The Pirates by Morgan Robertson ~ Full Audiobook [adventure]
The Pirates by Morgan Robertson audiobook. Genre: adventureWhen Ensign William Denman stays aboard a brand-new U.S. Navy destroyer for one quiet night, he expects nothing more dangerous than paperwork and a watchman's round. Instead, a dozen escaped prisoners slip through the fog, silence the sentries, and steal the fastest ship afloat, a turbine-driven grayhound fitted with torpedoes, searchlights, and a crackling new wireless set. Their leader, the hard-handed Herbert Jenkins, offers Denman a stark choice: parole and cooperation, or confinement in irons. Denman gives his word not to interfere, but honor does not make him safe. As the stolen destroyer surges into the Atlantic and warships begin to close in, Denman discovers an even more personal threat among the fugitives: John Forsythe, his boyhood rival, carrying an old grievance that time and uniforms have not erased. Trapped on a vessel that can outrun almost anything but cannot outrun consequences, Denman must weigh duty against survival, read the shifting loyalties of desperate men, and decide how far a naval officer can bend before he breaks. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 01(00:13:27) Chapter 02(00:25:21) Chapter 03(00:36:38) Chapter 04(00:46:51) Chapter 05(00:57:38) Chapter 06(01:09:51) Chapter 07(01:24:21) Chapter 08(01:34:24) Chapter 09(01:51:01) Chapter 10(02:03:13) Chapter 11(02:18:37) Chapter 12(02:33:04) Chapter 13(02:44:13) Chapter 14(02:56:07) Chapter 15(03:05:35) Chapter 16(03:15:09) Chapter 17(03:28:31) Chapter 18(03:41:35) Chapter 19(03:48:40) Chapter 20(04:04:20) Chapter 21(04:16:30) Chapter 22(04:26:41) Chapter 23(04:38:38) Chapter 24(04:49:48) Chapter 25(05:01:18) Chapter 26 Learn more about your ad choices. Don Quixote Vol. 2 by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra ~ Full Audiobook [adventure]
Don Quixote Vol. 2 by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra audiobook. Genre: adventureDon Quixote is an early novel written by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Cervantes created a fictional origin for the story in the character of the Morisco historian, Cide Hamete Benengeli, whom he claims to have hired to translate the story from an Arabic manuscript he found in Toledo's bedraggled old Jewish quarter. The protagonist, Alonso Quixano, is a minor landowner who has read so many stories of chivalry that he descends into fantasy and becomes convinced he is a knight errant. Together with his companion Sancho Panza, the self-styled Don Quixote de la Mancha sets out in search of adventures. His 'lady' is Dulcinea del Toboso, an imaginary object of his courtly love crafted from a neighbouring farmgirl by the illusion-struck 'knight' (her real name is Aldonza Lorenzo, and she is totally unaware of his feelings for her. In addition, she never actually appears in the novel).Published in two volumes a decade apart, Don Quixote is the most influential work of literature to emerge from the Spanish Golden Age and perhaps the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature, it regularly appears at or near the top of lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 00(00:11:35) Chapter 01(00:36:35) Chapter 02(00:47:16) Chapter 03(01:04:10) Chapter 04(01:15:31) Chapter 05(01:29:31) Chapter 06(01:42:10) Chapter 07(01:57:41) Chapter 08(02:14:11) Chapter 09(02:22:46) Chapter 10(02:42:20) Chapter 11(02:56:14) Chapter 12(03:10:33) Chapter 13(03:23:22) Chapter 14(03:47:39) Chapter 15(03:52:47) Chapter 16(04:13:55) Chapter 17(04:36:35) Chapter 18(04:54:50) Chapter 19(05:11:04) Chapter 20(05:29:46) Chapter 21(05:44:11) Chapter 22(06:01:18) Chapter 23(06:23:49) Chapter 24(06:37:24) Chapter 25(06:57:11) Chapter 26(07:14:57) Chapter 27(07:30:00) Chapter 28(07:41:23) Chapter 29(07:55:06) Chapter 30(08:06:00) Chapter 31(08:23:50) Chapter 32(08:54:38) Chapter 33(09:10:12) Chapter 34(09:26:33) Chapter 35(09:42:07) Chapter 36(09:55:03) Chapter 37(09:59:50) Chapter 38(10:14:34) Chapter 39(10:21:13) Chapter 40(10:33:33) Chapter 41(10:55:37) Chapter 42(11:07:27) Chapter 43(11:20:51) Chapter 44(11:41:14) Chapter 45(11:56:16) Chapter 46(12:05:25) Chapter 47(12:23:41) Chapter 48(12:42:30) Chapter 49(13:06:52) Chapter 50(13:25:55) Chapter 51(13:45:49) Chapter 52(14:02:26) Chapter 53(14:16:05) Chapter 54(14:33:54) Chapter 55(14:50:20) Chapter 56(15:02:33) Chapter 57(15:10:51) Chapter 58(15:36:39) Chapter 59(15:55:17) Chapter 60(16:24:08) Chapter 61(16:30:59) Chapter 62(16:57:42) Chapter 63(17:19:18) Chapter 64(17:29:28) Chapter 65(17:41:59) Chapter 66(17:53:20) Chapter 67(18:04:36) Chapter 68(18:16:00) Chapter 69(18:28:04) Chapter 70(18:44:27) Chapter 71(18:57:26) Chapter 72(19:08:11) Chapter 73(19:18:54) Chapter 74 Learn more about your ad choices. The Eight Strokes of the Clock by Maurice Leblanc ~ Full Audiobook [mystery]
The Eight Strokes of the Clock by Maurice Leblanc audiobook. Genre: mysteryIn The Eight Strokes of the Clock, Maurice Leblanc sends Arsene Lupin, France's legendary gentleman-thief, into a different kind of game: not a heist, but a sequence of puzzles where time itself seems to set the rules. When the daring and newly widowed Countess of Cagliostro crosses paths with Lupin, she is drawn into an unusual arrangement - eight promised adventures, each marked by a stroke of a clock and each leading toward a larger, hidden design. From country houses and lonely roads to seaside towns and shadowed estates, the pair follow cryptic clues, coded messages, and seemingly impossible coincidences. Lupin, charming and unreadable as ever, must balance gallantry with suspicion, because every mystery offers two dangers: the trap laid by an enemy and the trap laid by desire. As the cases unfold, the countess discovers that Lupin's greatest talent is not merely stealing valuables, but stealing certainty - turning suspects into allies, victims into accomplices, and straightforward crimes into intricate riddles. Fast, elegant, and suspenseful, this collection blends romance, wit, and classic detective intrigue into a race against the next chime. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 01(00:51:49) Chapter 02(01:40:19) Chapter 03(02:25:10) Chapter 04(03:12:43) Chapter 05(04:01:16) Chapter 06(04:47:08) Chapter 07(05:38:37) Chapter 08 Learn more about your ad choices. Is Shakespeare Dead by Mark Twain ~ Full Audiobook [history]
Is Shakespeare Dead by Mark Twain audiobook. Genre: historyA short, semi-autobiographical work by American humorist Mark Twain. It explores the controversy over the authorship of the Shakespearean literary canon via satire, anecdote, and extensive quotation of contemporary authors on the subject. In the book, Twain expounds the view that Shakespeare of Stratford was not the author of the canon, and lends tentative support to the Baconian theory. The book opens with a scene from his early adulthood, where he was trained to be a steamboat pilot by an elder who often argued with him over the controversy. Twain's arguments include the following points: That little was known about Shakespeare's life, and the bulk of his biographies were based on conjecture. That a number of eminent British barristers and judges found Shakespeare's plays permeated with precise legal thought, and that the author could only have been a veteran legal professional. That in contrast, Shakespeare of Stratford had never held a legal position or office, and had only been in court over petty lawsuits late in life. That small towns lionize and celebrate their famous authors for generations, but this had not happened in Shakespeare's case. He described his own fame in Hannibal as a case in point. Twain draws parallels and analogies from the pretensions of modern religious figures and commentators on the nature of Satan. He compares the believers in Shakespeare to adherents of Arthur Orton and Mary Baker Eddy. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 01(00:22:30) Chapter 02(00:41:39) Chapter 03(01:02:14) Chapter 04(01:28:26) Chapter 05(02:01:59) Chapter 06(02:29:58) Chapter 07(02:44:12) Chapter 08 Learn more about your ad choices. The Thing in the Woods by Margery Williams ~ Full Audiobook [fantasy]
The Thing in the Woods by Margery Williams audiobook. Genre: fantasyDr. Haverill is asked to fill in as local physician for the skittish Dr. Lennox in a small Pennsylvania town. The locals seem to be a superstitious bunch, prone to fearing traveling in the woods at night and with good reason. It seems a series of vicious attacks have occurred by what appears to be some kind of large animal. As the bodies begin to pile up, Dr. Haverill starts to question whether the responsible party could be something beyond humanity.Writer Margery Williams Bianco (writing here under the pseudonym Harper Williams) is perhaps better known for writing the children's classic 'The Velveteen Rabbit', but this dark slice of mystery horror fiction was found to be admired by none other than H. P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft scholars have noted in particular a distinct influence that this book had on his famous story 'The Dunwich Horror'.Also please note that this book is of its time and features racially insensitive language in the early chapters. Those who are concerned with such language should be advised. Baseball Joe in the Big League by Lester Chadwick ~ Full Audiobook [adventure]
Baseball Joe in the Big League by Lester Chadwick audiobook. Genre: adventure'Baseball Joe' Matson's great ambition is to become a professional baseball pitcher. The Baseball Joe series follows his career as he seeks to attain his goal. In this fifth volume, Joe is drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the major leagues. A successful season of pitching is marred by mishaps beginning with a request for a loan by a has-been ball player and ending with the kidnapping of our hero.Lester Chadwick is one of dozens of house pseudonyms created by the Stratemeyer Syndicate in the early to mid 1900's, to 'author' children's series. Contract writers (whose identities were to remain unknown under tight secrecy) were hired to write the books in the series under the various names, usually multiple writers contributing volumes to a particular series. Howard R. Garis (1873-1962) is thought to have ghost-written most, if not all (sources vary), of the 14-volume Baseball Joe series. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 01(00:13:24) Chapter 02(00:23:07) Chapter 03(00:36:15) Chapter 04(00:46:55) Chapter 05(00:57:27) Chapter 06(01:07:38) Chapter 07(01:16:24) Chapter 08(01:28:22) Chapter 09(01:36:42) Chapter 10(01:49:07) Chapter 11(02:01:24) Chapter 12(02:08:48) Chapter 13(02:19:39) Chapter 14(02:31:50) Chapter 15(02:40:22) Chapter 16(02:53:16) Chapter 17(03:02:59) Chapter 18(03:09:13) Chapter 19(03:20:13) Chapter 20(03:36:08) Chapter 21(03:45:32) Chapter 22(03:56:17) Chapter 23(04:08:31) Chapter 24(04:17:20) Chapter 25(04:28:27) Chapter 26(04:35:41) Chapter 27(04:43:42) Chapter 28(04:50:14) Chapter 29(04:57:50) Chapter 30 Learn more about your ad choices. What Shall We Do by Leo Tolstoy ~ Full Audiobook [philosophy]
What Shall We Do by Leo Tolstoy audiobook. Genre: philosophyA vivid description of wealth and poverty in Russia in Tolstoy's day, an inquiry into the root causes of economic inequality, and a vision of a more just way of living.Tolstoy recounts his own disturbing encounters with extreme poverty in Moscow, his initial idea of making the problem disappear by generous financial contributions, and his subsequent realization that the problem of poverty was much more intractable than he had imagined. He concludes that poverty is fundamentally linked with the luxurious lifestyle to which he and his class were accustomed, and that both are detrimental both to the rich and to the poor. He goes on to investigate the roots of power imbalances, both in the state and in markets, and to make suggestions for a fundamental social and economic reform in the interest of justice and well-being. Both his social critique and his proposed reforms are grounded in a deeply held and somewhat unorthodox religious faith, as well as in a vigorously applied but somewhat unconventional view of science.Unfortunately he also expresses some views on the role and duties of women and the use of birth control which some readers may find offensive. This material is mostly contained in Chapter 40, the last chapter.
