An essential part of adult life is independence. That's why it's very confusing to our minds that in Christ, growing up is growing into complete and utter dependence on God. As believers growing doesn't make us need God less. In fact as we grow up in Christ, we need our Savior more desperately. What was your relationship like with your mom? Positive? Negative? We talk a lot about God being Our Father… you know, the one in Heaven who has a hallowed name. We humans march along a timeline of life. Birth. Middle. Death. We make plans and measure our progress along the line of life. But what if our timeline of life is a false perspective? What if life is measured not by days, months, or years or even by minutes and hours? What if our entire lifetime is really an existence beyond time? The Bible offers a rich understanding of time, translated through various cultures over what we chart as thousands of years. When ordered to evacuate the Philippines in the early days of World War II, General Douglas MacArthur made a promise to his troops and to the Filipino people, “I shall return.” Some two years later, MacArthur kept that promise by striding back onto Philippine soil as the victorious Supreme Commander of the forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, declaring “I have returned.” Famous returns are as old as history itself. Yet, the most significant of all returns is yet to occur—the return of Jesus Christ to this world. We share our planet with global neighbors. And yet, how many of our neighbors do we really know? In a world of “stranger danger” we tend to pull back from those around us. In Luke 10, Jesus challenges us to love our neighbors as ourselves – and in so doing, to really love Jesus.
