Customer Experience: Another Option for Instructional Designers with Melissa Milloway
Just because you have an instructional design degree doesn't mean you're limited to only working in training teams. The growing number of Software as a Service companies in recent years has placed Customer Experience teams above the standard training department. You might ask, but how could any department be more important than the training department? It's a long story, but here's the short version: Customer Experience directly impacts the company's bottom line. Internal training is important, but without customers there is no need for employees to be trained. But do not despair. Your ID knowledge and skills are useful and, as it happens, necessary. Onboarding new customers is the new "onboarding". It's different than onboarding new employees however both require learning. In this episode, we have the unique opportunity to talk with one of our own, Mel Milloway, who has decided to make the leap out of training into the world of CX. Mel is a former guest on IDIODC and you all have certainly come to know her through LinkedIn, other social media, and presenting at industry conferences. We'll talk with Mel about the transition and why she's doing it. But we'll also talk about the similarities between internal ID work and CX work. If you're also at a crossroads in your career, then you should join us and open up your options for your next career move. Mel is a Manager of Learning Experience Design at Miro in the space of Customer Education. Ex Amazon, JLL, and J&J. She's an avid blogger in the learning industry. She specializes in UI/UX for learning experiences, as well as working with xAPI. She is passionate about testing out new tech technologies to support learning solutions.Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on Twitter. Better Instructional Design Using Periodic Table of eLearning with Brian Washburn
There was once a day that instructional designers only selected ONE method of content delivery. Those days are long gone. With today's technology there are many, many, more options. As new technologies came along the industry began to call it blended learning solutions. But how do we decide which elements to choose? This is where The Periodic Table of eLearning Elements can help."Brian Washburn offers a simple yet elegant periodic table of learning elements modeled on the original periodic table of chemical properties. Washburn's elements which are organized into solids, liquids, gases, radioactive, and interactive categories similar to their chemical cousins are metaphors for the tools and strategies of the field of learning design; when they're combined, and under certain conditions, they have the potential to create amazing learning experiences for participants. They are that impactful."Join us for a fun and informative conversation around the elements and how we can all apply them to our eLearning designs.Bring your ideas, current projects, work situations, and see if you have a situation that requires a unique combination of elements to create that perfect compound solution.Brian Washburn is the co-founder and CEO of Endurance Learning, a boutique instructional design firm that creates instructor-led and elearning courses with the vision that every training program should be engaging and lead to change. Brian has been preaching the merits of effective, participant-centered training design for two decades and his company recently launched an online tool named Soapbox to help people put together engaging training sessions within minutes.Brian has led training departments in several nonprofit organizations where he has worked on initiatives to improve the foster care system and to cure blindness. He was named a top young trainer by Training magazine in 2011, holds a masters degree in Organizational Development and currently serves as the President-elect of ATD Puget Sound.Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on Twitter. TikTok as Corporate Training Support Platform with Mike Tholfsen
Just when I thought TikTok was ONLY for teenagers and the shuffle dance, I see one of our own corporate L&D colleagues, Mike Tholfsen, CRUSHING IT on TikTok with microlearning tutorials. Who knew? So, of course, I had to invite him on the show to talk about how he does it. And why!Check out this "microtip" for excel: https://www.tiktok.com/@mtholfsen/video/6966327280356379909?lang=en&is_copy_url=0&is_from_webapp=v1&sender_device=pc&sender_web_id=6966263930818627078If you're anything like me, you've probably downloaded TikTok, tried it, then deleted it, and just watched your kids "play" with it. Maybe you've joined them in a dance or 2... ya know, because they asked. But how in the heck could we ever incorporate this crazy little app into our professional, corporate, world of Learning and Development? The pandemic helped answer that question with medical professionals launching accounts and using the platform to explain COVID-19 and all the issues caused by the lockdowns. It's not all just fun and games. But IDIODC is a little about fun and learning, so join us for this super fun conversation with Mike Tholfsen.Mike Tholfsen is a Principal Group Product Manager on the Microsoft Education team focusing on the Immersive Reader, Reading Progress, and OneNote Class Notebooks. The Role of the Online Learning Producer with Kassy LaBorie
Very few instructors can successfully teach online...alone. The last year of lockdowns and mandatory zoom training have exposed this weakness to the world. The best online training courses are co-produced with a super hero behind the curtain: The Producer.Having a producer does not guarantee a great instructional experience. However, it does give you a superior advantage. In this episode, Kassy LaBorie returns to share her experiences and strategies in producing online learning events. We'll talk about why having a producer is so valuable, as well as clarifying the role of the producer. Not everyone is cut out to be a good producer. Successful Strategies for Teleworking Post-pandemic with Tom Spiglanin
As we begin to see a light at the end of the pandemic shutdown tunnel, let's talk about what we learned about working from home. And also what's next. Many companies have made bold moves, like announcing continued teleworking options for employees. But those are general announcements for the entire company. In this episode of IDIODC we wanted to talk with the community specifically about how going back to work effects the work we do and the training departments we work in. Tom Spiglanin, author of "Everyone's Guide to Teleworking", joins us to help us talk through the future ahead. Tom is a friend, and also the only rocket scientist we know working (retired) in training & development. His perspective is unique in many ways, but for our community he has a special connection, and understanding, of the struggles we face as corporate training professionals.Join us. And bring your stories of success and/or failure from the past 12 months and perhaps even share your plans for the future... if you have them. It's a show you don't want to miss. Dr. Thomas Spiglanin has been helping people be more effective in the workplace for more than thirty years. As a teleworker himself, he understands how effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills underpin success in a digital workplace.Working predominantly with technical employees for over thirty years in the aerospace industry, and the last few decades in the training field, he saw first hand the value of being able to communicate complex concepts in ways that others can understand. In much the same way digital technologies enabled distanced business communication, Tom saw a steady decline in the very interpersonal skills needed to be effective using those tools.
