Leaders in Cleantech #123 - Jørgen Erdal - Evyon

What’s it all about? Batteries, smart use of second life batteries. There is of course so much demand for new batteries, and that won’t go away, but soon we have a lot of batteries too useful to recycle just yet, but not useful for electric vehicles of first use cases. Entrepreneur and founder, Jorgon Erdal shares his vision and experience building a business to take advantage of this opportunity, and to play a large and important role in the energy transition. We also delve into his background and the importance of proactively building company culture. About Jørgen Erdal: As the Co-founder & CEO of Evyon, Jørgen is fully devoted to maximizing the value of every Battery, by converting a growing volume of discarded batteries into high-quality battery energy storage systems. With his passion to create a positive impact on the planet, Jørgen and his team at Evyon are in a leading position to reach their ambition of becoming the European leader in reused batteries in 2025. Jørgen is also a Co-founder of Protect Our Winters's branch in Norway, a worldwide NGO working to raise awareness of climate change within the winter sports community. As an ex-BCG consultant specializing in renewable energy strategy, financing, operating models, and more, he supported some of Europe's largest energy companies to succeed in the energy transition. During his time at BCG, Jørgen was also the main driver of the local and regional sustainability activities of BCG as a company. Jørgen holds a Master's Degree of Science in Electrical Energy Engineering from The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and ETH Zürich. Jørgen's master's thesis was to develop a stochastic optimization algorithm for how to operate a residential battery system in order to maximize its value under different tariff structures. About Evyon:  Evyon is a Norwegian Antler portfolio company founded in 2020 by Jørgen Erdal and Radu Achihai. Evyon exists to enable maximum value generation from second-life batteries by repurposing them in a safe, data-driven, and cost-effective way. Evyon’s proprietary hardware and Battery Cloud ecosystem enable the conversion of EV batteries into high-quality, affordable, and plug-and-play battery energy storage systems. Towards 2030, the amount of discarded EV batteries is estimated to grow to more than 200 GWh per year - the equivalent of more than 3 million EVs. Most of these are expected to be fully functional with less than 80% remaining capacity that can live on for 10+ years in a second life if you are able to identify them, repurpose them and operate them in an efficient and safe manner. This is exactly what Evyon is developing. Leaders in Cleantech #120 - Uri Levine

What’s it all about?Entrepreneurship, and the journey of failures. Uri Levine is the founder of not one, but two Unicorns, Waze and Moovit. He continues to be an active entrepreneur and investor, but his passion to help create more start-up success stories, and to support entrepreneurs led him to write ‘Fall in love with the problem, not the solution’. According to Steve Wozniak (Apple co-founder) it’s the ‘bible’ for entrepreneurs, I’d have to say it’s indispensable, especially for B2C and App founders, but for anyone building, or thinking of building a business. I caught up with Uri prior to an investor event in Prague. I hope you enjoy the episode.About Uri Levine: Uri is a passionate serial entrepreneur and disruptor. He co-founded Waze, the world’s largest driving traffic and navigation app, in 2007. The app, nowadays used by more than 750 million drivers around the globe, was acquired by Google in June of 2013 for $1.1 billion. Another achievement he is proud of is Moovit, ‘Waze for public transportation’, where he was the first board member and an investor. Moovit, which is used by more than 750 million individuals worldwide, was acquired by Intel for $1 Billion in 2020.Since Waze’s acquisition, Uri is actively pursuing his dream to create significant value for large audiences through the series of startups he founded. His vision is specifically intended to disrupt inefficient markets and improve under-functioning services, focus on solving ‘BIG problems’, saving consumers time and money while empowering them.Committed to spreading entrepreneurial thinking, it was only natural for Uri to take the next step with writing the book, “Fall In Love with the Problem – Not the Solution, a Handbook for entrepreneurs”In line with his vision, Uri dedicates significant time to public speaking engagements to audience around world, inspiring them through the lens of entrepreneurship and disruption, speaking of contemporary revolutions of markets and startups. Uri’s presentations rely heavily on his entrepreneurial and personal experiences with the intention to benefit people from the lessons he has learned and look back on both success and failures he has witnessed along his path.Uri is also motivated to encourage the next generation of thinkers and innovators and leads an academic workshop entitled “How to Build a Startup”, aimed at undergraduate and graduate level business students.Social links:  Uri Levine on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/uri-levine-85389/ Uri Levine on Twitter: https://twitter.com/urilevine1?lang=en   Uri Levine on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIWE3QJfJ98Hf9jD7oXXYZw Uri Levine Website: https://urilevine.com/ About Hyperion Executive Search:Hyperion are a specialist executive search firm working with some of the most innovative cleantech companies in the world, helping to find extraordinary talent to enable their growth and success. Leaders In Cleantech #116 - Dr Nicholas Hawker & Dr Robert Trezona - First Light Fusion

What’s it all about?Cheap, abundant, low carbon energy. Looking at a Deeptech that has huge and literally game-changing capabilities. There has been much excitement, investment, and some key milestones in Nuclear Fusion in the last year. This week I have not one, but two guests, a Fusion founder and CEO, Dr Nick Hawker, and his investor, Dr Robert Trezona of Kiko Ventures. This is such an exciting space, and things are happening now that give rise to great optimism we can achieve Fusion power within a couple of decades. In the meantime, let’s get as much solar and wind in the ground as we can, but here could be cheap, abundant, safe, baseload.About Nicholas Hawker: Nicholas is the Co-founder and CEO of First Light Fusion. Nick’s research into fusion began in 2007 as part of his Master’s thesis, where he worked at the University of Oxford with Yiannis Ventikos. This work continued into a DPhil, where he performed hydrodynamic simulations of shock-driven cavity collapse. These simulations showed that cavity collapse leads to inertial confinement of the gas inside the cavity and revealed that extreme states of matter could be reached, possibly entering the regime for fusion. To explore the concept of energy generation via this process, Nick and Yiannis co-founded First Light Fusion Ltd in 2011. Nick also spent three years tutoring at Lady Margaret Hall during his studies. After finishing his DPhil in 2012, Nick joined First Light Fusion as CEO and CTO, and continues to oversee the technical vision of the company.About First Light Fusion: First Light Fusion was founded by Professor Yiannis Ventikos, Head of the Mechanical EngineeringDepartment at University College, London, and Dr Nicholas Hawker, formerly an Engineering lecturer at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. The company was spun out from the University of Oxford in July 2011, with seed capital from IP Group plc,Parkwalk Advisors Ltd and private investors. Invesco and OSI provided follow-on capital. The business has grown from a research-focused university project to a fully-fledged company that has developed not only a strategy for how to make fusion energy work, but also a sustainable business model based on the technology. The team comprises experts in relevant scientific and engineering fields plus the management experience necessary to address the challenges which lie ahead.
