The West Bengal elections are due in 2021. Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress have been in power for about a decade and won the last election convincingly with nearly 45% of the vote share. In that same election, the Left parties led by CPI (M), which ruled the State for nearly 3 decades with Jyoti Basu and Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, followed with about 20%. The BJP, which hasn’t been historically strong in the State has made tremendous progress and even won 40% of the vote share and 18 seats from Bengal in the 2019 general elections. Aside, we have the Indian National Congress, which is another key player in the mix. Plenty of factors in play right now. #017 - Bharatvaarta - Agriculture and Labour Reforms in India | Reforms in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, & Gujarat | Way forward
Agriculture employs about 50% of our country and yet produces about 15% of GDP. Industry, which is often positioned as an alternative to agriculture, employs about 25-30% of the population and produces around the same as percentage of GDP. What is often said is that there’s a huge scope for improvement in both Agriculture and Industry. A major hindrance to this is that our laws are archaic and that it’s easier to just hand out doles than reform things at a more fundamental level. But, in light of Prime Minister Modi’s asking states to undertake fundamental reforms, we have seen a few states step forward and pioneer some massive Agricultural and Labour reforms, both of which could make a significant difference to the progress of people. In this fascinating episode, we are joined by Aashish Chandorkar (Author, Public Policy Commentator), Rajeev Mantri (Investor, Writer), and Vivek Khaitan (Pharma Entrepreneur) to discuss recent Agriculture and Labour reforms announced by the Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh. They discuss the context and impact of these reforms and what more can be done to improve Agriculture and Industry in India. This podcast is available on Anchor fm, Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Pocketcasts, YouTube, and other popular platforms. Listen, subscribe, and share.
