Evolution, information, and design

This is the last episode in David and Adam's series on the philosophical and scientific reasons for believing in God's existence. The two take you through the argument from biology and the irreducibly complex and purposefully arranged information found in DNA to the existence of a designer. For more detail from the leading proponents of this argument, see Michael Behe's Darwin's Black Box and Stephen C. Meyer's Signature in the Cell. Also, you may be interested to read how the "world's most notorious atheist" (Anthony Flew) changed his mind about the existence of God (based in large part upon the overwhelming evidence of design in the human genome). That can be found here: There is a God. And finally, after this episode was recorded David and Adam were fortunate to connect with one of the leading proponents of Intelligent Design theory—Dr. Stephen C. Meyer. Their conversion will be available as a bonus episode tomorrow. Part Two: A finely tuned cosmos and its implications

David and Adam dive back into the details of the universe's fine tuning, explain alternative theories (e.g. multiverse theory) to the one advanced by intelligent design, and discuss the implications all this has for the theistic worldview. "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork" (Psalm 19:1). Show Notes: · The book David and Adam keep referring to is Stephen C. A finely tuned cosmos and its implications

David and Adam are back at it, exploring the ramifications of philosophy and modern science on the question of God's existence. They begin with a brief conversation about what it means to be a critical realist and then hone back in on Big Bang cosmology while introducing the notion of what is often described as the fine-tuning of the universe. Meyer's The Return of the God Hypothesis. · Also see Alister McGrath's A Fine-Tuned Universe and Darwinism and the Divine. · The Nobel Prize winning astronomer Adam mentioned was Arno Penzias. On the evidence we have from the universe, he commented: "The best data we have are exactly what I would have predicted had I nothing to go on but the five books of Moses, the Psalms, and the Bible as a whole." · 1517 Podcast Survey · Support 1517 · 1517 Podcasts · The 1517 Podcast Network on Apple Podcasts · 1517 on Youtube What's New from 1517: · Faith and Reason Exchange @ 1517.org · 2023 HWSS Conference Livestream Signup · Join the 1517 Academy · Faith in the Face of Tyranny More from the hosts: · Adam Francisco · David Andersen ·

Contingency, the cosmos, and God's existence

David and Adam begin their series on the various arguments for (and reasons to believe in) God's existence. This episode begins with a little history behind the cosmological argument followed by a conversation about the implications of a contingent universe. Reason through the ages

David and Adam discuss how reason's competence (with respect to the Christian tradition) has changed over the centuries. Plato and Aristotle, medieval schoolmen like Thomas Aquinas and William of Ockham, and modern thinkers such as René Descartes and Charles Darwin are all discussed to set the stage for subsequent episodes addressing the reasonableness of belief in God's existence. What does faith have to do with reason?

What does faith have to do with reason? In this first episode of the Faith and Reason Exchange, David and Adam introduce themselves and their work after which they discuss the relationship of faith and reason. They begin by reflecting on the common assumption and, sometimes, accusation that faith and reason have nothing to do with each other and conclude, after a wide-ranging discussion, that the two are inseparable.
