GDI Candy

This week, Kate starts by sharing her thoughts on how being fashionable in the early aughts meant to try the absolute HARDEST, a revelation that feels as glaring as her patent leather pumps after witnessing the shift in collegiate fashion upon spending "welcome weekend" in a college town. Then, she touches on Selling OC before reminiscing via reading through residual sorority stories that listeners submitted the past two years from when she was going to resuscitate the sorority series (before accidentally spending two hours last week analyzing if it was high camp instead). A variety of topics are covered, from sayings like "we plan and God laughs," to the lore of one-shoulder tops, reviews the Kingdom Chaser/Clout Chaser/Straight No Chaser Venn Diagram of sorority archetypes, discusses the sorority symbols that had the most hot-girl energy, to lusting after the mystery of a non-Greek suitor who (if you can believe it) attended college to *learn,* to name a few. Kate also discusses the differences between NPC and NPHC and then snorkels the submitted responses for how chapters sugarcoated the reasons for why a girl wasn't the right "fit" by saying things like she's "worldly" "cute" or "nice," among other adjectives that are compliments in real life but death wishes in the Greek system. However, like any true sorority girl, we always end on a positive and Kate promises this will be the last Greek Life-related ep for 2022. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Store

This week, Kate discusses Bama RushTok from a slightly different angle, exploring the elaborate gender performance and implicit artifice of sorority recruitment in the context of being interpreted as [postmodern] 'camp' and a form of high art to consume, per the insight of Tiktok users @shorthouseplant and @themostes. The meaning of camp made the internet collectively melt down in 2019 following the Met Gala (given its defining characteristic being an inability to be concretely defined), but Kate attempts to explore how as a society we've embraced this incredibly unserious process with a serious level of investment perhaps due to the naïveté of those earnestly performing within these exaggerated circumstances. She also deep dove breakout star Kylan and just needed someone to talk to about the high/low of her dorm room, her pageant trajectory and [alleged] last minute switch to Bama, and her hypothesis about what's going on behind the scenes when you show up to Bama rush with a catch phrase and complete ~11 brand deals in 14 days of high exposure. Kate also spends a solid amount of time thinking of the bumping process as a sort of performance art, and talks about the increased showcasing of dancing/cheerleading talent in Tiktok videos, where the performance of sorority values in the form of costumes and choreography is not only performed for positioning among PNMs, but now to the world, and Kate's worried about the HS cheer gals being pulled out of retirement to do roundoff back handsprings in spirit skirts on concrete in the name of sisterhood seduction. Soft Swinging for the Fences

This week, Kate is joined by her sister to discuss what they've been up to, e.g. their unforeseen TV debut, Kate's new appreciation for sports, and the latest updates with the "soft swinging" scandal they recorded about for Patreon in May. Then, they snorkel listener submitted topics like nostalgic foods, first day of school outfits, what it's like to be the 'planner' of the group, making new friends in a city, The Summer I Turned Pretty, favorite fictional bands, and much more. Kate-lilah #15 (Answering Listener Voicemails)

This week, Kate is in and out of coherence as she records responses to listener voicemails throughout week 2 of fertility treatments. Kate-lilah is a play on radio icon Delilah's soothing highly subjective advice and once a quarter Kate answers listener questions, requests for advice, or plays commentary called into the show's voicemail hotline (312) 379-9676. This week, Kate chose a list of light topics by design for a breezy escape of an episode (with the exception of the last that's a bit more serious). Topics include: -An unexpected hormonal side effect -Kate's beef with the Charli D'Amelio / Landon Barker / Huddy triangle -A snorkel through dorm checklist / move-in culture -Ideal Bravo Ultimate Girls Trip, housewives & non-housewives edition -How to define A, B, & C list celebrities and how to stratify across showbiz/sports/influencers/etc. -Caught in a love triangle. What's the beth thing to do? -Does Kate believe in Taylor Swift's rumored skipped album "Karma?" -The Katherine/Kaitlin/Kate/Katie of it all -How to respond to people who say rude things about how much IVF is or saying things like "you should just adopt" etc. Enjoy! Sami is a Girl's Best Friend

This week, Kate is joined by Sami Sage (Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Betches) to have a stimulating conversation while they both happen to be stimulating their ovaries. They discuss their respective decisions to freeze embryos (briefly! skip mins 15-25ish if you want to dodge fertility talk), then venture into topics that are half light pop culture and half a deeper religious discussion (Kate's favorite combo!). First, they discuss their feelings about being renters/city dwellers, then talk about TS and her involvement with Crawdads and David O. Russell, Ben and Jen, DeuxMoi's identity reveal, Jen Shah pleading guilty, and Kate's frustration in feeling like Miami swim week on Tiktok is VS fashion show deja vu. Then, Sami shares some of her experiences and observations in the context of Judaism that are related to the topics Kate often covers re: Evangelical Christianity. She discusses the differences between identifying as secular or non-secular, shares some differences about Jewish summer camp relative to Kate's experiences, discusses what purity culture looks like in the context of certain Orthodox practices, explains the antithetical nature of abortion laws, etc. Overall a balanced and interesting episode that hits on hot topics and also provides a helpful perspective about commonly discussed topics on BTI5 in the context of another faith experience. An Elephant Never Forgets

This week, Kate talks through a prompt from a listener about the times somebody said something to you in passing that ended up burned in your brain about your appearance, skills, competence, personality, etc. In a conversation about why words matter (revelatory!!), Kate rages through insults, side comments, and backhanded compliments listeners submitted that were likely meaningless on behalf of the messenger but transformational in their messaging long term. She also discusses her own list of personal experiences with offhanded comments or passive aggression and which are in red, underlined. At one point she also reviews her questionable choice to venture into the anonymous q&a box on Instagram and talks through some other personal musings about people that make a personality type out of being "brutally honest" and what that's really doing for anyone's life. Preaching To The Fryer

This week, Kate discusses Evangelical influencers, from more extreme transitions, e.g. a fashion influencer who now offers deliverance from abortion demons (?), to the reality-star-to-preacher-pipeline of young women of faith that are talented public speakers like Duck Dynasty's Sadie Robertson and The Bachelor's Madi Prewett that now use their platforms as ministries. Kate also plays clips from other mid-sized influencers, masochistically watches a couple videos from Girl Defined, and talks a bit about her experience analyzing the persuasive tactics of Evangelical preachers. Specifically, how she draws parallels to motivational speakers and MLMs that all talk in the same way, who do things like verbally paint big metaphors from tiny anecdotes, engineer emotional buildups that culminate with guilt and a scream-crying call to action, and then manufacture feelings of hopefulness after purposefully tearing you down. All in the context of wanting people to be mindful of the people that influence an incredibly influential voting bloc that has taken away our bodily autonomy, White Evangelical Christians. Enjoy! Pinnie For Your Thoughts

This week, Kate takes on the topic of P.E. class and snorkels through the obscure political origins of the Presidential Physical Fitness exam, the trauma of locker rooms, public weigh-ins, wearing of never-washed mesh 'pinnies,' and the annual dangling of herself and her dignity from a pull-up bar, among other memorable elements of 90s/00s gym class culture that would likely not hold up today. She also talks about her tall girl complex and body image issues and wonders how metrics of athletic prowess influenced her sense of physical identity, then muses about how not being 'talented and gifted' likely had similar scholastic implications. Mostly she does things like complain about how traumatizing running the mile was for a good 10 minutes, but not before examining the weirdness of loose gym uniform shorts and the frequency of relying on a peer to hold your feet downwind. Part personal anecdote, part historical research, part crowdsourced, this is a lighthearted nostalgic ep that hopefully allows you to escape these trying times over the long weekend. Enjoy! Mary Had a Little Scam

This week, Kate discusses our obsession with scams and scam documentaries, and does a spin-off of the popular Tiktok prompt of "what's something that is a scam but we've normalized it so much we no longer realize it's a scam?" from her personal list of grievances, e.g. The American Dream, bridesmaid dresses, student loans, only married couples receiving benefits, among other things, and also goes through crowd-sourced submissions of things people think have big scam energy. She also details her disdain for True Crime as entertainment and explores why she prefers this category. However, she begins by discussing the Supreme Court overturning the landmark case of Roe v. Wade announced Friday, while she was away from equipment and had already recorded this week's episode (so forgive her, this section was done very last minute), but she uses the first half-hour to address perhaps the biggest scam of all: that people believe restricting access to abortion care is pro-life when it is unequivocally anti-women and stands to put countless lives at risk by forgoing human rights and medical best practice in favor the intervention of dangerous political and religious ideologies. This week, Kate meanders through the art of the K-12 field trip, sharing her own nostalgia along with crowdsourced funny, poignant, and shocking tales from listeners about their memorable field trips. From obscure locations to buddy system politics, museum gift shop culture, coach buses versus school buses, chaperone assignments, seeing your crush in the wild in street clothes, hookups mid-transit, to processing confusing feelings about historical war reenactments, this episode has something for everyone!
