Feeling different can be commonplace among kids and today’s digital age certainly isn’t helping. But, what’s important, is the choice that our kids make to let their differences dictate their lives or take advantage of those differences to find success.
Michele L. Sullivan knows this all too well. Michelle was born with a rare form of dwarfism, and realized that she had three choices to make at an early age:
She could tailor her differences into something more suitable for the world.
She could hide from the world and live on the fringe.
Or, she could embrace her differences, turn them into assets, and come to recognize that there was a strength within them that could help others.
Michele chose to embrace her differences, which led her to become the first female president of the Caterpillar Foundation, a TEDWomen speaker with 1.6 million views and a prominent philanthropist. In her new motivational book, Looking Up: How a Different Perspective Turns Obstacles Into Advantages released on February 25, 2020 (HarperCollins Leadership), she outlines her story and roadmap for kids to turn their differences into strengths. The book has received high praise and endorsements from Sheryl Sandberg, Bono, and Michael Bloomberg.
We've all had moments when we felt like we didn't belong. But for Michele, who was born with a rare form of dwarfism, fitting in was never an option. Michele's acceptance of not filling anyone's shoes but her own led her to become a force to be reckoned with in corporate philanthropy. Standing at just four feet tall, and perpetually looking up, Michele transformed her perceived disability into an advantage—using it as fuel, a source of insight, and a relentless drive that allowed her to establish an extraordinary career. Her passion took her from the Oval Office alongside President Barack Obama to the halls of one the biggest philanthropy powerhouses in the U.S., the Caterpillar Foundation—where she would ultimately become the first female President— to the villages of Uganda where she sought to eradicate poverty.

During the period of isolation and uncertainty, we need strong leaders more than ever—but where can you turn for leadership training, council, and help at this time? You need a Grassroots Leadership Revolution!
Glain Roberts-McCabe, founder and president of the award-winning The Roundtable, has spent decades helping groups of ambitious leaders in organizations come together, raise their game and take control of their careers. In The Grassroots Leadership Revolution, she shares the same methods she uses with clients including PepsiCo Foods Canada, CAA Club Group, the Toronto International Film Festival and others, so that you can create a community of leaders and build a trusted tribe to support you on your journey.
This book has been endorsed by Dan Pontefract, bestselling author of Open to Think and The Purpose Effect, and Marshall Goldsmith, Thinkers 50 #1 Executive Coach and New York Times #1–bestselling author of Triggers, Mojo, and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There.
Some topics Glain highlights in this book, to the current "new normal" include:
- What works and doesn't work when it comes to community building over Zoom: "Happy Hours" aren't enough—community happens when people can be vulnerable and support one another.
- How The Roundtable runs its own virtual leadership coaching teams, and how to do this successfully
- Why people are bringing emotions to work right now—and why that's a good thing
- Forced into virtual meetings, organizations are realizing that they don't have to have people in the same room to develop leaders

Interview with Shelley Paxton
Shelley Paxton spent 26 years as a highly regarded marketing and advertising executive stewarding some of the world’s most iconic brands like Harley-Davidson, Visa, McDonald’s, and AOL. In 2016 she walked away from the corporate world to nurture her soul and discover her purpose. She christened herself Chief Soul Officer and called the journey her Soulbbatical. It did more than change her life, it became her calling.
In 2018, Shelley opened the doors of her own company with the mission to liberate the souls of leaders and organizations, by inspiring them to realize their greatest purpose and potential. Shelley’s intention is to help her clients discover, as she did, a way of being that is aligned with their authentic self (soul) and deeply rooted in a commitment to living and leading courageously. As a certified professional coach, she works with individuals, entrepreneurs, and executives at Fortune 100 companies like Lowe’s, Inc. and Mars, Inc.
Prior to becoming a proud corporate refugee, Shelley was Vice President, Global Marketing + Brand, at Harley-Davidson. She was essentially the Chief Marketing Officer, responsible for leading all brand and marketing activity around the world. In her 6+ year tenure, she led significant growth and transformation with her signature authenticity and courage. And she did it rocking leather, jeans, and boots in the Boardroom.
Shelley has always been a rebel soul with a nomadic spirit. She’s a self-proclaimed Global Citizen having lived in places as diverse as Istanbul, Shanghai, and New York City, and she has traveled to 66 countries and counting, quite a few of them on a motorcycle. (Oh, and she pierced her nose at age 42.)
Shelley holds a marketing degree from Boston College. More recently, true to her soul’s purpose, she graduated from iPEC, one of the premier, ICF-accredited coaching certification programs in the country. She’s a member of 4PC, Rich Litvin’s exclusive community for extraordinary leaders and coaches, and has also been selected to train with Brené Brown on her Dare to Lead work in September 2019.
Some additional fun facts: Shelley is a Second City Improv graduate, total book geek, amateur photographer, and avid supporter of the arts. She most recently sat on the Board of Trustees of the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design as well as the Milwaukee Repertory Theater.

R in Burnout Stands For Rhythm
I’ve been sharing posts lately about the word burnout. We're up to the letter R, which stands for rhythm.
Our lives are about harmony and rhythm and actions and things that we do. When you're burned out, you're out of rhythm. We're not in sync with how you operate through our lives. We learn traits; we build up habits, routines, and a variety of different things. What happens when you're out of rhythm, those things become more problematic or in many cases you skip them. One of the things that I see often in people that are burned out is they skip the things that they enjoy doing because they don't have time.
Yes, you do.

U in Burnout Stands For Unhappy
In the Burnout acronym, the next letter is the letter U. And that is for unhappy. When you're burned out, you're not happy with yourself. You're not happy with life. You're not happy about anything. You may be upset. You may be mad. When I had my burnout, I was distant from life. Things that you used to enjoy, things that brought you fulfillment. No longer does. You’re numb. You don't sleep well. You're not eating well. You're not doing anything well. Life is just overwhelming to you, to the point where even little inconveniences seem like major catastrophes in your life.
