different areas of the city. I thought about going to APA in August for a true Chicago conference trifecta but ultimately decided to go to the beach with my family instead. This episode is all about reflecting on these conferences that were, in many ways, on opposite ends of the learning spectrum for me.

It turns out that Dr. Robin McEvoy and I have a lot in common. We’re both in Colorado, we have some mutual psychologist friends, and we’ve both pursued craniosacral therapy for our children! Wait, what? Yes, craniosacral therapy. Join Robin and I as we talk all about her approach to integrative assessment for kids. We cover her evaluation process, what a “holistic” assessment is, some common influences on behavior that we might overlook, and a number of alternative treatment approaches (including craniosacral therapy). As another guest who has “written the book” on this topic, Robin brings a highly informed, nuanced perspective to assessment with kids.

About Dr. Robin McEvoy
Dr. Robin McEvoy is a developmental neuropsychologist practicing in the Denver, Colorado. She evaluates and diagnoses a wide range of learning disabilities and learning needs in children, adolescents and adults. In addition to her private practice, Dr. McEvoy is an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Although evaluation is the heart of her work, Dr. McEvoy also loves the educational process – speaking to parents, schools or other health professionals about learning, development and parenting in this new age where certain learning and developmental challenges are increasing in prevalence. Over the last 20 years, she has evolved to taking a more integrated approach to evaluation and diagnosis. I try to take a more holistic look at the child’s life. Have we checked sleep, nutrition, exercise, sensory processing, allergies, eczema? What are the multiple factors that may be impacting this child’s life and psychological profile? Although I find the DSM quite useful, I do not focus on converging on a DSM diagnosis. My goal is to paint a picture of this child’s functioning, the factors influencing that functioning, and the recommendations that may shift things where we can. DSM diagnoses, though often necessary, are a secondary component to me. To that end, I have worked with an alternative treatment provider (Kim Gangwish) and an editor (Marijke Jones, who raised a Twice-Exceptional learner) to develop Child Decoded:Unlocking Complex Issues in Your Child’s Learning, Behavior, or Attention. This book aims to help both parents and providers consider the multiple factors that can influence a child’s development and trajectory of outcome. My daughter and I have also published Buddy:A Story for Dyslexia, a children’s book to explain learning challenges and how different teaching approaches can help a child overcome these challenges.
