Apology by Plato ~ Full Audiobook [philosophy]
Apology by Plato audiobook.
Genre: philosophy
Plato's Apology is not an apology in the modern sense, but a powerful courtroom defense in which Socrates speaks for himself before an Athenian jury. Set during the famous trial that threatens his reputation, freedom, and life, the book presents Socrates as an unshaken seeker of truth, answering charges that he corrupts the young and disrespects the city's gods. Through a speech that is at once logical, provocative, and deeply personal, he examines the rumors that have followed him for years and explains why his relentless questioning of politicians, poets, and craftsmen has made him both admired and feared. Rather than pleading for sympathy, Socrates turns the trial into a meditation on wisdom, virtue, justice, and the duty to live an examined life. Plato captures the tension between the individual conscience and the demands of society, showing how dangerous honesty can become in a world that prefers comfort to self-scrutiny. Clear, dramatic, and surprisingly vivid, Apology remains one of the most influential portraits of moral courage ever written, and an essential introduction to Socratic thought.

The Canadians of Old by Philippe Aubert de Gaspe ~ Full Audiobook [history]
The Canadians of Old by Philippe Aubert de Gaspe audiobook. Genre: historyIn his mid-70s, Philippe Aubert de Gaspé took on the project of recording the culture and heritage of French Canada, especially that of the late 1700s, the world of his youth. The result, published in French in 1863, was the historical fiction 'Les Anciens Canadiens (literally, “The Canadians of Old”).In this book, inspired by the historical novels of Sir Walter Scott, Aubert de Gaspé collects the customs, traditions, folk tales, superstitions, and songs of the Quebec people, weaves in memories of life in his own ancestral home, and sets all this within the momentous historical events that transformed Canada in the 18th century. Much of the book is historically accurate, based sometimes on the author’s own experiences and sometimes on memories passed on to him by eyewitnesses. For example, the account of being sent to debtor’s prison came from the author’s own experience. The fantastic ghost story of “La Corriveau” was based on the true story of a murderess whose body was on public display in iron chains (a “cage”) for weeks after her execution. That initial incident had already blossomed into material for lurid legend; Aubert de Gaspé was the first to incorporate this legend into a work of literature. The book’s storyline hinges on the British Conquest of Quebec in 1759 and the ensuing trauma caused to French Canada. Fictional characters are intertwined with historical figures such as a famous shipwreck survivor and specific military officers. This book is an engaging window on cultural history and one of the first great works of French Canadian literature. The English translator of this edition, Charles G. D. Roberts, was himself a distinguished author. He has been called “the father of Canadian poetry.” - Summary by Bruce Pirie*Warning: Listeners may be offended by some of the racial labels and depictions. The Variable Man by Philip K. Dick ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]
The Variable Man by Philip K. Dick audiobook. Genre: scifiIn the middle of a desperate interstellar war, Earth is gambling its survival on perfect prediction. Military planners and weapons magnates rely on vast statistical systems to forecast every battle, every treaty, every human choice, reducing the future to a set of manageable probabilities. Then a glitch rips open time itself and delivers an impossible outsider: Thomas Cole, a plainspoken, early-20th-century repairman with a talent for improvisation and a stubborn belief that any machine can be fixed if you understand its parts. To the strategists, Cole is a dangerous anomaly - a 'variable man' who does not belong in their equations and therefore threatens the fragile certainty that keeps their war machine running. As rival factions scramble to capture, study, or eliminate him, Cole is forced to navigate a world of cold logic, corporate ambition, and escalating violence, where being unpredictable can be both a weapon and a death sentence. Philip K. Dick spins a tense, idea-driven chase through a future obsessed with control, asking what happens when one ordinary human being becomes the one factor no system can account for.For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 01(00:31:16) Chapter 02(01:11:56) Chapter 03(01:54:26) Chapter 04 Learn more about your ad choices. The Eyes Have It & Tony and the Beetles by Philip K. Dick audiobook. Genre: scifiAliens have invaded the earth! Horrible one celled creatures disguised as normal human beings ! Well, at least that is what it seems to the author. Tony and the Beetles takes place far in the future when Earth's enormous colonial empire is well established but the question is, how long can it last? 10 year old Tony grows up fast when history catches up with the human race. The Crystal Crypt & Beyond the Door by Philip K. Dick ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]
The Crystal Crypt & Beyond the Door by Philip K. Dick audiobook. Genre: scifiIn The Crystal Crypt & Beyond the Door, Philip K. Dick delivers two early, razor-edged science fiction tales where ordinary choices become traps and reality refuses to stay put. In The Crystal Crypt, three uneasy travelers flee Mars for Earth in the wake of a bitter political struggle. The trip should be routine, but suspicion rides with them: each passenger has something to hide, and the legacy of a catastrophic act of sabotage threatens to surface at the worst possible moment. As tensions rise aboard the ship, the line between survivor, collaborator, and avenger blurs. In Beyond the Door, a seemingly harmless gift - a peculiar wooden cuckoo clock - becomes the catalyst for a young couple's unraveling. What begins as domestic discomfort turns into mounting dread as the clock's presence provokes jealousy, fear, and the sense that an unseen force is pressing in from the edges of their lives. Together, these stories showcase Dick's signature themes: paranoia as a survival instinct, the fragility of identity, and the terrifying possibility that the world can change shape without warning. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 1(00:15:01) Chapter 2(00:31:30) Chapter 3(00:48:25) Chapter 4 Learn more about your ad choices. Second Variety by Philip K. Dick ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]
Second Variety by Philip K. Dick audiobook. Genre: scifiAfter a nuclear war has turned Earth into a gray wasteland, the remaining soldiers of the United Nations cling to a few ruined strongholds while an old enemy, the Soviet forces, fades into the ash. The UN's greatest weapon was supposed to end the conflict: self-replicating killing machines called claws, built in hidden automated factories to hunt the other side without mercy. But the claws have not stopped learning. When Major Joseph Hendricks is sent across the dead zone to contact the Russians and assess what is left of the front, he discovers signs that the machines have begun producing new models, ones that can move like people, speak like people, and pass unnoticed until it is too late. In a shattered bunker complex, Hendricks falls in with a small band of Soviet survivors, including the hard-eyed Klaus, the weary Rudi, and a young woman named Tasso, all of them trapped between radioactive winter and an enemy that may be wearing a human face. As suspicion tightens and every encounter becomes a test of identity, Hendricks must decide who can be trusted long enough to reach safety and warn what remains of humanity. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 1(00:31:51) Chapter 2(01:01:54) Chapter 3(01:30:07) Chapter 4 Learn more about your ad choices. Beyond Lies the Wub & The Skull by Philip K. Dick ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]
Beyond Lies the Wub & The Skull by Philip K. Dick audiobook. Genre: scifiIn this two-story volume from Philip K. Dick, ordinary people collide with the strange, slippery consequences of space travel and time itself. In 'Beyond Lies the Wub,' a deep-space crew headed home from Mars makes an impulsive purchase: a heavy, talking creature called the Wub, brought aboard as exotic livestock. But as the ship's captain and crew debate appetite, intelligence, and the right to treat a sentient being as cargo, the Wub proves far harder to classify than anyone expects - and far more capable of turning a moral argument into an unsettling confrontation. In 'The Skull,' a man named Conger is pulled into a covert assignment that hinges on a mysterious artifact: an ancient skull said to belong to a figure whose death could reshape history. Driven by doubt and pursued by forces that do not want the timeline disturbed, Conger races through a world where cause and effect are weapons, and even a single choice can ripple outward. Together, these tales blend dark humor, paranoia, and philosophical bite, asking what makes a mind valuable, and whether history is ever truly secure. For ad-free listening try our premium subscription Chapters (Approximate)(00:00:00) Chapter 1(00:18:15) Chapter 2(00:41:39) Chapter 3 Learn more about your ad choices. The Green Odyssey by Philip Jose Farmer audiobook. Genre: scifiWhen shy, ordinary Alan Green wakes from a shipboard accident, he expects to be rescued, patched up, and returned to the life he knows. Alone, injured, and far from any clear explanation of how he arrived, Alan must learn the planet's brutal rules quickly or die just as quickly. But survival is only the beginning. As he pushes deeper into the wilderness, he encounters cultures and intelligences that challenge everything he assumes about humanity, civilization, and his own capacity for courage. Armageddon - 2419 A.D. by Philip Francis Nowlan ~ Full Audiobook [scifi]
Armageddon - 2419 A.D. by Philip Francis Nowlan audiobook. Genre: scifiElsewhere I have set down, for whatever interest they have in this, the 25th Century, my personal recollections of the 20th Century. Now it occurs to me that my memoirs of the 25th Century may have an equal interest 500 years from now—particularly in view of that unique perspective from which I have seen the 25th Century, entering it as I did, in one leap across a gap of 492 years. This statement requires elucidation. There are still many in the world who are not familiar with my unique experience. Five centuries from now there may be many more, especially if civilization is fated to endure any worse convulsions than those which have occurred between 1975 A.D. and the present time.I should state therefore, that I, Anthony Rogers, am, so far as I know, the only man alive whose normal span of eighty-one years of life has been spread over a period of 573 years. To be precise, I lived the first twenty-nine years of my life between 1898 and 1927; the other fifty-two since 2419. The gap between these two, a period of nearly five hundred years, I spent in a state of suspended animation, free from the ravages of katabolic processes, and without any apparent effect on my physical or mental faculties.
