Coming Soon - Let’s Talk About: Kashmir
This week, we launch our new, fortnightly podcast, Let’s Talk About. In this series, we bring you nuanced explorations into one subject in every episode. No short cuts, no crash courses, but a deep dive that offers you perspective. The first subject we consider is Kashmir, coveted by two countries and home to one of the longest-running insurgencies in the world. Abhinandan Sekhri tries to figure out what is about the Kashmir problem that nobody -- from Jawahar Lal Nehru to Atal Bihari Vajpayee to Narendra Modi -- could solve it. We talk to historians, journalists, activists, authors and ex-Army officers who were stationed there, to tell us about the disappointments and complications that have made Kashmir so precious and ever more contentious with every passing year. Since it's the first in the series, we've got two episodes on Kashmir and the first one is available to all our listeners. The second part of Let's Talk About: Kashmir will only be available to subscribers. To subscribe: https://www.newslaundry.com/subscription Hosted on Acast. Hafta 102: Sahara Diaries, Indian-Flag Doormats, Jallikattu And More
The Supreme Court dismissed a plea seeking a probe into the Sahara and Birla diary entries, and Madhu Trehan has the mother of all conspiracy theories about them. Why didn't the apex court find these diaries worth investigating? Speaking of investigations, Tej Bahadur Yadav, a Border Security Force’s (BSF) jawan put up a video showing how badly jawans are treated, and it's led to an enquiry into the matter. Similar videos have been popping up all week and we discuss why some news channels picked up Yadav's story while others didn't. Anand Ranganathan has some strong thoughts on Sushma Swaraj’s threat to Amazon as well as the demand that the ban on Jallikattu be lifted. Donald Trump’s first press conference took place this week, which made Deepanjana Pal wonder about where the American media is headed and Abhinandan Sekhri has a song that Rahul Gandhi can dedicate to Mulayam Singh Yadav. Hafta 101: Samajwadi Party Feud, Bengaluru Molestation, BCCI vs Supreme Court
Columnist and author Arnab Ray, better known as Greatbong, joins us for this episode of Hafta. Samajwadi Party made headlines thanks to Mulayam and Akhilesh keeping feuds in the family. Is all this staged and if it is, who benefits from it? There are many differing points of view on the case of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vs Supreme Court. Ray has some insights to offer, along with a fascinating study of how cricket has mirrored Indian society over the years. We also discuss the terrible case of mass molestation in Bengaluru on December 31 and whether any point is served by lambasting misogynists like Abu Azmi. The Opposition doesn't want the budget announced before elections in five states, but is that reasonable? We discuss all this and a little bit about demonetisation with Abhinandan Sekhri, Madhu Trehan, Deepanjana Pal, Anand Ranganathan and Manisha Pande on the panel. There are also some important announcements, letters from our listeners and a song dedicated to those who support us.
