204: theSkimm Founders, Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin

Now, if you're someone who's always on the go, looking for a way to consume the day's top new stories in the fastest way possible, you may already be a subscriber to this or you've heard about it, but you have to check out theSkimm - one word. It's a free, daily email newsletter that goes out each morning, gives you all the important news across subject lines, and party lines. It is simple, and kind of a sassy roundup of the latest news stories with fresh editorial content catering mainly to a young female audience. It's fun to read, easy to understand, easy to explain to a friend after work at a happy hour, what's say going on in Greece or the latest in the electoral race. And I'm not only a fan, I guess you could also say I'm sort of a contributor to theSkimm. In my partnership with Chase Slate, the brand partnered with theSkimm to create some cool and interesting editorial content around financial fitness that I helped create. So I'm very proud to introduce today's guests, the co-founders of theSkimm. They are friends, Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin and you're gonna love their story. Carly and Danielle, they originally met in Rome, they were studying abroad, it was a rainy day and they were both studying in Rome, they were in college.Years later they reconnected in New York as they were both producers for NBC News - how bout that? And they not only became fast friends again, but they also became roommates and co-founded theSkimm from their living room couch. Both of them have now been included on Forbes 30 Under 30 List this year. They were honored by Goldman Sachs Builders and Innovator Summit as one of the most 100 Intriguing Entrepreneurs in 2014. Danielle is a Tufts grad; she hails from Chicago. While Carly is a New Yorker who attended the University of Pennsylvania. And what brought them together and what really sparked theSkimm, was and is their passion for news. And so these ladies are just a force to be reckoned with, and they're also really relatable. I loved talking with them.Learn more about Farnoosh's upcoming literary workshop Book to Brand. Early bird registration is now open! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

199: Philip Taylor, Founder of FinCon & Blogger PTMoney.com

Today I am interviewing the blogger Philip Taylor from PT Money. In 2007 he created his blog to share his experiences trying to get out of debt, building savings and getting educated on personal finance. Even though he had finance in his blood – his father was a CPA – already had a career as a CPA himself doing financial auditing and public accounting, he still needed to learn more about personal finance. But he quickly took control of his financial life, and turned his situation around – blogging about it all the way.In 2011, he created FinCon, an annual conference for financial bloggers in the fall, which I have attended! He has also written for U.S. News & World Report, TurboTax and others, as well as made a few TV appearances. He generates his income entirely from his blog, and focuses on saving for early retirement, growing his businesses, investing in real estate and investing in his family.Three key takeaways:Starting a part-time blog in 2007 and how he was able to grow that into a full-fledged business. When you feel entitled to spend…ever felt that way? Like you deserved something because you worked hard? The future of FinCon…Philip actually offers some breaking news…a plan he’s never shared before.Learn more about Farnoosh's upcoming literary workshop Book to Brand. 197: Jeff Yeager, "The Ultimate Cheapskate"

What’s your definition of cheap? Do you think you’re cheap? Is the person you’re living with – cheap? I got into trouble once because I went on ABC news and talked about MY personal definition of cheap versus frugal…To me, being cheap means wasting time and energy to save money, being inconsiderate or rude or harmful in your pursuit of saving money. And as an example I mentioned some forms of extreme couponing. And boy did that get the couponers MAD! I got SO much hate email…! Now, not all couponing is bad. But I know there are people out there who spend hours a day to cut coupons and all they save is $20 or $30. $20 or $30 is not insignificant BUT when you account for all that time and energy and perhaps the fact that you were cutting coupons while your son needed your help with his science project…(I’m making this up!) that perhaps you’re not being frugal. You’re being CHEAP. And if you’re going to hate me for saying that, that’s OK by me! And all of this brings me to TODAY’s guest. Jeff Yeager, dubbed “The Ultimate Cheapskate” by Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today Show, specializes in teaching others how to spend smart in order to spend less and living frugally.  He is also an accomplished author of several books on the topic, including “Don’t Throw That Away!” “The Cheapskate Next Door” and “The Ultimate Cheapskate’s Road Map to True Riches”. He hosts The Cheap Life on YouTube which also provides video content about living the good life at a fraction of the cost. If you’re an AARP member, perhaps you may recognize today’s guest as he is one of their saving’s experts.  Learn more about Farnoosh's upcoming literary workshop Book to Brand.
