As far as the routine goes, feed mill researchers conduct experiments, facilitate the manufacture of research diets to meet internal or external demands, and deal with day-to-day operations associated with budgeting, maintenance, and human resources, for example. All of it with the aim of advancing science in this field. However, what are some of the challenges and opportunities within University Feed Mill programs? Precision poultry farming utilizes a variety of tools, technologies, and even procedures to optimize the production and the environment – including the response of birds to it. His primary research and extension interests include animal environmental engineering and precision poultry farming. Prior to joining UGA, Dr. Chai was a Postdoc Research Associate at the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering of Iowa State University (ISU)., where he led field studies on commercial farms for two USDA-NIFA programs for improving indoor air quality of cage-free egg production facilities and for exploring practical means of preventing and controlling airborne infectious poultry diseases, such as avian influenza. His contributions include 110 scientific publications and 15 awards/honors. Nutrition is a key to success in poultry production. That means that every process involved with nutrition is crucial to ensure the best outcomes – and that’s where the feed mill comes in. Understanding and improving feed mill processes and regulations, feed milling operations, ingredient and feed quality, and feed safety are essential for supporting the poultry industry. In this episode, I talk to Dr. Wilmer Pacheco about the impact of the feed milling process, nutrition, and physiology on poultry performance. Shortly afterwards, he moved to North Carolina, where he joined a feed milling manager trainee program with Murphy Brown LLC and became the night shift supervisor, responsible for overseeing the production of approximately 10,000 tons of pelleted feed per week. Then, he obtained a Scholarship at the Poultry Department at North Carolina State University, where he also earned his Master's Degree in Poultry Science and his Doctorate in Physiology and Nutrition. In 2014, he joined the Department of Poultry Science of Auburn University, where he has been working as Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist. His research focuses on the interrelationships between feed milling, nutrition, and physiology on poultry performance. As we discuss the future of poultry production, animal welfare always comes up as a hot topic – but what do we really know about it? Is it possible to understand what and how a chicken feels? Measuring emotion and affective state in chickens is quite a novel and complex field of study in poultry welfare. And that’s the central theme of this episode: the nuances and difficulties in evaluating the emotions of chickens. He joined Perdue Foods in 1998 and is currently the Senior Vice President of Technical Service and Innovation. In his present role, he is responsible for technical support (nutritional, veterinary, laboratorial, the continuous improvement of live operations, welfare programs, and compliance) as well as technical innovation (turning innovative technologies from just good ideas into real changes within Perdue Foods’ everyday business). Those responsibilities include 11 feed mills, 15 hatcheries, and the health and care of 13 million chickens – placed weekly on family farms throughout the 14 states that Perdue raises chickens. He has been guiding the company’s industry-leading transformation in how chickens are raised and he was vital in the company’s successful shift away from antibiotics. Poultry production includes more than just one species. Each one of them has its own characteristics, so production for each species is conducted differently. There are many differences between turkeys and chickens when it comes to nutrition, general management, facilities, and behavior, so the more you know about the particularities, the more effective your production will be. In this episode, Dr. Sally Noll and I discuss turkey production specificities and needs, as well as recent research on the subject. Because of the extension appointment, her research and extension program vary depending on assessed needs for problem solving in poultry production. Past collaborative projects of hers include evaluations of production systems, environmental impacts on turkey production, biosecurity approaches, ammonia emissions from turkey facilities, gut health and microbiome succession, and areas with problems related to reovirus-arthritis and avian metapneumovirus. There are many differences between backyard poultry operations and commercial poultry systems. Backyard poultry can include pets as well as animals as a food source – such as eggs – and diseases can be introduced into the flock in many ways that are unnoticed by the owner. And besides, it’s often a challenge for backyard growers to recognize and associate different clinical signs with different diseases. Consequently, a good poultry diagnostician working in that sector must educate their customers and promote small flock health and preventive care. It was only after shadowing a mixed animal practitioner that she realized there were veterinary careers that focus on population medicine, and she decided to become a large animal veterinarian. After receiving her DVM from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, she was undecided on whether to focus on dairy, poultry, or pathology, but finally chose to become a poultry diagnostician. He co-chaired the feed additive and methane committees of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations - FAO. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed articles and received several awards including Excellence in Ruminant Nutrition and International Agriculture from the American Society of Animal Science, and 2022 Chancellor’s Innovator of the year award. He served on two committees of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine on methane and nutrition of dairy cattle. He is regularly an invited speaker including a TED talk. His research was in the top 10 of all research conducted at the University of California system in 2021. The latest outbreaks of avian influenza have raised concerns for the poultry industry. We already know a lot about influenza, so what are we missing? Are we prepared to deal with an endemic outbreak in the United States? What aspects should be taken into account when designing avian influenza control and mitigation strategies? A molecular virologist, immunologist, and epidemiologist, he has been working on understanding viral pathogen ecology for 42 years. As well as developing new and effective vaccines, he led efforts to improve the detection and surveillance of viral diseases. He also developed vaccine strategies to protect commercially grown chickens against pathogens, like avian influenza viruses, that have infected humans. His research has had a profound impact on practices used today to reduce the incidence and severity of viral diseases in commercially grown poultry.
