MMP128: Strong Willed Kids Need a Different Parenting Approach

In this episode, I focus specifically on strong willed kid behaviors and the obstacles in parenting these kiddos. There are many cultural components, especially when it comes to our own fixed mindset conditioning.  It can feel like a failure as a parent when you have a strong willed kid. Today, I unpack many pieces of this equation in a way that I don’t think I’ve spelled out quite like this before. The bottom line is that having a challenging or differently wired kid propels us to shift, learn new things and ultimately, grow. If you have a strong willed kid, I hope you’ll do more than just passively listen today. Get honest and think about whether you’ve taken action to help your kiddo feel better understood and more supported. And if your child’s behavior is consistently difficult, it’s a sure sign that more action needs to happen. We have an amazing affordable program available to help you re-program that unhelpful auto pilot conditioning. Go to www.mastermindparenting.com/30 to sign up and take action STAT! MMP127: 3 Tangible Virtual School/Pack Leadership Tips

In this episode, I share some very tangible pack leadership tips to help you with virtual learning and beyond. All good leaders know you have to have a plan. Crossing your fingers and just hoping for the best usually doesn’t work out too well for any of us. Therefore, it’s important to figure out your plan for the school day that’ll help your kids be successful. Next, you’ll need to effectively communicate the plan. And finally, following through with the plan and following through when the plan isn’t followed with appropriate consequences is critical. If you’d like to receive the handout with these tips and more to support you, please email us at info@randirubenstein.com and put “Home School Tips Handout” in the subject line and we’ll send it over to you! MMP126: 5 Tips on Becoming the Homeschool Teacher You NEVER Asked to be

In this episode, I talk about the virtual learning reality many of us are facing for this upcoming 2020/2021 school year due to the current Covid pandemic. First of all, last time I checked, most of us didn’t sign up to homeschool our kids or to deal with a pandemic. Therefore, we need a minute to adjust to this reality and get in a productive head space. You really have to allow yourself time to process so that you’re able to face the mindset piece b/c most likely, you didn’t volunteer to help manage your kids during their school day. MMP125: How to Minimize Meltdowns through Leadership & Boundaries

In this LONG episode, I really ramble on about all sorts of stuff:). I really lost track of time, went off the cuff and talked about why loving pack leaders must have boundaries. Pack leadership minimizes meltdowns because it represents confidence, strength and safety. Boundaries define borders and ground the people feeling unbalanced in their nervous systems, i.e., the melting down big and little humans.  I have found that many moms have a really hard time with boundaries. I believe at the core of this limitation is the secret obstacle...the conditioning that you’re not worthy of having your own voice, space, time and standards about how you will and won’t live.  This is a big topic and a core issue in our culture re: women and a lack of feeling as worthy as “them”. Now this may not be something we think we believe. We may tell ourselves the opposite and spew feminist messages from the rooftops. However, if you have a hard time making time for yourself or “getting” the people to do the things and/or you feel like “must be nice to be able to”, and you’re constantly doing everything for everyone and there’s no time or energy left for the stuff you wanna do...well then sister friend, we gotta talk.  You deserve to take up space in the world and not to put the needs of everyone else constantly before your own. And until you BELIEVE you’re truly worthy to do that, you’re gonna continue to have a hard time following thru on boundaries. And until you enforce consequences for boundary crossing behavior, the meltdowns in your family will persist.  I normally try and make the podcast episodes short and sweet but this is a big topic and I decide to just allow my unfiltered thoughts to pour out in hopes that it might help you if you’re struggling with persistent meltdowns in your family. I know it’s painful to live like that. I also know that you wanna have a family that gets along. I’d love to invite you to explore your own story if you’re struggling with pack leadership, boundaries and enforcing consequences. You deserve more. I’m determined to fight for you to have that.   Get my problem-solving one-sheet! MMP124: Meltdowns and Safety

In this episode, I breakdown the concept of emotional safety; what it really looks like to have it, create it and demand it. My own little “armchair expert” theory has led me to believe that many of us were not raised in environments where it was safe to feel all the intense feelings. Humans crave to feel unconditionally loved and celebrated for the real person we were born to be. I see this time and time again when I really get to know people.  I think we are born as perfect little humans and then the big humans accidentally send the littles the message that it’s not safe to be the honest, real, raw, messy, beautiful person you were intended to become. Those messages are internalized and there are a variety of ways people deal with the pain that comes from not feeling fully expressed. Some people learn coping skills that allow them to live life on the surface and pretend the pain doesn’t exist. This can seem like it’s working for the most part AND spoiler alert, there is an expiration date on that coping pattern. When life throws a curveball like it always does, the people who seem most “together” are often the first to fall apart.  Then there are others who can’t pretend they feel good when they don’t.  These are the people where life involves a pretty good deal of suffering. They have no problem acting out no matter who’s around. These are the sensitive people. The highly intuitive ones. These. Are. Our. Strong. Willed. Kids. They are begging for the grown ups to create emotional safety for them so they can feel seen, understood and safe to develop better skills to deal with the overwhelming big feelings in their bodies. The frequent meltdowns over seemingly trivial things are always a sign that they are in emotional pain. Meltdowns will never be squashed until emotional safety is created. MMP123: Meltdowns & Fear

In this week’s conversation, I’m breaking down the concept that anger is rooted in fear and when fear is on the scene, growth cannot occur. When our kids, or frankly anyone, displays meltdown behavior, the anger often feels palpable. It’s scary. Fear is directly linked to explosive meltdown moments.  It’s actually quite normal to have fears. Humans are actually designed to scan our environments for danger. This is called the human negativity bias. So if you’re a person that has many fears, the bottom line is: You’re. Normal. I think it’s important to understand fear and anger in a way that many of us have never actually thought about. Intense anger is uncomfortable and scary. Meltdowns feel uncomfortable and scary for kids and grown ups. Whether you’re the person having the meltdown or witnessing it, we all feel out of control. It can leave parents feeling powerless and this often leads to attempts to control our kids with fear tactics like threats, spanking and punishing. Kids under the age of twelve do NOT improve future behavior through fear tactics. When fear is running the show, we operate from the lower parts of our brain. We literally become the neanderthal versions of ourselves, designed to merely aggressively grunt, fight and survive. Obviously, it’s pretty ridiculous to think that our kids will learn from their mistakes when they are in this brain state. It’s also illogical to think we’re going to be effective guides or teachers when we’re in a triggered brain state as well. This is why absolutely no teaching can happen when any human is having a meltdown. Before the sun can warm, nourish and allow flowers to bloom again, the storm must pass.  Lectures, withholding love, shaming and yelling will not prevent future meltdowns. MMP122: Meltdowns & Loneliness

This month on the podcast, I’m talking about the roots of meltdown behavior...for all humans. We often use the term “meltdown” to describe a young child’s explosive behavior. However, I want to invite you to consider looking at your own behavior as well. When humans feel unsafe or outta control on the inside, we act out those feelings with outta control behavior on the outside. It may look like explosiveness, numbing or “over” behaviors like overeating, over drinking, over shopping, over gossiping, yelling, blaming or even shutting down and checking out, which is called dissociation.  These behaviors are incredibly isolating and cause so much loneliness and disconnection. It’s a sign that we haven’t learned healthier ways of managing big feelings - something every human experiences.  We all go through hard things and experience discomfort. When we lack the skills to manage our big feelings, we ease the discomfort in other ways and develop coping skills. By understanding this very common issue for many of us and learning to begin seeing our kids’ negative behaviors differently, we’re able to develop new skills and in turn support our kids more productively. This is why becoming a Mastermind parent is a hugely healing process for you, your kids and your entire family. THIS is the real journey in my opinion. We all just wanna feel better and learn to support ourselves and the people we love better. I’m so glad you’re here. Love y’all! Get my problem-solving one-sheet! MMP121: Parenting is NOT About the Latest Spyware

In this episode, I’m sharing a FB Live I made in my Mastermind where I candidly discuss talking to our young teenage boys about porn and sex. Fun topic, right?!? I mean, really...can you imagine a more uncomfortable topic between a mom and a encroaching puberty? Look, if you can talk about sex and porn with your developing kids, what can’t you talk about? AND when we’re families that can have difficult conversations, our kids will be more likely to turn to us for support when they experience something scary or risky. They need us during the teen years rather than teenagers educating teenagers about mature and often risky topics. This is such an important topic. We can’t be scared to learn and be prepared for the difficult conversations. Our kids need us more than ever. So parent up! I got you.    Get my problem-solving one-sheet! MMP120: Are You Skipping the Basics?

In this episode, I talk about this time of metamorphosis and using it to re-balance, re-calibrate and get back to the basics of bike riding, swimming and skating. Many of our kids are missing out on these basic skills and as a result are unbalanced. Go outside with your kids. Get on a bike. Lace up some blades. Get in the pool with your kids and allow yourself to get pruney. We are all going through a metamorphosis right now and it’s time to get back to the basics. We need this as humans. MMP119: What to do if your child is cruel to your animals

In today’s episode, I’m speaking to a mom of a 4-year old about his mean behavior towards the family’s new puppy. Mom was concerned her child might be a psychopath. She asked for help in a public FB group for parents and the comments of several fellow parents made me mad. GRRRRR. They gave her incorrect info and essentially confirmed her fear that there was something wrong with her kid. Not. Helpful. The child is not a psycho killer. He’s four! He just needed different guidance to become a little boy that could play and develop a deep bond with his new fur sibling. I want to make a parenting public service to stop posting in public parent groups without official leadership by a qualified moderator.
