Biblical Dream Study with Carol Oschmann
What does the Bible teach us about how to understand our own dreams? In this Christmas Eve edition of the Dream Journal, we speak with Carol Oschman about her book, Biblical Dream Study. The Bible mentions dreams 134 times, yet the dreams of modern-life parishioners are rarely mentioned from the pulpit. Carol Oschmann shares with us practical advice about understanding our own dreams derived from looking at the way that the Biblical figures interpreted theirs. She shares many Bible dream stories including Jacob, Solomon and of course, Joseph and his famous interpretation of the dream of the seven fat cows being eaten up by the seven lean cows.
For example, Carol suggests that we, like Jacob, turn and face the beings that are chasing us in our own dreams, either in the dream itself or in waking life imagination. She also defines what she calls “Golden Sword” dreams akin to Judas’ dream of being given a sword to defeat his enemies. These are dreams in which we are given tools to accomplish our goals. She gives examples of how she and others have been helped by ideas presented in dreams. We finish by touching on how dreams help with the grief of bereavement and Carol shares her own journey of recently losing her husband.
BIO: Carol began her journey with dreams due to a spiritual awakening in 1985. She’s traveled and spoken across the country and in England, taught dream interpretation in a prison for three years, led several dream groups. The spiritual experience was so exciting, that’s all she wanted to talk about. Unfortunately the pastor in her Methodist church didn’t agree and asked her not to come back. This book “Biblical Dream Study” in a way is her answer to those Christians who don’t believe that God speaks to us in dreams. (Note that the correct way to pronounce Carol’s last name is “Osh-man”.)

Egyptian Mysteries and Lucid Dreaming with Sarah Janes
Is there evidence to show that people were lucid dreaming in ancient times? Today’s guest is Sarah Janes. We’ll talk about her interests in ancient mysteries and her new book: Initiation into Dream Mysteries: Drinking from the Pool of Mnemosyne.
Sarah describes how she has been lucid dreaming since a baby and often returns to the same dream places again and again. We talk about the Asklepion Dream Temple healing traditions including inductions that will maximize your chances of encountering gods and goddesses in dreams or their avatars including snakes or dogs. She speaks about Mnemosyne (pronounced knee-moss-in-nay) who was the mother of the Muses and served to guide the deceased to Hades. Drinking from her pool ensures remembrance.
Sara describes several techniques to enhance dream recall including practicing by writing down a waking day as if it were a dream. She also speaks about cognitive enhancers that can increase the frequency of lucid dreaming and ends by describing her ongoing podcast releases and some of her many upcoming events.
BIO: Sarah Janes is a hypnotherapist, a lucid dreamer and an studier of Egyptian antiquities. She hosts many online events, schools and podcasts regarding ancient mysteries. Her new book is called Initiation into Dream Mysteries: Drinking from the Pool of Mnemosyne which refers to the Greek goddess of memory, sense-making and eloquence. Mnemosyne is the archetypal deity of the Asklepion dream temple tradition. Sarah’s book explores the history and culture of the dream as medicine in the Western esoteric tradition and is designed to lead the reader on a self-initiatory journey inspired by the dream philosophies and sleep temple systems of our wisest ancient ancestors.

Nightmares Demystified with Jason DeBord aka u/RadOwl
A conversation with an author of four books about dreaming, we talk about the ins and outs of nightmares and how to stop them. AKA RadOwl, our guest is Jason DeBord, moderator for the reddit page r/dreams. With over 200,000 members, it is by far the largest dream-sharing community in the world.
Jason starts by talking about a 30-year ordeal that began as a nightmare when he was a child and ended with an exorcism by a shaman. As a way of dealing with nightmares, we speak about lucid dreaming and addressing the intelligence behind the dream. We also speak about trauma and how nightmares and other dreams start to evolve once we start to work with them. Jason suggests that the main cause for nightmares is a conflict between the conscious and unconscious minds.
We take a call from Ronnie from Santa Cruz who tells about a friend who shared with him a dream about an owl. We end by musing about why dreams speak in symbols instead of more directly.
BIO: J.M. DeBord is the author of 4 books about dreams and the lead moderator of the largest online community for dream sharing, r/dreams (dreams.reddit.com), where he is known as RadOwl. He created the DREAMS 1-2-3 process of dream interpretation and the online school, RadOwl’s Dream School, found at dreamschool.net. He is co-host of the popular podcast The Dreams That Shape Us, found at DreamsShapeUs.com.

Dream Gems with Jane Carleton
Dreams often bring simple moments of magic that can make all the difference, and every dream has hidden jewels ready to be uncovered. We talk today to dream guide and professional gemologist Jane Carleton. Jane describes how she knows when a person has found the right gem for them because their bodies change and their eyes light up. This is similar to dream work when an “Aha!” will light up a dreamer often without them being able to explain it. Jane shares stories about asking for waking life magic and about using talismans to help remember the dream. She also speaks about waking life inner voice experiences and shares a moment where that voice saved her during a carjacking. We take a call from Walter who shares an intense nightmare of a boy who is attacked by two giant gems.
BIO. Jane E. Carleton, MA, GG holds two graduate degrees in Dream Studies, and Consciousness and Transformative Studies and has taught graduate courses on dreams at the California Institute of Integral Studies. As a Graduate Gemologist since 1984 she pursues two careers: as a dream specialist and fine jewelry appraiser. Jane is especially interested in how simple moments of magic can make all the difference, and how all dreams have hidden jewels ready to be uncovered. She is currently writing a book that shows how dreams, inner voice experiences, and synchronistic experiences can inspire us and help us navigate challenging times.

Bring Your Dreams to Life with Rodger Kamenetz
Instead of puzzling over the meaning of your dreams, bring them to life with Natural Dreamwork. Katherine speaks with poet and author Rodger Kamenetz. He suggests a practice of exploring dreams which starts with counting your blessings. He also spoke about dreams as symbolic in the same way that poems are and about dreaming as a sacred encounter.
We take calls from Kat from Delaware who dreams about a baby with a too long neck and from Maureen who dreams about waiting for her boyfriend by two bridges.
BIO: Rodger Kamenetz is the author of 15 books of poetry and prose. His book The Jew in the Lotus is an international best-seller. He is Professor Emeritus at LSU where he founded the MFA program in creative writing and the Jewish Studies minor. He is the founder of Natural Dreamwork, an international group of twenty dreamwork practitioners who approach the dream as a natural resource for healing and spiritual growth. The History of Last Night’s Dream was featured on Oprah Winfrey’s Soul Series. The Natural Dreamwork approach is to avoid interpretation and focus instead on bringing to life rich moments of feeling in dreams that arise in sacred encounters.
A recent presentation to the Yale Alumni Association gives a good sense of the approach that he’s developed after eighteen years of experience working with dream clients: https://youtu.be/KFQCBU9U7ik
