Episode 242: Advocacy Beyond 1:1 Therapy: Equity, Access, and Healing for Marginalized Communities [featuring Marvin Toliver]

In this episode, Patrick Casale talks with Marvin Toliver, LCSW, TEDx speaker, and founder of Dear Black Man, You Good?, about the realities of mental health work, decolonizing therapy, and building healing communities outside of traditional systems.3 Key Takeaways:Reclaim Your Accomplishments: As Marvin emphasized, marginalized clinicians are often taught to shrink themselves—owning your achievements creates space for others to see what’s possible.Therapist Sustainability is Essential: The mental health field can leave therapists depleted, and viewing burnout as a sign of systemic issues—rather than personal failure—is so important. Therapy shouldn’t cost you your well-being.Healing Goes Beyond the Office: Community-centered approaches and peer-led spaces (like Marvin’s men’s groups and the Train the Trainer Academy) acknowledge that powerful healing can happen outside of conventional therapy rooms.More about Marvin:Marvin (he/they) is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), speaker, and movement worker based in Philadelphia with over ten years of experience in mental health, community healing, and group facilitation. He is the owner of Reimagine Culture, LLC and founder of the nonprofit Dear Black Man, You Good?, where he advances decolonized and community-centered approaches to care. Marvin is a TEDx speaker and was featured as a cycle breaker in The Color of Care, a documentary produced by Oprah Winfrey. His work is grounded in reimagining mental healthcare beyond systems rooted in white supremacy.Website: marvintoliver.comInstagram: instagram.com/mtoliver_lcswInstagram: instagram.com/reimagineculture_llc–––––––––––––––––––––🎙️Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast🎙️Spotify🎙️Apple🎙️YouTube Music▶️ YouTube✈️ Learn about Retreats🗨️ Join the free Empowered Escape FB Community🗨️ Join the free All Things Private Practice FB Community–––––––––––––––––––––Thanks to Our Sponsors: The Receptionist for iPad, Alma, & Portland, Maine, Summit 2026!✨ The Receptionist for iPadThanks to The Receptionist for iPad for sponsoring this episode. The Receptionist for iPad is a HIPAA-ready digital check-in system that eliminates the need to walk back and forth from your office to the waiting room to see if your next appointment has arrived. Episode 241: If I Could Do Things Differently...

I just returned from an unforgettable month in Queenstown, New Zealand, which was top of my bucket list as a lifelong Tolkien fan, and my wife and I even did a vow renewal at Hobbiton. Beyond the scenery, the trip highlighted some powerful contrasts with life and business in the US, especially around community, culture, and personal well-being.After years of building a "dream career"—hosting 22 international retreats, running multiple ventures, and chasing “success”—I’ve learned some hard lessons about burnout, intentionality, and redefining what matters.3 Key Takeaways:Intentionality over Hustle: Success fueled by constant accomplishment and productivity isn’t sustainable or healthy. Prioritize what brings real meaning, not just external validation.Nervous System Matters: The environment and pace of life in New Zealand helped me realize what a regulated, safe nervous system actually feels like. Find spaces where you can unmask and genuinely recharge.Redefine Success: Stepping back can be the bravest move. Protect your capacity and focus on what truly aligns with your values—even if that means fewer events, more rest, and more saying no.It's a myth that we have to grind ourselves down to be worthy. Life is short.*I mentioned in this episode that during this trip, I got devastating news that one of my best friends has stage 4 brain cancer. I started a GoFundMe to help support him and his wife. Episode 240: Affirming Autism Assessments for High-Masking Adults [featuring Dr. Salena Justice]

In this episode, Patrick Casle and Dr. Salena Justice, a psychologist who specializes in working with high-masking autistic adults, talk about the realities of autism assessment and the ongoing need for affirming care in the mental health field. Here are 3 key takeaways:Affirming Approaches Matter: Many traditional training programs still lack truly affirming perspectives on autism, often focusing on stereotypical or high-support presentations. It's important for providers to move beyond outdated models and truly listen to the lived experiences of autistic individuals.Telehealth Can Be Empowering: Contrary to common hesitation, effective and affirming autism assessments are not only possible via telehealth—they can even be preferable for many autistic adults. Being in a familiar environment helps clients feel more at ease, making the assessment process more validating and less stressful.Language and Permission Shape the Experience: Creating a supportive space goes beyond formal assessments. Small changes—like offering examples of accommodations, normalizing special interests, or allowing follow-ups after sessions—can make a huge difference. Language that celebrates strengths (not just points out deficits) makes the process more empowering and constructive.More about Salena:Dr. Salena Justice is a licensed psychologist who specializes in working with high-masking autistic adults throughout the US. She specializes in skills-based therapy and autism evaluations, helping clients understand how their brains work and learn practical tools for everyday life, like managing burnout, emotions, relationships, and work without constant overwhelm. Episode 239: Be Annoying: Your Voice is Needed [featuring Caryn Zaner]

In this episode, Patrick Casale talks with Caryn Zaner, PsyD, founder of Therapy for the Apocalypse and Felt Not Fixed, about what it means to run a business—and a life—rooted in values, authenticity, and a commitment to community, especially while navigating the challenges of a capitalist system that isn’t designed for equity or collective care. Here are 3 key takeaways:Embrace Value Alignment, Even When It’s Hard: If your business decisions don’t feel authentic or congruent with your values, it’s nearly impossible to stay motivated or feel good about your work. It’s okay to leave “money on the table” if it means staying true to yourself.Community and Accessible Care Matter: Healing happens in relationships, not isolation. The use of equitable sliding scales and group therapy can make care more accessible and build genuine community in and out of the therapy room.Rejection is Part of Advocacy: Practice advocating for yourself, even if it feels “annoying.” Not everyone will be your people—and that’s by design. Standing up for what truly matters means you’ll attract your “right fit” clients and repel those who aren’t aligned. That’s how you create real impact.Let’s dare to be a bit more “annoying”—and a lot more authentic—in our work and our lives.More about Caryn:Caryn Zaner, PsyD, is a psychologist who runs Therapy for the Apocalypse (a private therapy practice) and Felt Not Fixed (a coaching and consulting project still finding its shape). In their clinical work, they offer virtual services for Oregon-based clients, specializing in group therapy and therapeutic intensives for people navigating identity transitions, relational and attachment trauma, and existential distress. Their approach integrates Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFiT), existential-humanistic principles, and relational process work, informed by liberational and feminist psychologies.Through Felt Not Fixed, Caryn offers coaching, consulting, and facilitation for people and teams who want to live and work in closer alignment with their values. This branch of their work centers on emotional authenticity, community connection, and creative experimentation.Across both spaces, Caryn helps people move from intellectual understanding to felt experience and from isolation to real contact.Offer:Check out Felt Not Fixed, a coaching and consulting space for values-driven humans, practitioners, and teams. It’s where Caryn (will) host evolving offerings like Values Clarity Sessions, Improv-based Perfectionism Recovery Workshops, and community-oriented groups on emotional processing and queer belonging. For Oregon residents seeking therapy, Caryn offers group therapy and therapeutic intensives rooted in relational and existential-humanistic work.Website: carynzanerpsyd.comFelt Not Fixed Coaching: feltnotfixed.podia.comInstagrams: @therapy.for.the.apocalypse and @felt.not.fixed–––––––––––––––––––––🎙️Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast🎙️Spotify🎙️Apple🎙️YouTube Music▶️ YouTube✈️ Learn about Retreats🗨️ Join the free Empowered Escape FB Community🗨️ Join the free All Things Private Practice FB Community–––––––––––––––––––––Thanks to Our Sponsors: The Receptionist for iPad, Alma, & Portland, Maine, Summit 2026!✨ The Receptionist for iPadThanks to The Receptionist for iPad for sponsoring this episode. The Receptionist for iPad is a HIPAA-ready digital check-in system that eliminates the need to walk back and forth from your office to the waiting room to see if your next appointment has arrived. Episode 237: Why Therapists Should Talk About Politics [featuring Lauren Roberts]

In this episode, Patrick Casale talks with Lauren Roberts, LPC, and ADHD-Certified Clinical Service Provider from South Louisiana, about the complexities and realities of therapists speaking (or not speaking) about politics in their practice. In today’s challenging climate—especially for marginalized and neurodivergent communities—this conversation feels more important than ever. Here are 3 key takeaways:Therapy is Political: Simply existing is political. For many clients, finding a therapist who affirms their values and needs isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Silence or neutrality can inadvertently alienate those who need support most.Relatability Equals Accessibility: How you show up online—on your website, in your bios, on social media—helps clients decide if you’re a safe person to call. Transparency about your values fosters agency for clients and ensures you’re the right fit for those searching for genuine support.Boundaries and Self-Care Are Essential: Advocacy comes with risk, especially online. Protecting your energy by setting boundaries (limiting comments, stepping away when needed, and being intentional about what you share) is crucial, especially if you’re neurodivergent or chronically ill.Whether you’re a therapist, coach, or just someone considering how to show up more authentically in your work, remember: clarity is kindness. Your community is looking for you.More about Lauren:Lauren Roberts is a Licensed Professional Counselor and ADHD Certified Clinical Service Provider (ADHD-CCSP) born and raised in South Louisiana. She transitioned from agency work into a group practice in 2021. Later that year, she helped build and launch a nonprofit that focused on providing quality, accessible mental health programs and resources to lower-income folks in her community. Over the next two years, she served as a clinical director for both the nonprofit and the associated group practice, mentoring and supporting counseling students and pre-licensed counselors as they explored how to show up authentically and sustainably in their work with clients. Now, she primarily works as an individual therapist in her own private practice, helping fellow anxious, neurodivergent, and chronically ill misfits to empower themselves to set boundaries, develop radical self-compassion, and process pain to move toward a more authentic life that honors their needs and values. Additionally, she facilitates a free local support group for anxious, neurodivergent folks learning to set boundaries, which has been meeting for 4 years. You can find Lauren online sharing memes, being silly, and approaching difficult topics to advocate for a more inclusive, radically kind world.Website: copinginchaos.comInstagram: instagram.com/copinginchaos–––––––––––––––––––––🎙️Listen to more episodes of the All Things Private Practice Podcast🎙️Spotify🎙️Apple🎙️YouTube Music▶️ YouTube✈️ Learn about Retreats🗨️ Join the free Empowered Escape FB Community🗨️ Join the free All Things Private Practice FB Community–––––––––––––––––––––Thanks to Our Sponsors: The Receptionist for iPad, Alma, & Portland, Maine, Summit 2026!✨ The Receptionist for iPadThanks to The Receptionist for iPad for sponsoring this episode. The Receptionist for iPad is a HIPAA-ready digital check-in system that eliminates the need to walk back and forth from your office to the waiting room to see if your next appointment has arrived. Episode 234: Beyond Picky Eating: How to Recognize and Treat ARFID [featuring Dr. Marianne Miller]

In this episode, Patrick Casale and Dr. Marianne Miller break down critical myths about Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and offer practical, compassionate approaches for clinicians, parents, and anyone supporting neurodivergent folks with eating challenges. Here are 3 key takeaways:ARFID is not “picky eating”: Labeling someone as a “picky eater” implies willfulness or stubbornness, when ARFID is in fact a complex, involuntary experience often tied to sensory processing and interoceptive cues.A collaborative, sensory-affirming approach matters: Treating ARFID requires asking nuanced questions about sensory preferences, hunger awareness, and family dynamics. Pressure, shame, and coercion do more harm than good—compassion and understanding are the foundation of effective support.Education is essential—for providers and families: Ongoing education and unlearning old beliefs is vital. There are fantastic resources and training for therapists, parents, and adults living with ARFID to build understanding and empathy.More about Dr. Marianne:Dr. Marianne is a licensed therapist with nearly 30 years in mental health and 13 years specializing in eating disorders. She spent 12 years as a full-time academic before moving into full-time private practice in 2018.
