Steve Jones is currently the Senior Vice President of the Steel Sports Coaching System with responsibility for providing Steel coaches with a continuing education pathway while overseeing their unique Professional Development Program. He visits Steel Sports groups across the U.S. and delivers coaching clinics and parent engagement events to Steel’s baseball, softball and soccer coaches and families. Steve grew up in England playing soccer and played semi-professionally in England and Scotland for several years. He obtained a bachelor’s degree In Physical Education from Liverpool University in 1984 and after teaching and coaching for five years, he emigrated to the United States to play and coach soccer in 1989. Previously, Steve spent over 20 years as UK Elite Soccer’s Director of Professional Development. In addition to 30 years of coaching soccer players and coaches from recreational to elite levels, Steve has 20 years of experience working with the Special Olympics of New Jersey in powerlifting and track and field. Podcast 045 – Endure: Exploring the Boundaries of Human Performance with Alex Hutchinson

Alex Hutchinson is an author and journalist in Toronto. His primary focus is the science of endurance and fitness, which he covers for Outside magazine (where he is also a contributing editor and writes the “Sweat Science” column), The Globe and Mail (where he writes the Jockology column), and Canadian Running magazine. Alex has also covered technology for Popular Mechanics, where he earned a National Magazine Award for my energy reporting, and adventure travel for the New York Times, and was a Runner’s World columnist from 2012 to 2017. Alex’s book ENDURE: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance is an exploration of the science (and mysteries) of endurance. Before that, he wrote a practical guide to the science of fitness, called “Which Comes First, Cardio or Weights? Fitness Myths, Training Truths, and Other Surprising Discoveries from the Science of Exercise”, which was published in 2011, as well as the book “Big Ideas: 100 Modern Inventions That Have Transformed Our World”, in 2009. Alex actually started out as a physicist, with a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge then a few years as a postdoctoral researcher with the U.S. National Security Agency, working on quantum computing and nanomechanics. During that time, he competed as a middle- and long-distance runner for the Canadian national team, mostly as a miler but also dabbling in cross-country and even a bit of mountain running. Paul Kolody earned his Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training and his Masters of Science in Physical Education, with a concentration in Exercise Science as well. He is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association, (NATA/ATC), as an Athletic Trainer, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, (NSCA/CSCS), as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach, and USA Weightlifting as a Level One Club Coach. Paul started his career as an Athletic Trainer including serving as the Athletic Trainer and Strength Coach for the Somerset Patriots Baseball Club from 1998 to 2004. In 2003 he helped open Somerset Medical Center’s Sports Performance & Rehab Center, managing that facility and training athletes at the middle school, high school, college and professional level. During his preparation for college baseball where he received multiple All-America honors and set numerous school records, Mike decided that he wanted to enter the world of physical preparation for sport. He began training people part-time while in college, then full-time the day he graduated. From there he had crossed paths with two incredible world renowned coaches that became mentors and life long friends: Buddy Morris – Arizona Cardinals head strength coach and James Smith – world class sport consultant. After working with them, Mike’s whole approach to training and learning had changed. He reconstructed his program and outlook on the training process. Mike went on to be the Director of Sports Performance at a world-renowned facility where he proceeded to train professional, collegiate and high school athletes. From there, Mike started up his own facility – Freak Strength. Mike is currently a Coach, Writer & Owner at Freak Strength and has been coaching for over 10 years.
