159 - SPARK - It’s Time to Embrace the Asynchronous Mindset
My interviews with educators on the Teachers on Fire podcast are simply conversations that could be enjoyed between two professionals over a phone call. But instead, they’re being heard thousands of times by educators everywhere.
And perhaps that is the simplest way to summarize the contrast between synchronous and asynchronous learning: an in-person exchange versus one that is recorded, saved, and published.
The conversation is the same in both. But the shape and scope and power of the learning that can follow is very, very different.
It’s time for educators to embrace the power of The Asynchronous Mindset.
I’m excited about what’s ahead.
Welcome to SPARKS: mini-segments intended to spark your thinking and ignite your practice. These short episodes are based on my written reflections, which you can find on the Teachers on Fire Magazine at Medium.com.

157 - SPARK - Self-Reflection as Professional Development
What might it look like if as a professional learning community, we took ten minutes out of every week to answer these questions from the context of our professional practice and shared our results with each other?
1. What are you currently learning about professionally? What problem are you wrestling with in your practice? Which skills are you trying to master?
2. How is that learning going? How do you know?
3. What do you think are your next steps of professional growth?
Sharing might look like small physical groups circling up at the end of a staff meeting. It might mean responding to a quick Google Form at the end of every week. Reflections could even happen on Google Slides, Flipgrid, Padlet, or Twitter — all amazing tools of collaborative learning. However it rolled out, I think it could be a powerful practice.
Remember: students learn more when they are active, invested, and involved in the process. When they are given agency and ownership.
Teachers are no different.

155 - SPARK - From Surviving to Thriving: How I’m Finding My Fire
To help educators think strategically about moving from surviving to thriving, Grace Voo (@GraceLoVoo) put together a beautiful graphic that illustrates 50 Strategies to Move from Surviving to Thriving. Inspired by her collage, I’ve decided to share some of the ways that I intend to restore my soul and bring back my fire this summer.
Welcome to SPARKS: mini-segments intended to spark your thinking and ignite your practice. These short episodes are based on my written reflections, which you can find on the Teachers on Fire Magazine at Medium.com.

153 - SPARK - Schools Should Look Like Their Students
I’ve taught in schools in four cities. In each context, the student populations have been majority non-white while the staff populations have been majority white.
Take my two stepsons, for example. They are finishing tenth and eighth grade. Their father is white and their mother is Filipino, although to see them you might assume that they are not white at all.
Yesterday I asked them if they have ever had a teacher of Filipino or East Asian descent from Kindergarten through eighth grade. Nope. Not a one.
Think about that. In their first nine years of education, they have never had a teacher or administrator who looked like them.
They’ve had a lot of nice teachers and administrators, sure. Great people, even. But compare my experience to theirs. I almost always had teachers who looked like me.
They never have.
Does that effect privilege white kids? I think it has to.

151 - SPARK - So You’re Thinking of Becoming a Teacher
Recently a friend reached out to me with a question. “I’m thinking of becoming a teacher,” he shared. “What do you think?”
I’m 41, and I’ve been teaching for 19 years, so I have a pretty good sense of this profession. But education looks different for everyone.
The stakes are high in this field. It takes a lot to get into teaching, and it takes even more to stay in. And the stakes are even higher for students.
So instead of giving my friend a flat yes or no, I decided to lay out the pros and cons as well as I could.
