The Empire Club of Canada Presents:  Investment Outlook 2014 featuring Ian Russell, Nick Barisheff and Andre Philippe Hardy lan Russell is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Investment Industry Association of Canada, a position he has held since its inauguration in April 2006. Prior to his appointment at IIAC, Mr. Russell headed the Industry Relations and Representation group of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada. In his 20 year tenure at the Association, he has participated actively in many committees and working groups involved in regulatory and tax issues related to the securities industry and capital markets in Canada. He is a frequent columnist in industry publications and is a presenter and speaker on industry issues and developments. This past June, Mr. Russell was appointed Chariman of the Standing Committee on Regulatory Affairs at the International Council of Securities Associations, ICSA. A Masters Graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, DJ joined Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1994, serving as Policy Assistant to Foreign Ministers Ehud Barak, 1995 to 1996, and David Levy ,1996 to 1998. His first overseas posting was as Press Secretary at Israel’s London Embassy from 1998 to 2002, during which time he was recognized by Diplomat magazine as the most effective Embassy spokesman in London. From 2003 to 2006, Consul General Schneeweiss served as Policy Advisor to Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and from 2006 to 2009 as Israel’s Deputy Ambassador to China. From 2009 until taking up his duties in Canada in August 2012, the Consul General was Director of Civil Society Affairs in Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Bob Rae, Chief Negotiator and Counsel for the Matawa First Nations With Canada and First Nations: Time for a New Partnership Bob Rae works as a mediator and arbitrator in Toronto. He has a particular interest in conflict resolution, first nations and aboriginal issues, and governance in both the public and private sectors. He speaks and consults widely on issue of public policy at home and abroad. Since April 2013, Mr. Rae has been acting as an advisor to the Matawa Tribal Council, and since June 2013, he has been acting as the Chairman of the First Nations Limited Partnership in British Columbia. He is a Senior Distinguished Fellow at the School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Toronto, and is also a Senior Fellow at Massey College. Bob Rae served as Ontario’s 21st Premier from 1990 to 1995, and was elected eleven times to federal and provincial parliaments between 1978 and 2013. From 1982 to 1996 Bob Rae was leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party and from 2011 to 2013, he served as the Interim Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada at a time of significant restructuring. He resigned from the Parliament of Canada on July 31, 2013. In 2011, Mr. Rae was named by his colleagues as Parliamentarian of the Year. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Queen’s Counsel, a Privy Councillor, and a Member of the Order of Ontario. Mr. Rae studied History, Politics and Law at the University of Toronto and Balliol College, Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He has been a practicing lawyer since 1980, and from 1996 to 2006 was a Partner at Goodmans LLP in Toronto. Mr. Rae is the past president and founding Chairman of the Forum of Federations ,where he remains a Fellow, and served as Chairman of the Institute of Research on Public Policy ,IRPP. He was chair of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and has been the Chairman Emeritus of the Royal Conservatory of Music, as well as National Spokesperson of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. He was the Chief Negotiator of the Canadian Red Cross Society in its restructuring, and also served as a member of the Canada Transportation Act Review and the Security and Intelligence Review Committee for Canada. He has served on the boards of a number of public companies and charities. He was Chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University from 2002 to 2007. Mr. Rae’s books ,From Protest to Power, The Three Questions, Canada in the Balance, and Exporting Democracy are published by McClelland and Stewart. As a student, he co authored a report on governance at the University entitled Towards Community in University Government. In 2005 he wrote a provincial report Ontario, a Leader in Learning, and a federal report on the 1985 Air India bombing Lessons to be Learned. He has received numerous honourary degrees and awards from universities, colleges, governments, and organisations in Canada and abroad. He has served as Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation. The Empire Club of Canada Presents: Linda Hasenfratz, CEO, Linamar Corporation With Myths and Realities of the Global Automotive Industry Linda Hasenfratz was named Chief Executive Officer of Linamar Corporation on August 12, 2002. From April 1999 to August 2002 she was President of Linamar Corporation. Ms. Hasenfratz joined Linamar Corporation in July 1990 and embarked on an extensive training program to gain familiarity with all aspects of the business. Positions held in the Corporation range from Machine Operator all the way up to General Manage of the company's Vehcom Manufacturing and Comtech Manufacturing Ltd. Divisions. Ms. Hasenfratz completed an Executive MBA from the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario in June 1997. In addition, Ms. Hasenfratz holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the same institution. He is a husband and father, and former Bay Street banker, labour minister and minister of citizenship. Minister Sousa is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University and received his MBA from the Ivey School of Business. On Thursday, Minister Sousa will rise in the legislature to deliver the government’s fall economic statement. The Empire Club of Canada Presents: Tim Leiweke, President and CEO, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment With Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Tim Leiweke was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, MLSE, on April 26, 2013. Leiweke brings more than 30 years of sports and entertainment experience to MLSE, having been deeply involved in the growth and development of the NHL, NBA and MLS. Leiweke joins MLSE after 17 years with AEG, one of the leading sports and entertainment presenters in the world. In 2013, he ranked fifth on the Sports Business Journal's 50 Most Influential People in Sports Business and eighth on Billboard's 100 Most Powerful Music Industry Executives. The only President and CEO to rank on both lists. The Empire Club of Canada Presents: David Mirvish In Conversation With Christopher Hume On Legacy and the Public Realm: Dreaming with Frank Gehry David Mirvish is a Canadian theatre producer, entrepreneur and art collector. A passionate supporter of the theatre and Canada's artistic community, Mr. Mirvish is the owner and operator of Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre, Princess of Wales Theatre, Ed Mirvish Theatre and Panasonic Theatre. Mr. Mirvish and his father, Ed Mirvish, also purchased and restored the renowned Old Vic Theatre in London, England which they operated from 1983 to 1998. The Toronto facilities were renovated, refurbished and, in the case of the Princess of Wales built by the Mirvish family, providing the city with premiere theatre space where they have mounted outstanding productions such as Les Miserables, The Lion King Horse, The Wizard of Oz and many others. Mirvish Productions, a company founded by Mr. Mirvish in 1986, has produced plays and musicals for these and other venues throughout Canada, on Broadway and in London's West End. In addition Mirvish Productions has presented over 500 touring productions in the city of Toronto. The Mirvish family is widely credited with making Toronto a major centre of theatre. David Mirvish is also the owner and operator of Honest Ed's, the beloved discount emporium and Toronto landmark, which was opened by his father in 1948.  Christopher Hume is the architecture critic and urban issues columnist of the Toronto Star. In 2009, he won a National Newspaper Award, Canada's highest award in print journalism, for his columns. Since the 1980s, when he began working for the Star, he has received five NNA nominations. In 2009, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada gave Hume its President's Award for Architectural Journalism. He has also received a certificate of appreciation from the Ontario Association of Architects. His book, William James' Toronto Views, won a Toronto Heritage Award in 2000 and in 2004 he received a Landscape Ontario communications award. NOW magazine named Hume Toronto's best newspaper columnist in 2005. He hosted and wrote a one hour special about Canadian cities for CBC TV's flagship series, The Nature of Things. He appears frequently on radio and television as a commentator on city issues. Hume was educated at the University of Toronto and Glendon College and lives in Toronto. The Empire Club of Canada Presents: Christie Blatchford, Kevin Donovan and Lisa Taylor In Conversation with Edward Keenan On Beyond the Headlines: Have the Media Treated Mayor Ford Fairly A video that allegedly shows the Mayor of Canada's largest city smoking crack cocaine has generated headlines around the world. News of the video, which was not produced by the journalists, has also raised questions, some of them for the first time in Canada, on the way in which journalists gather and report on people and events. A panel will look beyond the headlines of this watershed moment to discuss the media's treatment of Mayor Ford, who has not acknowledged the allegations, and the broader implications for society.  Christie Blatchford has written for all four Toronto based newspapers. She has won a National Newspaper Award for column writing and in 2008 won the Governor General's Literary Award in non fiction for her book Fifteen Days: Stories of Bravery, Friendship, Life and Death from Inside the New Canadian Army Christie is currently the National Post and Postmedia columnist.  Kevin Donovan is the Investigative Editor at the Toronto Star and a senior reporter. He has won the Michener Award for Public Service Journalism, three National Newspaper Awards and three Canadian Association of Journalists Awards. He is the author of ORNGE: The Star Investigation Broke the Story.  Edward Keenan serves as senior editor and lead columnist at The Grid magazine in Toronto.
