Mauricio Flores, a chess grandmaster, author and AI practitioner known for Chess Structures and ChessMindAI. He discusses adult improvement versus prodigies. Topics include study over volume, pawn-structure thinking, building AI-driven training, tactics and board vision practice, and practical ways adults can organize effective study.

This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Lloyd. He runs the Balanced Rook Chess Club in Colorado Springs. We talked extensively about developing a healthier interaction with chess that goes beyond ratings. The Balanced Rook is a social chess club that sees players many ages and ratings having fun in a less anxious environment. We discussed his success as a child playing chess, his retirement, and return to chess. This week on Chess Journeys, I spoke with Nathan. He’s had quite a journey from 1000 to 1996 in four years. Nathan brought a lot of enthusiasm to the conversation and talked about his study approach, playing OTB games, and his journey. Nathan made his biggest gains during summers as a college student. He played 50 OTB games during these summers and gained piles of points. He credited game reviews, examining master games, tactics, and opening preparation for his rating gains at different times in his journey.
