Marks retirement plans were to enjoy the life he & his wife Kirralee were building with their children before a shock diagnosis turned their worlds upside down.Scans revealed an avocado sized tumour on Mark's brain & it was soon confirmed to be cancerous. After riding the rollercoaster of emotions that come with a life threatening diagnosis, Mark decided that he would not be defined by his circumstances but rather how he responded to them.The Mark Hughes Foundation was born from the hope to help others fighting a battle alike his own & to find a cure to stop brain cancer for good. Having raised close to $30,000,000, Mark is well & truly leading from the front. Mark is the brain behind the famous 'Beanies For Brain Cancer' appeal & has had incredible support with a full round of the NRL calendar dedicated to their fundraising & awareness efforts. Diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at birth, the odds were against him from the jump. Throughout his childhood, he felt as though CF rendered him weaker & less able than his peers.
