Patrisse Cullors - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #195

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 195 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! All the best to you all, Team 3W and new-term listeners! Welcome x3 to all y’all. A very special episode right here, as Pip is joined by creator and full time spokesperson of the Black Lives Matter movement and, subsequently, one of the busiest women on the planet, Patrisse Cullors! It has been an incredibly busy time for Patrisse, as you will hear, so it’s lucky she’s found the methods to keep herself healthy and stable throughout her more hectic times in doing so much for the Black Lives Matter movement - working for a cause which is so much bigger than one’s self will surely takes its toll… In some ways it’s a shame that she is so busy - to quote her from this episode, “If things were better in this world, I wouldn’t have to work so hard…” It’s a heavy one for sure, as the wider world slowly becomes more aware of the struggles and prejudice faced by black people, brought into a shockingly present focus with the advent of cellphone cameras (and in an earlier recording from the Rodney King beating) and the documentation of police brutality on a grand scale. From her earlier days living in a now gentrified neighbourhood, where the money moves in and the history is kicked to the curb, to her education of the Black Panthers movement and the good they did which rivals the negative image from the media, to the prison system (the movie ‘13th’ is a SOLID viewing for more on this), to the difficulties in getting the movement up and running and of course, the perpetual ignorance of the ‘all lives matter’ statement and why it’s does no favours to anyone, the future of the movement and SO much more besides. Seriously, pure knowledge in this one and essential listening for those eager to learn more about the Black Lives Matter movement as well as those unaware as yet. Listen, learn, repeat if necessary.––––– ––––– –––––This episode's links:• PATRISSE CULLORS on TWITTER!• PATRISSE CULLORS on THE INTERNET!• BLACK LIVES MATTER website• 'WHEN THEY CALL YOU A TERRORIST - A BLACK LIVES MATTER MEMOIR' by PATRISSE CULLORS!• BONUS LINK! Steve McNeil - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #194

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 194 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Or as that deep wizard voiceover used to say in the Gauntlet arcade, “WELCOME BLUE WARRIOR”… What has that got to do with this week’s guest? Everything! For this week Pip is joined by one of the creators of Dave’s ‘Go 8 Bit’ and all round multi-talent Steve McNeil!A great chat with Pip and Steve as they get deep down into the art of the video game, and the specialness of the medium from the vintage to the brand new. As co-creator of the truly excellent ‘Go 8 Bit’, the computer game gameshow on Dave (amongst many more excellent televised and non-televisual goodies), Steve is very well versed in all things pixellated, and as Pip is partial to a good game or two himself, this is a great meeting of minds which gets into the origins of the programme (to quote Steve, “comedians playing video games drunk in a cupboard” - which is a less catchy title than Seinfeld’s ‘Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee I’m sure you’ll agree), the Edinburgh Fringe element of the whole show - the concept of which was a stroke of genius, how the early stages led to so much more, his other projects on the go (including the terrific 'WiFi Wars'), some bizarre and beautiful wi-fi inventions, the grand Dave channel, Twitch and the streaming arts, and just a lovely serving of video game-based goodies. We’ve come a long way since the days of ‘Pong’ but it’s funny how those formative years are still so resonant in the ongoing tale of the video game. Mother's Day Special - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #192

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode one hundred and ninety two of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! As we approach that glorious time of year where we celebrate mothers, those who live with us and those who have moved on, what an ideal time for Pip to have a sit down and chat with his own Mum about her Mum! It’s a veritable Mumapalooza in here (or Mumfest). You might recognise her warm, friendly tones and unmistakable laugh from her appearance on episode 51 of the podcast, where Pip was joined by her and his Dad too, but this time it’s ALL about Mum!You may be familiar with the song ‘Cowboi’ by Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - if not you’ll have a chance to get familar at the end of the podcast as it’s included in its entirety - which involves details of an attack, and as Pip notes on this podcast, is the only track he’s made which is based on a true, personal story. The story itself is based on an experience his Grandmother went through, which is relayed here by Pip’s Mum, and as it turns out, Pip’s Mum has an entire backlog of wild and crazy tales to tell about her (including the attack dealt with in ‘Cowboi’) - a mix of all the moods and emotions, and dealing with everything from the delightful to the plain surreal, all relayed with pride and detail and in most cases, that fantastic smile-inducing laugh which forms a great percentage of this episode. Fancy a sneak peak at the anecdote setlist? Expect to hear about cakes and canoe paddles, horseriding mishaps, yoga, “a little job”, the wedding, Stamford Beach, cowboys and playing dead and one that shan’t be spoiled but let’s just say the topic leaves Pip scratching his head… A wonderful and intimate story telling session which offers that ever so special element that podcasts can really deliver on - the feeling of unobtrusively sitting in on a conversation which involves you directly and offers some fantastic stories from real life that you may not otherwise hear in any other way. Priceless entertainment! And hopefully this might inspire you to crack open a conversation with available family members about your greater family sphere, to see what nuggets you will uncover… There are doubtless many to be enjoyed! Have fun, and take this chance to listen in on some ace memories and maybe have a little run through of your own memories too… We’ve all got some treasure to hold dear.––––– ––––– –––––This episode's links:• PIP'S MUM on INSTAGRAM!• PIP'S MUM on TWITTER!• 'COWBOI' by DAN LE SAC vs SCROOBIUS PIP!• SCROOBUS PIP on TWITTER!• SCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAM!• SPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS • DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOK• DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAM• NEW LISTENERS TAKE NOTE!!! Rutger Bregman - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #190

Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode one hundred and NINETY of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! Ten away from two hundred… I’m sure you could have done the math on that yourselves. Still, that’s huge! And as we approach the big numbers, what better time to approach some big topics with none other than author and historian RUTGER BREGMAN!An absolutely massive episode covering - as said - some big topics and issues, which are immensely interesting and made a lot easier to understand with Rutger’s able guidance and explanation. His book ‘Utopia For Realists And How We Can Get There’ is available now (published by Bloomsbury), and this should be a good idea of what you can expect - Rutger tackles the issues of universal basic income, strikes, borders, how great art can be achieved by not having basic financial worries, how we need a return to utopian thinking, new ideas beginning at the fringes of society, how the US isn’t the beating heart of the entire world (as the news may have you believe), the ‘circle of bullshit’, and how we are working with “21st Century hardware on 19th Century software” - all of these are expounded on a great deal so this is a good one to really sit and take some time with. There is a kind of ‘Freakanomics’ approach to some of the points, which is fascinating - like the eventual financial cost of one element of one’s life, and the knock-on effects of doing one thing in particular and how it leads to what’s down the road. Just so much to enjoy, and all very positive too - certainly not a world of doom and gloom in this one, no way. Vicky McClure - Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip #187

Welcome, welcome, welcome to Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg's favourite episode of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip, episode 187 – a handful of words into the intro and already the rap gawds are being referenced... Whatever the number, this is a grand one right here as Pip is joined by one of the UK's finest, the Bafta winning queen Vicky McClure!Surely you will have seen Vicky's acting greatness on the big and small screen, having a HUGE part to play in the filmography of the legend Shane Meadows in films such as A Room For Romeo Brass, This Is England and the series of which the film spawned (as ‘Lol’), but if not you will most definitely be catching up after this chat with Pip, as she goes all the way into the archives, back to her days in the acting workshop where she honed her craft and improvisational skills (which would be vital in her later roles), Nottingham days, her very realistic and sobering view on her own acting profession which is very refreshing to hear, a TON of fascinating behind the scenes science on the Meadows method and the deep connection between director, cast, and overall end product, and her own collaboration with fashion label Finery. An all round podcast of pure perfection, so set aside some time and enjoy every moment.
