Sweat rates and concentration can vary hugely - from 300ml per hour to 1500ml per hour. And 200mg of sodium to 1500mg+ per hour.

There are lots of different variables to consider when it comes to open water swimming vs pool swimming.
From ensuring your wetsuit helps rather than hinders your body position in the water ...

...to learning how to draft effectively off of other swimmers' feet.
I also explain our top tips for drills to practice in the pool that will help get you "open water ready". Covering everything from breathing exercises to body position to maximising the power and effectiveness of your catch and pull.

Often there's as much as a 5-10% difference, with the more "favourable" numbers from training indoors.
I've spoken to dozens - probably hundreds - of IRONMAN athletes who assumed their indoor power numbers were directly transferable to outdoor riding, resulting in them riding at too high an intensity during their bike leg, and REALLY suffering on the run as a result.
